I think Asante will get his money one way or the other...Love for him to stay, but I think he will be wearing a different team logo...Hopefully it will be in the nfc...REDSKINS.....I think earn the right to get paid....He done his contract...I know this is a business....Smart move is tag & trade....Maybe this won't have to happen.....olive branch, good will ,but truly don't think it is going to work this way....Please no MEION DRAMA!!!

The Skins are starting to sour on Portis. Why no franchise Asante and trade him for Portis? Cut Dillon, and then draft a CB at & 24. Resign Mickens & Poteat or another FA. Draft a FS or let Sanders stay at FS and put Geno at CB.

I hope for your sake this was one gigantic sarcastic post. Because you lost me at Portis.

I get it,like a reverse Champ Bailey trade. I'm sure Wahsington fans would love this trade as long as we sent our 2 1st rounders with it.

First, my answer is YES as it would be a one year deal.

Second, Franchising isn't about the money, it's about the control. He wouldn't sign it until he had to . . . meanwhile we'd try to re-sign him, trade him or could rescind the tag if it were unsigned.

We cannot let him walk for a 2008 comp pick.

I totally agree

Samuel has been tackilng very well so you have had the wrong player the last 8 games.

Belichick seemed very comfortable with late in the season so who knows what actually is going on.

Samuel has been tackling well? REALLY? That's funny because I saw Maurice Jones Drew shrug him off like he wasn't even there. I watch Samuel HIT people well, but not TACKLE.

It would seem you have the wrong player the last 8 games.

How can you alibi interceptions based on pressuring the qb? Does that mean other db's who had five interceptions for the year were just as good. I would franchise him in a heartbeat.

I think that you didn't mean to use the word alibi there because it doesn't make sense.

Now, if you watch Champ Bailey, many of his ints he goes up and out battles the WR for them. Samuel just doesn't do that in my opinion. A healthy Randall Gay would have made those 5 interceptions no problem

And no, it doesn't mean that other DBs who had 5 interceptions this year are just as good. You have to look at how they got theiere they just floaters because of tips or pressure on the QB or did the DB actually go up and get the ball.

I wouldn't do it. With those two first rounders we could trade up for a Calvin Johnson or Dwayne Jarrett and then pick up a good looking cornerback (either by trade for a veteran or a rookie). More things need to be addressed than the running back position and I haven't heard anything on Corey retiring.

And 3rds are very rare it could be a 4th.

I don't believe for a moment that we'd get less than a 2007 #2 for him if F&Ted. Why not take it ?

Or my preference, trade him for a 2008 #1. With a full year putting Samuel on the credit card, interest free, some team would undoubtedly do that.

3rds are not that rare. And, considering its based on the avg. yearly cap hit of the contract, I can easily see it surpassing the 6 million avg per year and that is a guaranteed 3rd round pick.

Oh great! Let's rely on a rookie cornerback in the 2007 NFL Playoffs.

This team doesn't seem to be able to coach up rookies for full time play very well. Paying a premium for some continuity may be the way to go here.

Well what do you think it would take to get Calvin Johnson? Supposedly our #24+#28 can get us up to #8. Add in our #56 and maybe you can get Johnson. How in the world are you going to get a good looking CB in the 3rd round that can start? Jarrett may be available for the #24+#28, but no way he is worth that for us. You did not address LB which seems like it must not be overlooked. Any great LB in FA will have a franchise tage so there goes more pics, most likely round 1.

You say that more things need to be addressed than RB, but then put out a plan that addresses much less. I threw Portis out there in sarcasm, but that would be a better plan that what you presented because at least we would still have all our draft picks and the ability to fill holes. With your big WR you are only able to fill 1 hole with a great player instead of filling many hole with quality players. It doesnt make sense to me. FYI, I said cut Dillon for Portis room, not him retire.

I was not convinced that #22 could be worth all that money at the beginning of the season, however he has convinced me that is a #1 CB. With that being said, 7.79 Million is not a good number for this team, I do not see them franchising him for that cap hit. It will also thrown out the whole back 7's salary structure, if he were to come around for a more cap friendly number it is a possibility.. but bottom line do not see him here next year.. he wants his payday, let him go to some team who will not know how to use him and then he can play golf in January.

7.79 for one year when the team has an obvious need, and the team retains the option to trade him for a 2008 #1 and maybe another pick? oh, and the team has a lot of cap room to play with.

yes please.

*edit* I unfortunately couldn't vote in the poll because the "YES" option had an attachment about Asante being an elite CB. I can't go there. Tag him in a heartbeat, but he isn't elite.

Yes, to let him walk away in his prime would be stupid...

Samuel is good, not great.

His tattoo and agent are obnoxious. But if you are franchising-to-trade, it does not matter if he is sulky, as long as you get the deal done pre-season.

If you are waiting for the season to get the trade done, it is still a feasible alternative, assuming Samuel is aware he is auditioning for other clubs.

One final point in favor of franchising in my mind:

The franchise tag is always a trailing indicator, derived for the most part from previous years' best deals.

There may be aberrations, in which the best 5 salaries for a position have all just gotten negotiated prior to your franchising a player, but for the most part these numbers represent an "older" reality.

Therefore, the franchise tag becomes a relative bargain in periods of rapid cap inflation, such as we entered last year, and is continuing this year and next year. During this period, it's predictable that our franchise "dollars" will be eroded by inflation, and we will seem to be paying less for our franchisee, relative to other positions on the team, and relative to the cost of a franchisee in an earlier year (say, a year with $3M cap growth as opposed to the $7M cap growth we'll see in both 2007 and 2008, following the roughly $20M cap growth we saw in 2006.)

I do not know how the terms of the CBA affect the "out years." If this level of inflation continues, it militates toward a view of the franchise tag as attractive (since, once again, it is a trailing indicator.)

Pay somebody!

Is Asante worth this much money? Of course he isn't. Should we tag

him as a franchise player? Of course we should. The reason that I

contradict myself is that the Pats have no good alternative. We have

no young hopeful on our roster and free agency has only two good

cornerbacks. If we can't afford Asante then it follows that we can't

afford Nate Clements either. The last time that we obtained good

cornerbacks in the draft was 2003 when we obtained Asante and

Eugene Wilson.

Franchise him. See what he does next year.

I say he is, not only because he's a good player but also because of his exp in our system. Beats playing someone else the same money or a little bit less but having to deal with the growing pains. The AFCC game showed us just how much we lack depth in our secondary, in my opinion getting rid of the 2nd best player we have back there (Rodney being the best, but he may not have much if any left in the career tank) would mean we'd probably be in rebuilding mode for a couple of years. I think that would be a bad thing as Tom is 29 now, and although that's still young it can get old in a hurry.

So like I say while he may not be elite A La Ty Law in his prime I think his experience in our system makes him more valuable than someone with equal or even a little more talent from the outside.

In theory that he won't sit out after being franchised, yes, he's worth that amount for a year. But in all likelihood, he would hold out and create a messy situation, necessitating the need to trade him.

How in the world are you going to get a good looking CB in the 3rd round that can start?

Wasn't Asante a 4th? Didn't he start (well at that) his rookie year?

IMO, Asante is a top CB, young and still improving. He is worth 7 mil a year. That being said, if we get a good trade offer (at least one 1st rounder) after we franchise him (because it will happen) then we should take it. We still have Hobbs, Wilson returning from injury and Sanders in the secondary. I'd be comfortable with that and a bargain #2 CB. We also have Randal Gay returning from injury to play the slot.
