Huge offseason ahead...

Character counts with Bill Belichick. There is no way the Patriots will select a gun carrying, leg stomping, gang banger. Michael Griffin is the long term solution at free safety.
Check my thread on the Draft Board, there's serious question about whether Merriweather is the bad guy some make him out to be.

How is it that every year is labeled at the biggest off season in recent years? In my opinion, we had far more holes to deal with last year than this one.
This is the biggest offseason in recent years because (1) there are few high quality free agents, (2) most teams are well under the cap and will resign their own quality players, (3) we don't have many upper echelon players to resign, and (4) we have no obvious openings where a rookie can step in and contribute, and the back end of the roster has gotten a lot younger.

Big, big offseason coming up!

Hawkin is 29; Gay has played Safety as well as CB. Mitchell is primarily a ST safety but he does have some starting expereince in regular defense as well. and as you say we can add Sanders and Geno. Most teams carry only four or five Safeties, so we were three past the usual definition of "depth" due to injury.

Scott,Tebuckey and Harrison provide depth. All are ex-starters and much better than having to play inexperienced players like an Andrews or Baker.
Hawkins is 30 years old, Chad Scott is 32 years old, Tebucky Jones is 32 years old. Mel Mitchell is a special teams player and James Sanders will be ahead of him on the depth chart next year at strong safety. There is no guarantee that Tebucky Jones or Mel Mitchell will be on the roster next year.

Randall Gay is a restricted free agent and it will be interesting whether the Patriots offer him a tender, considering his injury history the last two seasons.

Thank You...
Sorry man, I just think its going to be a quiet, quiet offseason coming up.

If you want to go big, follow the Redskins for a bit. This time of year is when they really start to play ball.

Do you deny the leg stomping incident by Meriweather in the Miami - Florida International brawl? Do you deny that he was suspended for one game by the university for his participation in the aforementioned brawl? Do you deny the shooting incident in which Meriweather concealed a weapon in his pants? Way too many red flags for the New England Patriots organization.

Yeah I know, but Im like most Pats Fans, I wish we waited another week before we talk off season..

Check the thread on the draft board. It's not clear that he's a bad guy. Maybe he is but it's not as clear cut as you're trying to make it out to be.

Oh Please! You are rationalizing his behavior due to your own personal biases. Fortunately, that's not how the New England Patriots front office works. It's time to take off those orange colored Hurricane glasses and look elsewhere for a potential free safety in the 2007 NFL draft.

No, I just asked the question. I don't want jerks on the team but I don't want to blindly cross guys off for mistakes if they're unlikely to be repeated.

Sounds like he made a solid impression at the Senior Bowl :

"plus Meriweather, who has seen his stok drop in part because of some non-football stuff, played with enthusiasm and appeared to emerge as a leader on the field."

Here is the bottom line:

The New England Patriots organization does not draft college football players with questionable character issues.

No and if their reports on him are bad then he won't be on the draft board. But the two incidents alone may not be enough, we'll see. There's a fine line between a thug and a guy making a few youthful indisgressions. Again, I don't want punks. But I don't want to cross guys off unless I'm sure that description fits and from other accounts of him, I'm not sure it does.

Don't you think that Pioli and Belichick learned their lesson dealing with the antics of Terry Glenn during the 2001 NFL season, none of which dealt with fire arms or on-the-field violence?

Antoine Womack, Cedric Cobbs, PK Sam, Christian Morton, Le Kevin Smith...

Everyone's different. Glenn's problems were doing what he was told and responding to authorities (namely the coaches). There's nothing to suggest Merriweather has those issues.

How many of those players made the police blotter?
Merriweather wasn't charged with anything in the gun situation. He legally owned it and used it for self defense. The melee, he should have shown better restraint but it's still a 22 year old getting caught up in a dumb moment.

Again, if this looks like it would continue I wouldn't draft him. But you have to be careful dumbing down your draft list based on an incident or two from a guy who may not be a bad guy.

LeKevin is a model citizen.

I don't think he appreciates this.
Coming out "they" said he was lazy and undisciplined. Those are character issues. The Pats still drafted him.

I do agree he, unlike the others I listed, has overcome those issues.

A shooting incident is a far more egregious act in the public eye than a four game drug suspension. A leg stomping incident shown on the ESPN highlights over and over and over again is a far more egregious act in the public eye than a four game drug suspension.

But then again, you would just sweep it under the rug. You certainly qualify as front office personnel material for the Cincinnati Bengals.
