Spikes is having a monster year. He is bursting through the line, clobbering guys, causing fumbles, disrupting plays, and in general just causing havoc. And he is not bad in coverage. He has become the enforcer in the middle that the Patriots have not had in years yet the douches in the press have hardly noticed; all they want to do is complain about the DBs. I don't get it....wait yes I do..baseball season is over so they need something else to complain about....

pretty sure after every game this year there has been a spikes thread about a big hit or a FF....the love it all over patsfans.com and for good reason

I wouldn't go so far as to say he's 'not bad in coverage', but I agree that he has been playing very well this year.

Unfortunately the negatives with the team's pass defense garner much more attention than the positives of his, or any other player's performance - most likely due to the Pats having lost three games.

He's had some monster hits, including the one that pretty much sent Greene out for the Jets game and he has the potential to cause a fumble on nearly every running play. With that said, he couldn't make a catch if a pass ended up inside his jockstrap. But he's having a really good year.

I really like the nastiness he brings to the defense. It's been a little while since the Pats had a real enforcer in the middle.

He snagged a pretty nice one during his rookie season.

His pick of Flacco was so clutch. My god is he slow though. It showed on that particular play when he returned it, and you see it when someone busts lose and he has to give chase. Love his flair though, his run blitzing is a real issue for the other team's line.

And he had one in the AFCCG last year. What have you done for me lately, I guess.
Yeah, you're right. I wasn't thinking of that one when I posted. I watched my DVR replay tonight of Sunday's game and the tipped one he dropped on the Jets opening drive would have been huge.

That was a VERY frustrating drop. For a LB, though, Spikes' hands seem no worse than average so far.

Spikes has gotten all kinds of love from various media outlets and members of this board. I don't know where the OP is getting the perceived slight or lack of love for Spikes.

I am afraid of Spikes.

Yeah it would have been nice but he has proven to have good hands in the past.

Spikes is good in coverage where he can drop into a zone. He is one of our pass defenders who usually looks for the ball and to disrupt it in flight.

One of my gripes with Mayo recently is he also is using that trail technique when covering the middle of the field.

i would really like to see that Urlacher type drop deep but eyes on the QB and WR/RB/TE in front of them. this would really help sure up the intermediate/deep middle of the field a bit more

Spikes isn't known for his pass coverage though. Mayo is our primary pass covering LB. Spikes is our best LB when it comes to pass rush and blowing up runs. I'm glad he's finally showing everyone how well he can play, especially after an injury inflicted rookie season. He is sort of like a slower but bigger Willie McGinest.

Willie mcginest measurables were 6-5 270, spikes is 6-2 255.

Spike really does pack a violent and amazing punch.....is great to see hime playing at such a high level, let's hope he can keep this up.

Opposing players have to fear the middle of the field knowing he is there.

Will this do??

Like the guys on PFW (especially Andy) have been wanting for a while, I want guys who are great at one thing.

Sure you want the player who is great at everything, but they're almost non-existent. Give me the guy who is great at one thing over the guy who is mediocre at everything.

He's an All-Pro Tweeter with a minor in video

I have much love for Spikes. The defense clearly has a different attitude and demeanor about them when he's out there.

And here's a question: is he next in line for a contract extension? Has he shown enough so far to warrant it or does his injury history hamper (potential) talks?
