The front 7 are fine and stout, maybe Nink I dunno. The back end every player but maybe 32 and 27 need to be replaced next year.

This is simple. If Wilfork goes down we are more than likely screwed. No other player on are D is as indispensable.

Wilfork, Jones, Mayo and Spikes for me are big time, even Hightower is at the point where his void is big.

This is very true, but it isn't crazy to think Jones is a very close second. Amazing that you can even put him in the conversation after six career games. Spikes is stellar.

Without a doubt, Vince is the Brady on D. Lose him and production sharply declines.

Indispensable?

Vince Wilfork
Jerod Mayo
Chandler Jones
Dont'a Hightower

That's it. I'd add Spikes if his coverage skills were better.

Yah, the sky is the limit with Jones right now. Even if he stopped at this level he would be a worthy 1rst round pick. But there's not reason to think he'll stop improving any time soon. Troy Brown called Spikes the best run stopping LB in the game a few weeks ago. I don't think he's all that far off, especially after the last game.

The only difference for me is that BB has structured our whole D around Wilfork. He commands double-teams constantly, which frees up the pass rush and we are about 100% more likely to get gashed on a run when he isn't on the field.

as of right now I'd say the front 7 in general. questions about nink still but he has stepped up production lately (wasn't at de today for the most part)...but he's indispensable as a hybrid de/lb.

people I'd retain still are mccourty, wilson, dennard. that's it for the secondary.

I don't count cole or ebner as part of the defense...pure st players right now

Re: Which players on D are indespensible?

In today's NFL, I'm not convinced that Jones isn't already the most important player on the defense.

Belichick has proven that no player is even indispensable. Remember Richard Seymour? Mike Vrabel? Lawyer Milloy?

Wilfork, Jones, Spikes, Love

Wilfork, Jones, Mayo, Spikes, and Hightower. The rest are dispensable.

A brief survey of third tier QBs around the league reveals that Kyle Arrington and Tavon Wilson are indispensable to them being able to execute their offensive game plans.

On a serious note, your thread title has a typo.

Vince and Jones. If Mayo was capable of being a gamechanger, I'd say him, too. Right now, though, it doesn't look like he really is... no pressure on the QB or RB, best I can say is that he doesn't miss tackles (that I've seen, anyway).

Everyone else I'd replace in a second.

He missed a tackle on Wilson on that crazy run.

Just Vince and Jones then?:p

Chandler Jones, Vince Wilfork, Jerod Mayo, and Brandon Spikes are the only players that would nab starting spots on other teams. The rest are easily replaceable.

wilfork is still the best player, but he's not going to be the game changer when it comes to fixing what ails the pats in the passing game.

at this point I'm almost tempted to say if he did go down, at least teams will try to run the ball more and give the secondary a break
