1st and 10 SEA 15 Danny Woodhead right guard for 5 yards (tackle by Earl Thomas and Chris Clemons)

2nd and 5 SEA 10 Danny Woodhead right tackle for 4 yards (tackle by Brandon Mebane and Alan Branch)

3rd and 1 SEA 6 Tom Brady pass incomplete short middle intended for Wes Welker is intercepted by Earl Thomas at SEA--3 and returned for 23 yards (tackle by Tom Brady)

this was it...... a first down here and a TD or even an FG would have pretty much iced the game, but what happened was letting the seahawks off the mat and they pummeled the pats from this point on.

the were running the ball pretty well....they needed to keep running the ball....if you can't gain a yard in 2 tries, you deserve to lose the game in the same manner the pats lost it

There were a couple instances where we'd string together a couple good runs, then come out in the spread and completely ignore not only the run game but the idea of at least making their guys respect a possible run. It was horrible. Brady and the secondary were probably the biggest reasons for the loss but the playcalling was a pretty big factor and pretty terrible.

Terrible play calling.

I almost wanna say McDaniels should be fired on the spot.

The Patriots moved their ball from their own 30 to the Seahawks 7 with 7 passing plays.

They were passing the ball well.

On a series after this, they ran the ball 3 straight times and punted.

They gained 9 yards on those first 2 plays, and were stuffed on the 3rd down.

If the Patriots passed 7 times for gains from their own 30 to the Seahawks 7, then ran the ball and were stuffed 3 times, people would be *****ing and moaning.

The one good point you made regardless is the FG. You need points on the board there. But you're also thinking about putting the game away for good with a TD, no? You have 15 minutes left in the game. A field goal still means only a 2 score lead with 2 point conversions.

They blew it regardless. But I don't think it was the decision to go exclusively run or pass.

The ball was slippery from the rain AND Brady had thrown 3 almost-INTs.

He's lucky he only ended the game with 2 INTs. Seahawks had chances to pick off a few more.

I'm with you. That was one of the stupidest set of plays this team has done in a long time.

Was shaking my head at that playcall: you've just got 9 yards from two run plays. Now you only need a yard for a 1st down and you throw it??????

FFS!

there was a ridley run for 3 yards in there, too

typical law of averages says that this one should have been a TD.

it appears they always make the 'right call' on the next drive only to have it sniffed out by the defense.

i think while mcdaniel draws some stuff up nicely, that ever since the cassell season, the book is out on him. everyone has caught up to his tendencies.

The whole time I was thinking that this was the Patriots getting their killer instinct back. Thought there was no way they didn't have two run plays lined up at that point, one for the 3rd and 1 and one if they failed.

I angrily punch the couch every time there's a 3rd and short situation with a shotgun 5 WR set. My couch takes quite a beating.

Huh? That was 100% on Brady. Welker was open and it would have been a first down if Brady didn't throw it high and hard on a three yard pass. Unless McDaniels told Brady to throw a hard 20 yard laser pass on a short crossing route, the blame goes 100% on Brady on that play.

Seriously, people want to blame McDaniels for everything that goes wrong with the offense. That was clearly not his fault.

True again. It was a horrible play to call, but you still have to execute the play that is called. It was there. Ten guys did their job, Brady f-d up.

I don't think it was a horrible play call especially because Welker was open for the first down. It can't be a horrible play call if the receiver is wide open and the only reason the Pats didn't convert was because Brady threw a horrible pass. It was horrible execution by Brady, not a horrible play call.

We have the #1 ranked offense in the NFL. Caught up to his tendencies?

I do....you have a 2 score lead and the line was moving their DL at the moment. another quick snap run would have gotten them a first down. or at worst an FG.

I strongly disagree. The play calling was abysmal. Brady should have been running play action all game long and there should have been much better balance with the running game.

The Seattle defense was decent - not great. That defense was very aggressive with the receivers and in the empty backfield, the defensive line just teed off. Play action and more running plays would have held the linebackers and opened up more in the middle.

The play calling is also completely at fault for not kicking two more field goals that would have won the game. That pass play with 6 seconds left in the half was ridiculous.

didn't we have the #1 offense without him last year?

for the year, the pats are 10% worse in the red zone

And the play they called would have given you a first down or at worst a FG. The chance of a tip pass INT on that play is probably the same odds of a RB fumbling and losing the ball in the same exact situation. The problem is that the minuscule percentage of a tip ball INT actually happened.

Here are the facts:
  • Going into this game. Brady had one INT for the entire season. Ridley has two fumbles. To say that the odds are higher that Brady would have thrown an INT was that high is revisionist history.
  • Brady to Welker was on fire up to that point in the game. He already had 6 catches for 96 yards and a TD.
  • The Pats' running game was struggling all game.

People are using hindsight to judge the play. A short crossing pass to Welker is a high percentage play for this offense. Ninety-nine times out of hundred, the worst that would have happened is the Pats would have gotten an incompletion an either run on 4th down or kick the field goal. If Brady completed the pass to Welker, no one would have said that the Pats were lucky because going to Welker on third down is a risky play.

You put the ball in the air 58 times and bad things are going to happen. Sure, if each play is executed perfectly and the way they should be it will work but that doesn't always happen, no player is perfect.

Just because Brady was bad and the main person at fault doesn't mean the playcalling wasn't bad as well. 58 passes, that's never a good idea no matter who your QB is or what the matchup says.

The Seahawks have been shutting down the run all game. The Pats got 3.3 YPC. The Seahawks have the 4th best run defense in terms of yards allowed and second best in yards per attempt. Not only do they have a great run defense, but they have one of the best run defenses in the league.

So I don't get how people saying that the Pats going with what was working all game up to that point (Brady to Welker) is a bad call and going with what the Pats were struggling against was the right call. In this game, the Pats couldn't run the ball.

Also, that play with 6 second left in the half was Belichick's call to run a play (not McDaniels) and people choose to ignore that if Brady actually threw the ball near an actual receiver, the Pats still would have had enough time to kick the field goal. That was another execution issue more than play calling. Brady could have thrown to Gronk who was wide open, but threw to no one and got the intentional grounding (although that might have been Branch's fault for not running the right route).

Exactly, it's not just the fact that we threw it 58 times, but hardly any of those were PAP which has been working brilliantly all season long. Of course your QB is going to make mistakes when he's got a wet ball for one and the entire defense is focused on stopping HIM.
