Panthers | Davidson hired as offensive coordinator
Tue, 23 Jan 2007 18:48:12 -0800

Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports the Carolina Panthers have hired Jeff Davidson to be the team's next offensive coordinator, according to the Charlotte News and Observer.. Davidson was the assistant head coach and offensive line coach for the Cleveland Browns in 2006.

Davidson was the Pats' tight ends/assistant offensive line coach from 2002-4 before following Romeo to Cleveland.

WOW. That is a big surprise. I had him pegged as the next OC for the Browns. Also very interesting because Davidson was the Browns Asst. Head Coach / O-line coach the way Dante is for the Pats.

This guy should have been our coordinator after Weiss left.

Will this never let up ? If Belichick thinks McDaniels isn't doing a good job he will replace him. He worked with both Davidson and McDaniels and picked McDaniels.

But as he's posting on a message board and you're going to the hall of fame, I guess we'll stand back and salute your opinion.

Truer words have never been said. Like I told NEM, McDaniels doesn't work in a vacuum. Condemn him, and you're condemning BB.

really? why?
what exactly did he do so splendidly with the Browns?
His name wasn't Josh McDaniels, that's why everyone thinks he would have been a great choice.

Actually, are you sure that Belichick picked McDaniels over Davidson? Remember, it was Davidson who left the organization to go to the Browns with Crennel. Davidon could have made the decision that he didn't want to be the one calling the plays without the title of OC, the way that McDaniels was the 1st year.

It was fairly clear how it went, that we picked McDaniels over him. He was only the OL coach in Cleveland - even though he went to Ohio State, if Belichick wanted Davidson as de facto OC, he would certainly have taken that over remaining a position coach.

Are you so sure about that? Davidson was more than just a position coach for the Browns. He worked himseld into the position of Asst. Head Coach. Which tends to have more weight than just an OC. Don't you think?

Yeah, the first year he was the OL coach. After that he became OL coach/AHC - they added the "on paper" promotion to encourage him not to go with Mangini to the Jets. Then in the middle of this past year he replaced Carthon as the OC. But he was just the OL coach his first year.

That is a huge assumption based on information that you don't have.

The part about Davidson ? Not really. There was a lot of speculation that Davidson might replace Weiss. McDaniels was selected. Davidson left. In that order. It's substantial evidence, combined with "why would Davidson want to be the OL coach for Cleveland over de facto OC with New England ?".

I can't prove it but it's fairly clear.

But I can say FOR SURE that if Belichick isn't happy with McDaniels that he'll replace him. And that he was happy with McDaniels last year because he gave him the official title.

Exactly. This isn't a democracy. There is one voter and his initials are BB.

NEM's disciples won't let go either.

Davidson wanted the OC and BB chose JM. To protect him and defuse criticisms from the NEMites and Borges of the world, but mostly to let Josh fail if he was too young, he didn't make it official. That in itself was a high praise, as it implies BB had a great expectations of his future. Davidson saw the handwriting on the wall and left. The same happened after BB chose Eric Mangini as DC. Rob Ryan lost out and headed off to the Raiders as DC, where he has done a fine job.

I was actually surprised that Belichick let Davidson go when Crennel left. Davidson was the interim OC when Weis was recovering from gastric bypass surgery. I figured that was putting him on the fast track for Charlie's replacement. Belichick chose to go with McDaniels.

I think that just shows you how much faith he has in McDaniels. He didn't name him OC right away to grow him into the role, but I think Belichick is happy with the overall job he is doing. If he didn't he would have made a move probably trying to bring Davidson back.

And all this time we could have had Davidson sucks threads instead of McDaniels sucks threads. Look what we have been missing.

Actually no, we may be congratulating ourselves for 5 titles in 6 years...

(kinda of joking, but not really)

They are ripping the pick here in Charlotte on the talk radio. Nobody thinks he will do much.
What people don't realize is that Fox wants a conserative offense and still runs the show so they won't open up much on offense next year.
The Panthers were the most Under achievers this year in the NFL.
