Rex Ryan told Chandler Jones he wanted to draft him, but was overruled

If that's true, then Tannenbaum is an idiot.

Why would he make a promise or commitment he didn't have the authority to keep?

Well, maybe he did think he would have the authority. Maybe he thought Tannebaum was on board with drafting Jones. Maybe he was blowing smoke up Jones' arse.

ROFL and they took Coples 5 picks ahead of Jones too.

Don't forget Gholston over Mayo. Mayo may not be a stud, but he a very good player and is far better than Gholston ever was and addresses the biggest weakness of the Jets' defense.

Ha ha! I'm sorry, but there is absolutely no way Rex is overruled by Tannenbaum on this decision. Rex knows defense and who is good for his own defense. I could see Tannenbaum or someone else in the organization stepping in an overruling Rex in other circumstances. For example, I could see them forcing him to draft a skill player, like a WR, or even a QB, but there's no way an accountant overrules a coach on WHICH defensive end to go with.

Personally, I thought Rex's comment made sense that Coples is bigger. He is more of a traditional 3-4 defensive end. Chandler Jones is a classic 4-3 defensive end who relies more on speed and reach than power and clogging the holes.

I would say all-in-all, when you consider all five years, Mayo is a stud. Maybe he isn't Patrick Willis, but he is certainly a pro-bowl caliber NFL player who is consistently one of the best players on defense.

It's possible that Rex didn't think Coples would be there at 17, and so assumed Jones would be his highest rated player available.

BostonHerald.com - Blogs: The Blitz»» Chandler Jones, a near Jet? Yup, but they passed. Oops.

To this point, the Pats look like they got the better kid, with Jones leading all rookies with 5.0 sacks, while Coples has 1.5. Jones just looks like the better overall player, period.

Speaking with media today, the Pats rookie sure thought the Jets were going to take him.

”Yeah, they showed a lot of interest,” Jones said earlier today. Ryan also chatted him up about his UFC champion fighting brother Jon Bones Jones. Chandler even seemed to like Rex from their brief interaction. But it wasn’t to be.

”I went up there and sat down and we went over a few schemes. Basically what every team does with you,” Chandler Jones said. ”We talked about my brother a little bit but that was it.”

Now, he’s preparing for his first Pats-Jets border war.

”If you want to call this a big game, personally for me it’ll be a big game,” Jones said. ”That’s my UFC fighting mentality every week. Yeah. Against the Jets it’s a big game.”

Not that Mel Kiper truly gets it, either. . . .

I'm shocked Coples actually has a couple sacks this year, I haven't heard anything about him the whole year.

Way too early to call Coples a bust. In his first full game as a starter he had a pretty good game for himself. I don't think the ceiling is as high with Coples as it is with Jones as a pass rusher but i think he could become a solid player.

That being said..Coples seems like an immature punk and here is yet further proof.

Sounds very butthurt in here about the jones comparisons.

I hope Chandler goes off on the Jets this weekend after getting passed on by them.

I remember switching to SNY and hearing the Jets tire pumpers talk and hearing Ray Lucas say how great the Gholston pick was and how the Patriots reached with Mayo and how they probably could have moved back to the 20's and still got him.

I also recall Gary Myers (pretty sure) telling a story after Lucas' rant on how Gholston is who the Patriots wanted and that they couldn't get a deal worked out with the Chiefs to move ahead of the Jets so once the Jets took him they traded back to 10. But had they not forfeited the late 1st round pick because of the rules violation that the deal probably would have gotten done with the Chiefs.

Which is such complete bs. Bill wanted Mayo all along and once Mangina and Tannuenidiot drafted Gholston he knew he could pick up an extra draft pick by moving down.

If there was anyone Bill wanted as much or more in that draft it was probably Chris Long but that was never gonna happen.

Now thinking about that forfeited draft pick, I still believe had the Pats had it they would have Brandon Flowers right now. Because they used their 2nd pick on Wheatley. The corners that went before him were Flowers, Tracy Porter and Patrick Lee. Flowers went at 35. Pats pick would have been 31.

That's because he's got his head so far up his *** that he can't rush the passer.

Jones' sacks are a product of not our "simple scheme" but by simply being a beast. Getting to the QB (not to mention stripping the ball on no less than three occasions) while being held by every damn LT in the league is where his sacks came from.

Seems to me like Rexy is trying to blame someone else!

There's no commentary from Rex, it sounds like SMY is assuming the decision was over ruled.
