With Manning coming to town and Hightower dealing with a hamstring issue, it's no suprise.

Carpenter should be able to provide a better coverage LB than what T.White brings to the table, which is no knock on his ST play, but he shouldn't be out there too much either.

I cringe when I see White take the field as a Linebacker.

You beat me to it.

I bet your cringe was nowhere 1/2 as bad as my cringe when he started the SB game in February ;)

White doesn't bring anything to the table....in fact he never makes it into the dining room

I guess this answers how Hightower is doing this week

I like Bobby. I would've liked to have seen him on the 53 over White in the first place.

Hightower told reporters after the game that his hammy is 'good'

Patriots translation....... 'I am as close to needing a wheelchair as is possible'

That was my first initial response also, but it could also be a case of this particular gameplanning matchup, as Belichick may see a need to have a guy like Carpenter in there for better potential coverage skills vs Manning.

It may also be a case of simply needing additional depth in case Hightower's hamstring acts up/becomes inflammed when he takes the field on Sunday.

With Seattle coming up, one could even make some sort of low-grade argument that we can use someone like Carpenter to spy Russell Wilson, the oft-moving Seahawks QB.

One just never knows with this team, it could even be a case of "all of the above" in some fashion.

Keeping Hightower sidelined for this game vs DEN may not be a bad idea, especially since hamstrings can be tricky.

Who is being cut?

On the plus side, at least he doesn't have to cover Jake Ballard in games anymore.

hopefully hightower injury isn't that bad

That's precisely what I thought when I read the thread title. I wonder if the two things are even related. I don't want to read too much into anything, though. We'll see as game time draws near what the reports might be.

re: LB Bobby Carpenter coming back to Pats

Soft linebacker going up against a QB who loves to throw, and a running game that keys off the QB. This should be about as safe a game to use Carpenter as any, but I hope to God that we don't need him next week, against Seattle.

I never understood why we kept Rivera over Carpenter. Welcome back!

I also prefer Carpenter over White as a coverage linebacker, although I would never have cut one of our two best STers.

I think this signing is more for the gameplan itself than for Hightower's injury. It's just gravy that it adds for his insurance too. As others have pointed out, it's nerve-wracking seeing Tracy White out there on defense.

To his credit he DID make a tackle for no gain on a running play.
