So, last yr i was upset at some of the moves the pats made in the draft when it happened
i liked some of the moves and didnt like some others
while i was wrong some of the times, others maybe i wasnt
anyway here is what my first five rounds would have been last april (not now, not hindsight, what i would have done then) and how my draft looks now
pls paste yours on here too

1-manny lawson
personally i felt like we needed linebackers, and i voiced that opinion last yr big time, i wanted a rb too, but i felt linebacker was a huge need and that lawson was a great athlete and could become a true playmaker here, a couple months before the draft i reallly really wanted deangelo williams, maroney, or addai, but im not gonna sit here and lie to you, the day before the draft i wanted lawson or one of the other first rd lbers, and i felt like lawson could fit nicely as a weakside lber in our system
06 stats: 48 solo tackles, 9 assisted, 57 total, 2.5 sacks, 1 int, 2 pass deflections
pats pick-maroney
pats win this one

2-(i would not have traded up, and would have kept the pick they gave to the packers) GREG JENNINGS
i LOVED this guy
i mean i basically had a man crush on this guys game
you can check the archives, i talked about this guy like it was my job
06 stats: 45 rec, 632 yds, 14.0 avg, 3 tds, 5 punt ret-29 yds
AND, he had a bad ankle sprain for half the season that totally slowed him down, when i watched this guy last yr i said his game reminded me of jerry rice's, im not saying he'd be as good, jus a similar style
pats pick-extra third and this for chad jackson, i win this one pretty big (for now), especially when you see who my third rd pick was

3-(again this is the one they traded for chad jackson)
jerrious norwood
at first i wanted a back with the first round pick as i explained, then when we let willie go that changed a little and i started looking at guys that would be there in the rds from 3-5, two guys i liked were norwood and jerome harrison, but i loved norwood's big play ability
06 stats: 99 carries, 633 yds, 6.4 AVG!!!!, 2tds, 12 rec, 102 yds
again, i win this one as i took norwood and jennings as opposed to pats taking chad jack (again guys this is as of now, i know that chad jackson could become an amazing nfl receiver, but as of now he hasnt done much, and jennings has done a ton more, i know thats not to say he woulda done that with us, this is just for fun)

3-ko simpson
i wanted a safety last yr badly as geno's game has declined a lot
i liked simpson, especially at this spot
06 stats: 51 solo, 26 ast, 77 total tackles, 1 sack, 2 ints, 4 pds, 1 forced fumble
pats pick-david thomas
it looks as though i maybe won this one slightly, but i like thomas now, so id call it a wash

4-gabe watson
i was so shocked this guy fell this far, and going into day two i said we had to take him just because
because we dont really have a great backup for wilfork
and because he shouldve gone higher
and because hes from michigan and i love those guys
06 stats: 12 solo, 4 ast, 16 total, 1 sack
pats pick-garret mills
undecided, since mills didnt play
although with pass prob gone this might end up bein a great pick by the pats

4-MARK ANDERSON
another guy like greg jennings
if you look to the archives you'll see that i was crazy about this guy
originally i wanted him in the third
but then going into the draft i saw he'd prob fall a lil
and here we didnt even need to take him
couldve waited to the fifth
but last april i would not have waited
i woulndt have waited one second into the time
i wouldve made the call as soon as we were on the clock
cuz i loved this guy
06 stats: 23 solo, 5 ast, 28 total tackles, 12 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, 2 pd
pats pick: gostkowski
well, i really like gostkowski now, but they might have been able to get him with their next pick
either way anderson would have been a great pick here
although, he is a de with da bears, wouldve been an olb with us, so maybe he wouldnt have done as well
still, he has played very well this yr for a fifth rder
lets say me and the pats both win with these picks

5-parys haralson
i know, i know
another linebackeer
but i really liked this guy, and just would not have been able to see him go by me
i promise i wouldve stopped with the linebackers after this, and taken a kicker after
(and, if i hadnt taken haralson, i wouldve taken pat watkins, another guy i liked)
06 stats: 4 solo, thats it!
(06 stats for watkins: 30 solo, 8 ast, 38 total tackles, 3 int, 7 pd, 2 forced fumbles)
pats pick: ocallaghan
pats win this one
although had i taken watkins, who i wouldve considered it would prob be a wash

overall first five rounds:
rb-maroney vs norwood (pats win, but not by as much as you think)
linebacker-nobody vs lawson, anderson, haralson (i win HUGE in this one)
te-thomas vs nobody (pats obv win pretty big, even though i kinda wanted a te i didnt find one in the right spot)
fb/te-mills vs nobody (again pats win)
ot-ocallaghan vs nobody (pats win)
wr-chad jack vs jennings (i win pretty big-for now)
s-nobody vs simpson (i win)
dt-nobody vs watson (i win, barely)
k-gost vs nobody (pats win huge)

so, wadya think
and anyone got one of their own?

I'm looking forward to the next draft, not back to the last (which was pretty damn good, if you ask me).

Hindsight is 20/20.

You gotta wait at least 2 more years to make an evaluation.

Besides, going back and saying "here's what I would've done in the draft" is the most pointless exercise. Just trying doing it for any Celtics draft in the Pitino era and you'll soon want to kill yourself.

I think in two years we're going to look back at the 06 draft and see that Maroney, Jackson, Dave Thomas, Ryan O'Callaghan, Ghost & Mills are all huge contributors on the team.

honestly, im not trying to make any points here
this was just for fun to see how mine would have matched up against the pats FOR NOW
i know you cant truly evaluate til like three yrs after

How is this not hindsight?

reviewing it now is
but my picks i listed werent
those are the picks i would have made in april
how is THAT hindsight

Unless you didn't read, watch, listen, smell, taste, or hear anything about the NFL all this season, these picks are hindsight.

Then this thread is all about how you were "right" last April?

Do you want a medal?

I know this was Manny Lawson's first year in the league but he got schooled on a regular basis. I watched him a lot because my friend is a niners fan and watched them after the Pats played of course. I really liked this years draft. Maroney will be a stud in time, every rookie hits the wall. As much as I love Chad Jackson's ability, I hope he makes major strides this offseason. I love what David Thomas brings to the table, Ghost played very well this year, O'Callahan had a great start until Kazcur came back and we didn't see enough of Andrews. Overall, it was a great draft and we will get a clearer picture come next year.

no, this wasn't to show how i was right
i was right some of the times
i was wrong some of the times
this thread was for fun
an end of the yr evaluation of the draft SO FAR
and to see what everyone elses pix woulda been FOR FUN

I think in two years we're going to look back at the 06 draft and see that Maroney, Jackson, Dave Thomas, Ryan O'Callaghan, Ghost & Mills are all huge contributors on the team.

And then we will say goodbye to all of them except Maroney. Four year contracts maximum for rookies exc. first rounders with RFA eligibility after 3. WE CAN NO LONGER WAIT THREE YEARS FOR A PLAYER TO DEVELOP!!! This clause in the new CBA was designed for and aimed directly at the Patriots. We used to wrap rooks in nice long contracts and take our time to develop them. Those days are over. Year 1 production, year 2 stand our performance and year 3 excellence is now required to get real value from our picks. Oh, yeah before anyone suggests extending CJ's or anyones contract now, no contracts can be extended before the conclusion of the second season. Like I said, this new CBA was meant to directly hammer this team and its effort to stay deep at all positions without exposing itself to cap busting FA's.
We got hosed Davey, we got hosed.

That is a bytch.

But what choice do we have? We still have to draft the players with the most potential, Chad Jackson was that. The good news is, if he doesn't blossom till year 2 or 3, it's less on his resume and makes him easier to extend/sign after year 4.

Hey, I'm willing to admit and remind others that I wanted the Patriots to draft Chad Jackson in the 1st round...

I still think he's going to prove me correct, but I will admit, whether its injury or something else, there's reason for concern, even though its far too early to give up on the kid.
