The Official B!tch about the secondary/pass coverage thread

And to think how much we have spent on the secondary. For this end result.

So many draft picks.

time to get new coaches, boyer has been with the team for 4 or 5 years and has nothing to show for in the secondary performance.

Rather than a gazillion threads on the defensive backs and pass coverage, post all your thoughts on this unit here.
This seems to be fact: every team we play tosses up long pop-ups on 3rd down and one of two things happens. Either a PI call or a completion. Honestly, I'm not being facetious here, but if I were playing against the Pats, I'd throw every, single down because you know one or the other is going to occur. That final TD was given up while we were in a semi-prevent defense. Unbelievable. But, at least as large a problem is the fact that with a lead, our offense simply can't close out. I shudder to think what our record would be if it weren't for the fumbles caused by our front 7.

Anyone that says the secondary is good, or even decent, is just living in denial.

However, Belichick is ALSO living in denial, so I guess it's not that bad. I wish I was blissfully ignorant to how bad the problem was as so many people inside and outside of Gillette are.

I think the only passes Wilson missed all day were the ones he over or under threw. Tavon Wilson had one beautiful pass he batted down. Besides that, it was a friggin joke.

You get PIs and don't turn around for the ball when you are basically beaten on a play and playing catchup. That's fine and happens even to the best when you are playing 1 on 1 man, but this isn't whats happening for the most part.

The problem is, you shouldn't be beaten long in a prevent D or a Dime. This isn't a question of athleticism, its a question of coaching. Our safeties are taking insanely bad angles, and thats coachable.

An example of what its supposed to look like is the Tavon Wilson bat down pass. Easy! Its not even a question of athleticism, height or ball skills. He was in the proper position and was able to make the simple play.

Our DBs practice against midget slot guys and a possession receiver that falls down after the catch. ZERO repetitions verses deep threats.
They triple team Vincent Jackson last year and he still torched them. Baltimore's Smith torched them....Today it was Rice. It's the most confused group I've ever seen and one thing is certain....These players regress. It's coaching and scheme.

If we had one stud back in the secondary we may have one a few more SB'S.

We all know this SO.. why hasn't BB addressed this?

There is no logical reason I can think of.

It seems like i finally get redemtion since 2006 where i said this defense cost this team 3 superbowls ya that's right 3 superbowls...I got banned and criticized for my comments, well guys the chickens have come home to roost..

Brady aint getting any better,he is on the downside of his career if the defense does not get better forget another superbowl...IMO

Because of his ego. There is no other reason that I can think of

BB has invested many high draft picks on DBs. Unfortunately, they have all been flawed, often fatally.

Wish we could swallow pride and bring Mangini back to his secondaries coach role.

This is the worst secondary in coverage I've ever seen. It wasn't that long ago I thought we'd nailed it with McCourty and Chung back there. No lead is safe. No quarterback looks bad against these guys. If the Pats force a punt I'm celebrating like they just scored. Forget about keeping the defense honest. Any decent OC should just throw against this team EVERY SINGLE TIME.

BB declined a holding penalty against the Hawks because he didn't want to give them an extra chance to throw downfield. Who turns down a chance at 2nd and 19? A coach with an absolute disaster of a secondary.

It's gotten old. Two SB's have been lost because the team couldn't make a stop when it mattered. Something has to give. It places so much pressure on the offense to score every possession. I could feel this game slipping away in the third quarter.

I have no idea who coaches the secondary but whoever that is needs to be fired. These players are not technically sound in how they play their positions. NONE of them are getting better at their jobs. NONE OF THEM!!
I've never seen a group of DB's so incapable of playing the ball because they NEVER LOOK for the ball. Mindboggling!!
Horrible DB technique week after week after week = horrible DB coaching week after week after week
When are the mediots going to get after BB about this??

no they wont because you critizize the pats you are banned and black marked on this site...

No, it is only when ALL you post is negativity that this might happen.

Most posters occasionally post criticism. But they also post insights, jokes, stats, breakdowns, analyses and, wow, even ... COMPLIMENTS (*gasp*)!

I would suggest to you that your posting is rather 1 dimensional.

No. Only the biggest homer in the universe would think that legitimate criticism of a clearly flawed team is "baby crying."

Only other NFL team unhappy with Pats Loss: New York Giants. Praying New England is #1 seed in AFC this year, and runs the table into SB in New Orleans.

We had our best secondary when mangini was coaching it ... :bricks::bricks::bricks:

Does anyone honestly think this defense can win a close game next week? I don't care if its Sanchez, Tebow, Chase Rettig, or Brockton High's quarterback - this secondary/defense isn't holding a lead of anything less than three touchdowns in the second half. This season they have wins against Buffalo, Denver, and Tennessee...in all three losses this season they have blown second half leads...pretty bad for a team that used to shut the door and throw away the key on both offense and defense.
the eternal optimists will say the jets suck, blad, blah, blah, but guess what - they have the same record as the Pats and two ****e quarterbacks....I would venture to say that their defense has blown fewer second half leads than the Patriots this season...

Root of the secondary's problems: Evaluation of talent or coaching?

They've invested at least a 1st or second round pick in every draft since 2007:

2007. 1st on Meriweather, 6th on Mike Richardson
2008. 2nd on Wheatley, 4th on Wilhite
2009. 2nd on Chung, 2nd on Butler
2010. 1st on McCourty
2011. 2nd on Dowling (1st pick of the second round), 7th on Malcolm Williams
2012. 2nd on Wilson, 6th on Ebner, 7th on Dennard

So in the last 6 years, they've invested two 1st round and five 2nd round draft picks. Off the top of my head the only significant contracts during that time were for Steve Gregory (3yrs $9 million), Sanders (3yrs $9 million, Springs 3yrs $10.5 million and Bodden 4 yrs $22 million - all three were gone within a year of signing their contract.

So we've got two one's and five 2nds as well as roughly $50 million dollars in free agent contracts invested in this secondary.

So is it talent evaluation or something else? Is it how their coached up? Is it scheme? Are they thinking too much? Even when they have coverage, they don't seem to have a clue where the ball is. It's an automatic completion or a penalty.

One thing for certain is that the secondary is this teams Achilles's heel and whatever they're doing ain't working.
