Al is still the same! I saw a brief clip on the press conference for the Raiders' new head coach. Ann Killion, who is a respected sports writer for the San Jose Mercury News asks Kiffin how it feels to be the seventh head coach for the troubled team, Oakland, Black Hole for coaches as it is, in ten years. Before Kiffin can answer, you hear Davis' familiar voice saying "I don't know why you say that Ann", camera pans over to him and he goes on to say:

Who played in a championship game in 2000?
Who played in a super bowl in 2002?
Who would have played in a super bowl in 2001 if it hadn't been for the tuck rule?
What other team can say they did all this?

Well, duh, maybe the Patriots did more, a megaton more, Al!!!!

I don't know if Kiffin ever got to speak. The old buzzard will never change.
Josh McD was smart to not pursue the head job there, if he was indeed asked if he was interested.

Whomever comes on after Felger on ESPN radio was playing clips from the PC and it was just mind numbing. Al rambled at length about USC - a team he's had his eye on for 30 years since 1959 (honest to god, that's what he said) and he's always loved their explosive offense so he wanted to talk to the guy whose been calling the plays...the ESPN guy pointed out that he should have been talking to Norm Chow because this year USC was anything but explosive. Al said the organization needed to get younger and then pointed out he now had the youngest HC in the league...Then the new coach talked about how we are gonna practice so hard that games will be easy... Chided the media for bringing up Joey Porter's production when he didn't play last year (duh...). Randy and the boys are gonna eat this college coordinator alive.

I have a cousin out in SD who became a Raiders fan as a kid (when we were the Patsies). That black hole crap really sucked young guys in. He and I went around pretty good during the Snow Bowl game. He now says we have nothing to talk about until Al gets planted.

Norm Chow was passed over once again. It is a tragedy this guy never got a team. I guess diversity only helps to get an NFL job if you're African American and not any other minority. Flame away all you want, but it's the truth.

yeah, that line amused me. wasn't Pittsburg the top seed in the AFC that year? wasn't everything he mentioned 5 or more years ago? isn't Al's animated corpse holding up well?

Does Chow want to be a head coach? Has he interviewed anywhere? I don't know, just asking.

Too bad for Al that the tuck rule is an actual rule I guess . . . he;s also forgetting that he still had to beat Pittsburgh. Poor Al. It can't be fun to grow old in public.

Along with that when he FINALLY did get to the Super Bowl his team got embarrased. They got completely steam rolled so Hey Al, STFU will you!

I read an interview this year where he expressed his frustration that he's been successful wherever he's gone, but he never gets a call to interview. The article suggested he's been held back by his race.

Actually a sh!tload of white males don't get a chance to be a HC either. I don't even know what race Chow is - is he oriental ? Regardless, there's only 32 jobs and there's a young fad going on right now. I don't think Dean Pees is going to get a call either.

Based on Chow's success, there is something discriminatory about the fact that Chow has never gotten even a college head coaching job (something Pees has had). Also, it's pretty weird that the new USC offensive coordinator just got the Raiders job, as USC's offense this year was a major dropoff from what it used to be under Chow.

I hate to call a spade a spade, but if you're a minority and not Black, you're pretty much screwed.

I don't think so, you could compile a huge list of successful coordinators who never got a chance - how many non black minorities are there in coaching, btw ?

Weird that the Raiders didn't pick him ? Not really, Davis has a history of picking young, untested offensive guys - Madden, Shanahan, Gruden.

Yeah, there's even the mandate that teams have to interview at least one black person while in the process of finding a new head coach. How long is that going to last? The NFL head coach percentage of blacks already exceeds the national percentage of blacks vs. the entire population. One commentator over the weekend, can't remember, so many of them, said we shouldn't rest until the percentage equals that of the players in the NFL. I don't think that's going to happen.
