Yesterday's game showed us what it is like when Manning truly does not have a competitive team to go against the Patriots. Of all of the previous games, this was the one that showed the most one-sided advantage for Belichick's Patriots against him.

While our view is obscured by the collapse of the 2011 Colts after having no viable backup plan when PM went down, the truth is that those Colts teams of the 2000s were very strong in many areas, and this rivalry was much more than Brady versus Manning. The Colts, while in stark contrast to the Pats defense, had a great pass rush with bookend DEs in Freeney and Mathis, a not-so-good but not terrible group of LBs led by Brackett, and a secondary that was underrated, led by Bethea, and was better than the Patriots secondary from from 2007 onward. When Bob Sanders was healthy, this was a top ten defense. Even in the 2007 season, we hit a huge speed bump in Indy, as they shut us down for three quarters and nearly handed us our first loss.

Anyone who thinks those Colts teams were led by one player is kidding themselves, although the coin goes both ways. Brady's Patriots were always stocked with great talent as well. So, please do not turn this into a Brady-Manning thread.

But yesterday I saw what pundits had told us we should be seeing for years: a Peyton Manning-led team that was no match for Tom Brady's Patriots, due to the complete mismatches everywhere on the field except QB. I don't recall Manning's old Colts teams ever looking inept on defense, unable to keep the offense within striking distance, and I never saw the critical errors (Thomas' fumble, McGahee's two blunders) that were showcased yesterday. I saw on so many occasions Reggie Wayne or Marvin Harrison making a tremendous catch to keep both feet in bounds, or Dwight Freeney sacking Brady on the most critical play of the game.

It really is too bad that history will remember the Colts as a one man show, as it is so disrespectful to so many great athletes from those teams.

It didn't really teach me, more like it reinforced what I already thought----I hated those Colts teams more for Dungy than for Manning.

I wouldnt say Denver isnt a good team. They have solid WR core, a decent running game and a pretty good defense

the score couldve been alot closer, You have to give some credit to the Pats defense, Denver left points on the board because of:

1. Moore forcing the fumble
2. Ninkovichs strip-sack
3. the forced fumble on Mcgahee

the pats also controlled the time of posession running the ball which kept manning off the field.

So beating the Colts 20-3 in the 2004 playoffs wasn't as one sided as this game? Huh.

I dont quite follow the OP's thoughts here.

we won by what 10 points?

If we don't get that fumble on the first drive by denver, it very well could have been a TD.

This game ended up much closer then it needed to be, but denver is a decent team when they are on.

I think McD (and maybe BB to a lesser extent) really wanteed this game.

They saved the up-tempo game plan for this time for a reason (and it probably wasn't due to injuries/personnel). While it's similar to what we run as an offense, it was much faster paced and as Gronk mentioned about as fast as the refs could go (I think I even saw a potential penality s one ref was still movign behind Brady when the ball snapped).

Then again, why save this for a division rival because they aren't as competitive (like the dolphins did with the wildcat that time).

I disagree completely. The Colts were a one-sided team, with more money locked up in star offensive players and pass-rushing D-ends expecting to play with a lead. Everything revolved around Peyton.

What drove this home for me is that during the game, the uniforms barely registered. As far as I was concerned, it felt like a Pats vs. Colts game, or really just Belichick/Brady vs. Manning.

The thing that gets lost is that Colts defense actually had a great performance in the first half, holding us to 6 points and getting Manning plenty of chances. Manning just couldn't generate any drives and eventually the D wore down. Against an offense like our 2004 version that is bound to happen to any D. Despite those 2 long drives I might hafta say that once the 2004 Pats really hit their stride, that Colts D probably did a better job stopping us than anyone else. They were just hung out to dry and we were that good that year.

Colts-Pats for a while were basically the real superbowls. This game taught me that it's not the same.

This thread has taught me that once the Pats beat a team, many here think the team wasn't very good after all.

Before the game, the Broncos were being called a real test of the Patriots, where we'd see where we really stand against a strong offense and a very good Defense. Now the Broncos are a non competitive team with Manning at QB.:confused2:

Yesterday's game had all the juice of a Colts-Patriots game. It was great.

God help my heart if these two teams meet in the playoffs.

It will be terrific.

Well, some may claim that. But considering they beat Pitt, and rolled the Raiders, their losses are to Atlanta, Houston and the Pats while they were competitive in all three games, reasonable people should not count them out.

This is their remaining schedule. I see lots of wins here.

Yesterday felt kinda like Colts-Pats to me, except that I didn't dislike, or even generally mind, the opponent. Turns out that I never really had a problem with Manning after all, I just couldn't stand Polian, Dungy, and all of the other sanctimonious blowhards that backed that team.
