Cruising around over at patriotplanet, I came accross this article;

http://cbs.sportsline.com/columns/story/9949386

Certainly an interesting read. While the Merrimen line made me giggle quite a bit, this line really got my attention.

Watch Pioli use the Patriots' first-round draft picks to get a receiver, whether trading up to get Georgia Tech's Calvin Johnson or Southern California's Dwayne Jarrett, or dealing a pick to a team with a glut at receiver. Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald? New Orleans' Devery Henderson? Not sure. But Pioli will get something done.

 Larry Fitzgerald  He's a total stud receiver. Is this just journalistic license, or has anyone heard of anything similar to this.

Larry is a total #1 horse who could help from day one (not in a few years). With HIM, Reche, Gaffney, Troy (we hope) CJ and our TE's..... Damn, that would be quite a upgrade for Tom huh....... Might clear a little space up in the box for the backs too.

Perhaps, I'm fantasying a bit, but if something like this was possible, what would you give up to make it happen, and would he even be a fit in our scheme.

If he was, I'd cough up Seattle's #1 for starter. LF is more then plenty compensation for twig. Does anyone think we'd even try to be this agreesive at WR.

It would be perfect, but the Cardinals will never do it.

The entire line is hogwash. It would probably take both #1s to get anywhere near high enough for either of the draftees and Fitzgerald is quite possibly the best WR in the league and is in his second season. Not even Arizona woud be stupid enough to trade him for a late first.

That line was enough for me not to even bother clicking on the link.

I doubt they can swing Larry Fitzgerald out of this.

I also doubt the Patriots get any top 10 players at any position, despite them being ~30m under the cap in '07. Its just not Patriot like. I can't really argue with whatever move they make.

To me.

I'd approach Freeney/Clements/Cato June. I'd consider trading up 1st round picks if they can't land a good receiver some where. I also wouldn't not make any offers to Samuel to save pride(I might engage Clements first though).

This offseason will be very interesting.

The article is actually worth reading.

Its just nice to see that not every analyst who writes articles is an idiot.

Bolden then............. They are fat at WR, real fat. Perhaps they are looking for a franchised CB  (AZ has the cash to get it done long term with Samuel and they are terrible there - Rolle and Mackin are horrible), and the #23 pick. I'd do it for either Fitz or Bolden. AZ might consider moving one of their studs for the right price. After all Bryant came in for Fitzgerald and filled QUITE nicely this year (more yds than ANY of our receivers).

Trust me, neither is going anywhere. The only guy that would be an interesting player that Arizona might part with is Bryant Johnson. He is firmly entrentched at #3 and he had a decent second half when Fitz was out.

If I was the Cardinals, I'd think long and hard about Asante and a 1st (and maybe a 3rd or so) for Fitzgerald. Long and hard. And probably say no, but hey, you can always try to fleece the worst front office in the game. Worked for the San Jose Sharks.

As I said..... Macklin and Rolle are terrible. AS equaled and exceeded their combined INT (x5  ). Plus a 1 rounder in a draft FAT with WR's. I'd consider it too.

Problem is the Pats won't push that hard for that kind of number 1 WR. BB just doesn't value the position that much.

How bout Devery Henderson then, not nearly the RECEIVER, but he'd be a solid 1.5 next year.

BB would gladly trade Asante and a late #1 for Fitzgerald. The problem is that so would every other GM in the league including Arizona's. The guy is a force.

Dream if you must, but don't get too attached to the idea.

BTW, Asante had more ints than the entire NE secondary from last year, and that secondary included Asante himself. Sometimes there is more to the story than the CBs.

I think he had as many INTs as the secondary. I don't think it's possible for him to have more if he's part of it. ;)

There was a trade of Clinton Portis and a pick for Champ Bailey once (I think it was a pick, not sure). Something similar could happen again. Not saying it will, as I think it's a pipedream at best, but hey.

Asante of 2006 had more than everyone in 2005. Same guy different year. :p

Sorry if I wasn't clear.

I know...... But fantasies are a wonderful thing, aren't they.

I do understand that it'd never get done, but it is enticing to think about. My hope is that we do use those number #1's, or Asante to somehow secure at the very least a solid 1 or 1.5 that can contribute right away.

Yeah, I know...... the D is a priority next year, but I think we not as weak in the secondary as it seems if we get those guys off IR and to actually play. I just think this offense is 1 good WR away from being explosive.

Why do people put these fantasies in my head...the idea of an offense with brady, fitzgerald, watson, maroney, and cj (if he develops into what he should) is very scary, along with our other contributors as well (faulk, caldwell, gaffney, dillon, thomas, and hopefully graham).

I am just a dreamkiller because I don't know as much as those that might get them started :p

As far as offseason stuff, I am useless except in cases like these where it seems clear that it *won't* happen. I know nothing about the draft and I leave that totally up to Belioli.

As far as huge deals invloving Asante and a first or both firsts I really don't see that happening either. NE has proven to be pretty steadfast in holding position in the first round and has an exemplary track record of finding good players late. If you were building a team would you rather pay a high profile rookie huge money or would you rather get two guys like Mankins and Graham relatively cheap?

The pick went the other way. It was a second and became Tatum Bell.

Fitzgerald was the 2nd or 3rd overall pick in the draft and has a great work ethic and is a great team guy buy all accounts. He's smart, athletic, tall, fast, young, runs great routes..........basically what Moss and TO would have been if they didn't have two cent heads.

The Cardinals aren't trading him.

How could sportsline let that article be released? Sure, it would be great to trade for Larry, but why would the Cards give him up? The worst part is, this guy has no information except for saying our WRs aren't good enough and we need a new one. NEWSFLASH: The Pats draft by best available, unlike teams like the Colts who draft a projected second rounder just because they need someone at that position.

Perhaps a #1 and one of etiher Kaczur/Callaghan, the Cards need a new OL.

This guy is a college basketball writer who just moved over to national columnist last year. It's hard to take anything he says about football, or any other sport not invented by James Naismith, seriously.
