Adam Caplan tweeted that Shiancoe returened to practice today. I read it on bleacher report tweet section.
Anyway, just wondering what some of you think this will mean for the offense in the near future? Thoughts?

Veteran tight end Visanthe Shiancoe, who on Sept. 5 was placed on injured reserve with the designation to return, was back at practice for the Patriots on Tuesday, the team confirmed.

Under the designation, Shiancoe was eligible to return to practice after Week 6 and is eligible to begin playing in games after Week 8. If the team does not activate Shiancoe to the 53-man roster within 21 days, he must remain on injured reserve for the balance of the season.

The nature of Shiancoe's injury is unknown, but the fact that he returned to the practice field suggests he is inching closer to becoming healthy. He was spotted walking out to the team's Tuesday walk-through.

Good. We were in 4 TE sets on Sunday. Now that we have Shiancoe, we can finally unleash the revolutionizing 5 TE set!

Thank you very much for that. Curious to see what impact this has if and when he is 100%

Perhaps he can do a better job than Fells who has been fairly insignificant in the passing game.

I didn't get a chance to look at the offensive snap totals per positioning.

Do you have any idea how many times they lined up in a 4 TE set?

Better yet, any idea how many times they threw/ran in those plays?

Unless Fells has another injury then I would think the Michael Hoomanawanui era will end once Shiancoe is ready to play.

I agree that Fells has been a disappointment of sorts, then again there are only so many balls to go around too.

I wonder if it'd be any different had he made a couple of those catches in the beginning and possibly gained the trust of TB/JMcD?

Sorry, not a big X's and O's kinda guy. We threw out of that set though, I believe. I think it was on the third down near the end of the fourth where Hern was covered by Wilson and he got PI. Nantz mentioned it and that's how I knew.

I know that Fells caught a fair amount of balls for Denver....but I believe BB brought him in here more as a blocking TE.....Shiancoe had several good seasons as an offensive weapon (he was great on my fantasy team one year I know that!) but not sure what BB has in store for him here and at what capacity he is physically at this point......

I thank you much, kind sir.

I did not think that there were any 4 TE groupings myself, as that sounded very foreign to what I saw during the game, but when the other poster mentioned the fact that we used 4 TE sets, I figured I'd ask + like to see it for myself.

Sometimes it's very difficult to see all of what's going on in the TV broadcasts, and as we all know the broadcasters can often be incorrect.

When you mentioned the 4 TE sets I was surprised, due to the fact that they didn't seem to have much success running the ball (not saying they were horrible running, but it wasn't exactly tremendously successful either).

I would love to see a handful of plays where 4 TE's are used, but I don't know if we'll ever get to see that happen. If it does, it will certainly be rare.

I wasn't sure myself so it's nice that Mike Reiss publishes that info every week.

If you or anyone else is interested the two links below will lead to each week's offensive snaps, and each week's positional groupings.

Perhaps we'll see 4 TEs being used at different positions... AHern was lined up at WR for quite a few snaps and we all know Gronk can split out as well. I don't think 4 TE sets will be very common, but 4 TEs on the field playing different positions may be something we see very soon.

I would certainly like to see that happen, as it would give us potential to not only have tremendous success running of course, but they could also try to throw the other team off by hitting on a couple/few passes in that grouping first.

Of course, before that happens we need 4 starting caliber HEALTHY TEs. That may take a while, with both Gronk and AHern hobbled and Shiancoe coming off of IR... And Fells with constant injury problems... Hoomanawanui is a common name on the injury report as well...

Re: Shiancoe returns to practice

Shianco and Fells are here because If Gronk or Hernandez get hurt we have 2 capable back ups at all times in case of injuries. One hybrid offensive guy that can be used all over the formation like Hernandez and one traditional blocking TE like Gronk. Schianco is here to back up Herandez, while Fells primary duty will be to back up Gronk, even though he has some Hernandez-like offensive skills.

I think next year Schainco will be gone and Fells will back up Herandez and Ballard will be ready to back up Gronk. The Pats are totally committed now to an offense that revolves around the unique talents of the Gronk and Hernandez.

Given how injuries occur (as we saw last super bowl) we can't continue that commitment without competent back ups. Not only that having the ability to run out 4 TE's with offensive capabilities can give the Pats some very interesting match ups, and speed offense capabilities.

While the rest of league is now catching up to the benefits of having a 2 TE offense, the Pats are staying one step ahead by having the quality depth that will allow them to continue to use those TE mismatches even in the face of the inevitable injuries that crop up every NFL season.

Thus far with the injuries to Hernandez, Fells and Schianco, plus the knicks that have slowed down Gronk, we haven't yet seen the full benefits of the TE offense yet. The best is yet to come

Eagles signed former Patriots C Matt Tennant. Expect them to troll for another interior OL. I think the Patriots wanted Tennant back.

Shiancoe at practice makes me excited. :rocker:
