If you had to list your top 3 to 5 wishes for this offseason what would they be? I was thinking along the lines of general discussion more than specific details, for example, solidify secondary as opposed to sign Assante.

1. Get younger and deeper on D.
2. Surround our QB with effective help on offense.
3. Use cap money. If we are saving up for something nice.....how about a LB.

1. Improve the running game (it went missing down the stretch). ie Release Dillon and find a power back to replace him.

2. Draft some DB youth (safety if Assante is kept).

3. Find some three and four-year guys to bring into our 3 - 4 setup at LB.

These are very general observations and would likely change on the fly, once pieces started falling into place (or out of place).

1. Shore up the secondary

2. Get younger and faster at linebacker

3. Find a true #1 receiver (I think a strong #1 combined with Gaffney, Caldwell & Jackson, plus one more decent reciever assuming Troy Brown retires, could be pretty good...)

4. Find out what happened to Laurence Maroney and shore up here, if necessary

5. Egg Bobby Wade's house

1-Speed/Youth on defense..mostly LB
2-Improved running game
3- true #1 WR for Brady

4- Lifetime BB contract
5- another SB

Two impact free agents less than 30 years old or re-sign Daniel

Graham and Asante Samuel.

A guy who can cover someone as a LB (Donnie Edwards?)

Some young guys at LB and S to start backfilling for the old guard at those spots

Another CB, two if Asante leaves

WR help

donnie edwards could be a good choice.

who does everyone think the pats will get for brady as a true #1 recv'r?

the only place i see is in the draft and we all know most wr's in the first round breakdown or are not impact their first year.

i think they'd be better served going def on first two picks then wr in 2nd round or even 3rd round.

they need to stack the defense and sign a stallworth or preferably bobby engram. there is not much out there for wr's in free agency.

1) Re-sign Asante. I think our secondary is fine, filled with youth and depth

2) Get some fresh legs for the LBs. This is a 2 step process, a wiley vet is needed to fill a regular role for the next 2-3 years, and an early round pick should be spent on a future starter.

3) Get a small, speedy, quick off the snap WR to help open up the passing game.

I don't know WHO but most will agree we lacked in the passing game this year. Losing Branch hurt but nobody wants to see us and Brady go throught this again.
We can address LB/DB with the 2 first rounders but after that imo we need to get a little more support for Brady. We need to have better WR's than this year.Maybe C.J will help, who knows.

absolutely agree with #3 and this they may be able to find in the lower rounds, a productive but undersized wideout or what about a 3rd down back to groom behind faulk?

Resign Assante, but at a reasonable price

Resign Graham at a reasonable price

inquire about Randy Moss, but no more than a 2 for him..

Get younger and faster at LB...

1. Sign Duce Staley to replace Dillon
2. Re-sign Asante Samuel
3. Get some LB's in free-agency, maybe Scott Shanle or Jamie Sharper?

As far as the draft is concerned, I trust the Pats will have a great draft as always, and will pick the right players.

1) a lifetime BB contract??? YEAH. Make that #1-12,992.

12,993) Incrementally improve running game through coaching, especially Maroney's "Dance moves". Dillon stays; his longevity has been extended through Maroney. These 2 backs combined for 19 TDs on the ground and somewhere in the neighborhood of 1600 yards. It ain't broke. Don't fix it.

12,994) You want a "True #1" WR? Define your terms. I do not want a star receiver, but I would not shy away from a decent free agent pickup, along the lines of what Mason or Javon Walker might have brought last year. Beyond that, expect WR talent to emerge through modest pickups like Caldwell and Gaffney, and through the draft. (Chad's not dead yet.)

12,995) LB: address for value/value over time. Yes, the younger the better; but I'm another Donnie Edwards fan for 07. I wouldn't weep if we made a run at Adalius Thomas either. Camp is for competition -- if we end up with Tedy coming back and rotating in but not starting, I could very much get behind that.

12,996) Also LB: Use some ducats to get Colvin done/restructured for the "out years." His contract year is 2008 (UFA in 2009). Now the hip issue is out of the way, he's starting to pay off somewhere in line with his contract, but his cap hit goes north of $7M that same year. I can see us getting ahead of this in this coming year, though realistically it's a 2008 concern (I hear the Pats do not like a player to skip the highly productive "contract year -" still, I'm starting to be satisfied that Rosie is worth hooking into, as opposed to a high risk high/reward "prospect.")

12,997) DBs: continue to build a deep, capable unit that contributes its part. Per Pats' overall strategy, do not overpay at marquee positions like CB, rather, have a high number of capable CBs in preparation for the (inevitable?) injuries. It might also be time to start looking for a very nasty safety a la Rodney who can punish receivers underneath and come up big in run support.

12,998) WE NEED MORE TIGHT ENDS!!!!

Of course, my #1 item (combined with Pioli staying) covers another assumption I am making here, which is that we continue to exercise cap discipline, eschew big names (preferring to make small names bigger during their stay in NE,) and draft/ply the FA waters based on value over immediate perceived need.

Wish list for the 2007 NFL season:

1. Place Franchise Tag on Asante Samuel
2. Beg Troy Brown to sign for another season
3. Cut worthless defensive end Marquise Hill (waste of a roster spot)
4. Allot only six defensive lineman on the 53 man roster (at least one on the eight man practice squad)
5. Allot ten linebackers on the 53 man roster

As for the New England Patriots 2007 draft:

1st Round (from Seattle): Safety Reggie Nelson (Florida) or Linebacker Patrick Willis (Mississippi)
1st Round: Wide Receiver Dwayne Bowe (LSU) or Wide Receiver Robert Meachem (Tennessee)
2nd Round: Linebacker David Harris (Michigan) or Linebacker Buster Davis (FSU)
3rd Round: Cornerback Fred Bennett (South Carolina) or Cornerback David Irons (Auburn)
4th Round: Linebacker Stewart Bradley (Nebraska) or Safety C.J. Gaddis (Clemson)
5th Round: Traded to the Oakland Raiders for wide receiver Doug Gabriel
6th Round: Safety Brandon Mitchell (Ohio State) or Safety Jessie Daniels (LSU) or Cornerback Reggie Lewis (Florida)
7th Round: Linebacker Anthony Waters (Clemson) or Linebacker Zak DeOssie (Brown)

Wish list for the 2007 NFL season:

How 'bout trading him instead? He's (apparently) worthless to the Pats--that doesn't mean he couldn't be useful somewhere else. [As people said half jokingly, Matt Cassel could well have been the second best QB in the country his senior year.]

1. Lance Briggs, I know he's gonna cost a boat load, but he is worth it.
2. Bring back Asante, I don't think he's as great as some of you, mainly a product of a great system, but still an excellent corner.
3. WR, whatever it takes, free agency, trade, draft, just get some talent.
4. Draft Brian Leonard, the FB from Rutgers. The guy does everything well, excellent runner, pass receiver, and blitz pick-up. Not the best blocker, but who cares we rarely use our FB to block anyways.
5. Draft Michael Griffin, an elite prospect who is not getting enough props from the scouts. Lord knows I screamed for us to get Ed Reid, but it didn't materialize. Maybe the Pats should hire me, lol, not seriously!!!!

-Franchise Asante
-Sign Lance Briggs
-Re-sign Banta-Cain to be a backup OLB and to come in on passing downs
-Draft Patrick Willis, Levi Brown, Brian Leonard and Rhema McKnight in the first 3 rounds, if they are available of course
-rest of the draft get some DB's (A.J Davis, Josh Gattis) and maybe a QB (John Beck)
-Try to get Brown and Bruschi back for 1 more year
-Id like to see Graham come back, but he wouldnt be my top priority

Maybe the Patriots could trade Marquise Hill for another bust as was the case with Bethel Johnson for Johnathan Sullivan.

1. Lance Briggs
2.Resign Asante and Graham
3.Draft/Trade/Sign --- Skilled Small Quick Receiver..
4.Draft/Trade/Sign --- ILB and better depth at OLB
5.Groom Garett Mills into the Dallas Clarke type of weapon for brady..
6. Don't Make Watson the Main Target for most of the season again,Please, We are expecting him to be the next coming of Tony Gonzales overnight, it won't happen so fast...utilize him for his physical presence, for now, qucik throws and let him bowl over defenders down field...and when the coverage is right use his speed..
7.Address The Safety issues..(age, replacements,etc.)
8. Post Polian's comments in every single locker...

1: Dump Josh McDaniels
3A: Dump Josh Mcdaniels
5A: Dump Josh McDaniels
7A: Dump Josh McDaniels
10: Dump Josh McDaniels.
Nothing like a recurring theme?
