idle thoughts - The Seattle match ups

There'll be focus on contain with Wilson however people shouldn't use that as an excuse for not getting any pressure. Our pass rush has been woeful. It needs to be better. We can't give Wilson the same time we've been affording other QBs and allow him to get comfortable...this guy can play.

jones has been doing his job...drawing double teams and having an impact, and Ninkovich needs to step up and start dialling up pressure with these single match ups as he's been a non factor. Throw the Manning strip sack in there all you want, he was led up field initially and only good coverage allowed him to get there.
WOW are you kidding me!!!! Ninko has to "step it up" What part of a sack 5 tackles 2 forced fumbles game didn't you watch. Are you aware that he has virtually the same stats as the universally admired Chandler Jones. That he leads the team in forced fumbles (tied with Spikes with 3). That he's been outstanding for the last 3 games, and has been a key part of the 6th highest rated DL according to FO's

How exactly would you like him to "step it up" Perhaps he can grow a few inches, increase his arm length. and weight. Maybe it would help if he turned black and grew dreads. This is why I rail so much against haters like yourself. NOTHING is good enough. If you are not an all pro, you need to be cut. No double digit sacks, see ya! You guys show a consistent lack of any real understanding about the game and how it is played. Not only that, you are mean spirited and unfair to the players you constantly deride.

Ninko has gone from some no name that was brought in to see if he could land a job as long snapper to a trusted competent starter at TWO different positions. He's nothing less than one of BB's best scrap heap finds of his Patriots coaching tenure.

Step it up?. I tell you what UK, YOU need to step it up,

I never knew TB has never played a game in seattle
Think about this. After Sunday, the only NFL field that Tom Brady HASN'T played on in his illustrious career will be be Candlestick Park. The very field he so often used to go to root for his hometown Niners. Now that is ironic.

I'm not sold on the Seahawk defense. They have faced some weak offenses. Outside of a clearly sputtering GB they have seen some of the worst offenses in the NFL.

They're good, no doubt. But I agree. This weekend, the world will know just how good they are.

Have you been watching the games? I agree with Ken, you need to step up your posts and observations.

PFK - Love you man. But, you've missed a few things.

1) Screwed this one up... go to #2

2) The Seattle defense hasn't faced any high powered offenses except the fumbling/stumbling Packers. Of the other 4 teams they've faced, none of them has a great offense.

3) All this talk about the HEIGHT of the Seattle secondary. There is a reason that BB has preferred the smaller (under 6'0) quicker WRs. Because, the taller CBs that teams covet tend to not have good hip flexibility. Which usually means they end up a step or more behind the smaller WRs after they go into their break. It will be interesting to see if that secondary can hold up against the Pats offense.

It's going to be a tough game. But like Denver last week, Seattle hasn't faced an offense like the Pats. Brady HAS played in Seattle before so he knows what it's going to be like. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see the high tempo no huddle going since its silent count worked so well last week..

Are you seriously arguing that Ninkovich has played well? Outside of a 4-5 play stretch he has been invisible.

1) The Seattle Stadium is a DOME. It will be closed for the game. So the rain and cold won't matter.

Seattle hasn't been a dome for years.

EDIT: Beat to the punch.

OK DB here we go.

1. As Metaphor and you have done a service to point out that the Seattle hasn't exactly faced any high power offenses.....except the Packers, and btw - that is a high power as you get and they put up 8 sacks on Rogers....which imo only shows the effect of the the Seattle home field more. But no question your input DOES make me feel better about the game.

2. HOWEVER - you can only play who is on the schedule and the Pats haven't played top notch defenses either. In fact the best defense they've faced so far did a great job in holding that offense down....and that was in Gillette....not in the best home field in the league.

3. You also can't overlook that they DO have excellent talent on the DL and excellent talent in the DB.

4. While CB's "tend" to lose quickness and hip flexibility as they get taller, that's doesn't mean all tall CB's don't have good quickness. There are exceptions and it seems that these 2 are very good in press coverage.....the exact coverage that causes the Pats the most problems

5. Like I said Welker gets a free release off the LOS and he'll be tough to cover. If Welker is forced to try and beat tough press coverage, then he's going to be the one having trouble getting open. That's why I think you are going to see him or Hernandez (if he plays) in motion a lot.

6. That being said, I really hope you are spot on. ;) But I think we are going to see some long stretches where the Pats are going to struggle passing the ball. I see this week where we see a lot of incompletions and short runs interspersed with big plays, because the Seahawks play a very aggressive style of defense that lends itself to hit or miss plays, and when we "hit" them, we need to hit them big.

I have a lot of Seahawk fan friends that think this will be their first test of the season, thinking they got lucky against GB.

I don't watch much Seattle football despite my local network cramming them down my throat. What I have seen shows that if we get ahead by 10 or more points, this will give us a huge advantage. These guys can't climb back despite our porous secondary.

The Patriots haven't looked so hot with their first possession. If they score on that first drive and make a couple first quarter stops, the crowd will quiet down. The rain and crowd are what makes Seattle a tough place to play. If any team is prepared for this, it will be our Pats.

I don't think Wilson is very good, but our DL will be instructed to stay in their rush lanes and keep him in the pocket so he will have time to make plays.

Nice post, interesting to note that Brady is 24-5 against top 5 NFL defenses in his career

Stand corrected. For some reason I thought that when they re-did it, that the roof could be closed if needed..

The baseball field next door has a retractable roof, but not CenturyLink.

The matchups will be tough, hopefully the running game gets going.

1. If you were to choose a CB in the league to have after Revis, Richard Sherman would be up there. I expect him 1 on 1 with Lloyd.

2. With the arrival of Sherman and Browner, the Seahawks have moved their long time veteran #1 CB Marcus Trufant to the slot. I expect him on Welker.

3. Browner will probably be placed on Hernandez or Gronk, at 6'4, I think he would be a poor matchup with Welker or Edelman.

4. Throw in the best safety duo in the league, and it could be tough going through the air.
We are going to torch that secondary. The idea that a bigger corner has an advantage against a quicker WR is overrated. The way to beat a jam is to avoid it not run through it. Quickness is the most important asset to beat a jam not strength, and when a quick WR beats a big corners jam, its all over.

Word. If the Pats' can get off the jams then they could definitely exploit a quickness advantage against the bigger Seattle DBs. I expect this to be a major focus of their offensive game plan.

The New England Patriots special teams need to contain Leon Washington on kick returns and punt returns.

2012 Seattle Seahawks Statistics & Players - Pro-Football-Reference.com

Leon Washington. Now there's a familiar name. I wonder why we didn't poach him from the Jets. We seem to sign every other player they let go! Would have been a nice boost to the return game too.

The Seattle game will be predicated on turnovers. If the Pats can continue to hold onto the football and force Seattle to turnovdr 2-3 tmes, I think that gives the Pats a solid advantage that the Hawks won't be able to overcome.

Ball security must be double and triple emphasized for the upcoming game. Turnovers by the Pats will get the crowd in an absolute uproar, and make it that much tougher to play with good concentration.

Otherwise, overall talent-wise, I don't think the Seahawks can hang with the pats offensively. Shut down Lynch and the run and Wilson is not going to be a threat to beat you. Let's show the Seahawks what an ELITE offense can do! As long as the Pats don't forget to keep run balance and just play their game they should walk out of this with the victory!

When I was in High School I played OC for 3 years, at anywhere from 165-190 lbs. At least by year 2, I was stronger than most anyone I would face.
Every team played an odd man front, so there was always a nose.
Some used the biggest guy they had on the nose. Others used RBs, who were small and quick.
It was 10 times easier to beat the 250lb guy and never let him anywhere near the ball carrier than to not get outquicked by the small guy who I could manhandle if I got on him.
Same thing here. Brandon Marshall tries to muscle through press coverage. That means an Ellis Hobbs kind of corner has to play off him or get brutalized, but a big strong corner will go toe to toe. The strength is neutralized.
With a Welker type, sure the big corner is stronger, but he needs to get his hands on him. An equally quick corner would be a tougher matchup in press coverage for WWW.

I think the Seahawks gave Washington a pretty big contract while he was still rehabbing from a broken leg.

I thought that Leon Washington wanted too much money to be a Patriot.

I don't think that the Pats will have success with the faster paced no huddle because of the noise. Tommy LomBrady told us that and I believed him.

I think the Pats will have a good shot at running the ball, and as always I'm hoping that they run it a lot. That makes their passing game even better.

The Seahawks don't have enough of a passing game to overcome a poor running game. If we stop their running game they're dead and it'll be a blowout.

The Jets traded Washington to Seattle for a 5th round pick during the 2010 draft. We never had a chance to get him.
