How much does Brandon Spikes get fined for cheapshot on Scott Chandler?

Huh? It was on the INT return.

I was at the game. I didn't see that.

Maybe you didn't see the play I was talking about.

On a tipped ball, Spikes launched into Chandler after the ball was tipped and nailed him. The Bills coaches were livid and Chandler was very angry as well. The refs were close to giving him 15 for that.

The ball was in the air a pretty long while and almost intercepted, and spikes hit Chandler just as it hit ground.

He'll get $21k, I think.

Whether it was a cheap shot is semantics. He hit him too high, we're lucky no penalty was called, hopefully Chandler wasn't concussed.

Want to see Spikes keep making these kinds of hits, just stay away from the head, especially when that's more easily done, as was the case on this play, imo.

Waiting for Wilfork to be fined on the absolute pummeling of that Bills WR that put him dazed into the locker room

That's on Fitzpatrick for putting his WR in that position. How often do you see that happen to Patriots' wide receivers? Rarely, because it is not often that Brady throws it high over the middle where they have to stretch out or leaves his WR 'out to dry' where they get abused. A good QB allows his WR to catch it, get YAC and not get posterized even if going over the middle....

INT returns are still a bit of a free-for-all. He may be fined, but I'm not at all surprised that it didn't get called. It seems like anything goes as long as it's not a block in the back.

The key word here is "launch", and that's clearly what Spikes did. He led with his his head and "launched". I'm one of the leaders in compaining about the whoooosssification of football, BUT THAT's a play that needed to be called. You can't use the top of your helmet as a weapon and you can't launch at another players head. Its not only the rule its not good football. (just as Brandon Merriweather)

Care to show me the rule? The launching rule protects "defenseless receivers" and hits to the head only protect the QB in the pocket. So unless there was a rule change I missed, he technically didn't do anything wrong.

Here is the rule:

Rule 12, Section 2, Article 8:

(i) if a player illegally launches into a defenseless opponent. It is an illegal launch if a playyer (1) leaves both feet prior to contact to spring forward and upward into his opponent, and (2) uses any part of his helmet (including the top/crown and forehead/"hairline" parts) to initiate forcible contact against any part of his opponent's body.

I guess it depends if they consider Chandler "defenseless" or not.

Chandler can't be defenseless anymore. It's an INT, he's the defender now.

No way that would happen. Wilfork's head hit the ball (they showed it happen in slow motion from a good angle). This is what dislodged the ball and made the fumble happen. I can't see a fine coming for this when there was no helmet contact.

Regarding Spikes, he will probably get fined. It was no where near the textbook display Wilfork put on. Still, a brutal, game-changing hit! #POWWWW

He could only be deemed defenseless if defenseless inbcludes not paying attention.
Sadly, injury = fine now.

He isn't defenceless in my eyes but you're asking or a fine when you leave your feet and launch at someone anywhere from the neck up. I loved the hit but knew straight away that would draw a FedEx from NY!

Definitely a fine. No arguments but hell, lets see more of that!

The launching rule protects "defenseless receivers" and hits to the head only protect the QB in the pocket. So unless there was a rule change I missed, he technically didn't do anything wrong.

That rule was expanded in 2010 as a "point of emphasis" to apply to all players on the football field, not just receivers. First, it was just illegal, but not called uniformly. Then, it became a point of emphasis to call it on hits against defenseless receivers. Finally, it was reapplied to everybody.

The unnecessary roughness rule you posted a small excerpt of applies to all players on the football field, not just those who are receivers or considered defenseless players. Those are just points of emphasis added to the rule. Striking an opponent with your helmet is "spearing," which has been illegal for a long, long time, and which is described as illegal in subsection (f), "Impermissible Use of the Helmet and Facemask." It carries the same fines as Illegal Launching, the part of the rule you quoted.

The whole unnecessary roughness rule has been unnecessarily padded with all these redundant and overlapping subsections because the NFL wants (a) to look very serious about preventing helmet hits and concussions in particular and (b) doesn't want anybody to skip over a more concise or clear formulation of the rule as "not important" when skimming the rulebook.

will have to look at the replay. but if it is anyway similar to warren sapp's hit from a few years that injured an OL on a turnover then there will be a big fine.

to person earlier in thread, ed reed did get fined for his hit on branch.

we need a nickname for Spikes...
I've just taken to calling him The Thumper. The two thumps on Spiller and Jackson creating two forced fumble recoveries for the Patriots reinforced that notion for me.
