I don't get the point of having a contract with mutual options. If either side can back out of the contract after every season, what is the point of having a three year deal. These must be incentive based options like if Belichick win the Super Bowl he can nulify his remaining year or if he has a losing season Kraft can do the same. Otherwise, either side could threaten to exercise their option every year to renegotiate the contract in their favor based on how well the Pats did that year.

Yea that was what the Raiders said because they were mad Schefter was the first to report Shell was getting fired, and guess what happened? Shell was fired. FWIW Borges said in his chat a couple weeks ago that Bellichick had 1 year left with a team option for 08.

A classic reasoning error is when you believe that something must be true, therefore it is true.

Schefter wants to make it appear as if there's a coaching bonanza in the works for 2008, so he's implying that because Belichick might be able to void his contract, he will do so.

Of course, that begs a simple question--what possible logic could there be in his going elsewhere? Until someone can give me a plausible answer to this, I'll take Schefter's column with a truckload of salt.

Shefter was the first one on the Portis-Bailey trade a few years ago and people laughed at him. Like him or not, he's a pretty good information guy although none of them are always right.

It is what it is. Let's hope for a big 2007 and hope for the best. All things being equal I think Belichick will be here longer than that but things change. Relationships change. People need change. We'll see.

Why not mutual clauses? We have two people who respect each other as individuals and as businessmen in the NFL. It is not unknown for such relationships to go sour - if one or the other can't deal with the (potential) problems they have the option to cut the tie. BB has the leverage to make such a deal with an owner, and Bob Kraft has the business smarts to negotiate a mutual contract that protects the team, but also respects the best coach in the NFL.

As usual, I don't understand worry over BB's departure. He and Scott Pioli are clearly loving the challenge of maintaining a winner. They have Bob and Jonathan Kraft who clearly believe in that vision and are working hand in glove with BB/SP to maintain that winner.

Even a blind squirrel, etc., and this guy has his Blackberry w/ him when he's taking a dump, but he gets paid for "scoop." Yeah, had this deal, and reported Shell being fired, but who didn't see that one coming?

I've watched NFL Total Access nearly every day since the network debuted back in Nov04; it's my wife's and my "must see TV." I don't write down what he says, so I can't substantiate this assertion, but he's dead wrong more often than he's right.

Right on both counts.

The Pats frustrate the media because they are reticent w/ doling out info, and do precious little that's controversial. That's why they blow up handshakes, hoodies, and over-exuberant celebrations into more than they are. It's the same w/ this.

Correct information is correct information. Almost every source thinks Belichick can leave after 2007 IF HE WANTS TO. That IF is a step that most reporters stop at, there's not a strong indication he wants to leave.

OK, fine, let's break this down, then:

How about: "There are reports that Belichick's contract, which has three years remaining, contains clauses that could allow him or the team to nullify the deal as early as next year." I'd have no problem w/ that, but that's not what Schefter reported. That I have a problem with.
