Here we go, Jet fans making excuses about the time clock.

Does the clock operator at Gillette Stadium deserve credit for the New England Patriots' late comeback against the New York Jets on Sunday night?

That's what some Gang Green conspiracy theorists seem to believe when it comes to Devin McCourty's late fumble that set up New York's go-ahead score.

The NFL reviewed the play and determined there was no clock-operator error, a league spokesman said Monday, according to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com.

-Regarding the beginning of the kickoff return, you're talking about maybe a one second delay- pretty standard. Beyond that I hardly think the clock operator had the clairvoyance to know what was going to happen and that it would ultimately benefit the Pats.

-It seems like the clock operator was off by a few seconds and it should have run down the the 2-minute warning. However, the clock operator should be on the field, because had the whistle been blown when the Jets player got possession and was down by contact, there actually was 2:01.

-Pats sill would have gotten the ball back with the same amount of time but one less timeout. This isn't like the Jets could have run the clock down to 0:40 and kicked a field goal. Patriots gameplan would have changed, as they would have gone for more sideline plays to get out of bounds. The way it played out, the Jets gave them inside routes, seemlingly to protect the sidelines.

-Overall, a very, very weak excuse from the Jets. The Pats lost games this year on some terrible calls that were blatant. I would take a one second clock error over some horrendous, game-changing officiating multiple times during a given game.

Is there are a sorer bunch of losers than Jets fans? You'd think that, through 40 uninterrupted years of losing, they would learn to do it with a bit of dignity.

They're complaining more about this than we complained about the Ravens loss, which actually could be blamed on officiating (and was by many neutral observers).

Just hearing this stuff today makes the win that much sweeter.

Considering the circumstances (score and possession at the time of the kickoff), if the clock operator was attempting to help the Patriots then he would have done the opposite and had more time come off the clock, not less.




By the way the NFL Network is run almost exclusively by former espn executives, and it shows in their approach that creating controversy sells; that same business decision seems to be fueling NFL.com as well.

But here's the problem with their theory (who is this guy by the way, who says, "Hey' there's a controversy here, even though there isn't, as the league already said there was no clock error.") - Brady had to wait at least five seconds at the end of the drive, to call the Pats' last time out. They weren't out of time at any point during that drive. If the Pats got down to the 30 yd. line with one second left and then quickly called time out their theory might have legs, but that is not what happened. As a matter of fact, I recall there was about 1:40 on the clock when we got the ball back, way past the 2 minute warning.

Secondly, just wanted to point out IF the operator was trying to help the Pats (which I honestly don't think was the case) how would taking more time off the clock benefit NE in a tie game with around 2 minutes left?

The ideal situation for the Pats would be to get the ball with 2:01 on the clock, so regardless the result of your first offensive play, the clock would stop as they would have to drive the length of the field to get in position to win with a FG or TD.

Just so happens Jets got the ball on the fumble ALREADY in FG position, so running time off was as important as anything on that series. If McCourty doesn't fumble, then having that one play before the 2 minute warning would of been beneficial as they had to get into FG range in a TIE GAME.

In the end, the Jets can't blame the loss on this regardless. They had their chances and didn't come through. I don't believe the clock operator was trying to give the Pats a little help, and if anything was a mistake. I know the NFL said there was no mistake made, but it is a stretch to say it only took 4 seconds for McCourty to run a good 10 yards atleast, get hit and stripped, and Jets recover even with the usual late start of the clock at times.

Yeah in my opinion, bad breaks, bad calls, etc wont beat you......what beats you is not taking advantage of the opportunities you had through out the game.

I was as mad and disappointed as any Jets fan after the game, but also can credit the opponent for why things didn't go our way and why the Jets lost.......just like cant totally beat down on your team for its struggles at times because the other guys had something to do with it as well.

The Pats and Jets both played a tough, hard fought game. Both made plays, both made mistakes, and both had a shot to win. The Pats were the team that took advantage of their opportunities more often then the Jets, which is why they won the game.

As a Jets fan, despite being disappointed they lost, will not discredit the Pats for it. Just like when the Jets win, I don't want them discredited for the game they played.
