Most painful sporting event ever?

Aside from sporting defeats in your own personal athletics, was this the most painful loss for you?

Simply as a spectator, yes, this for me was the most painful thing I've ever watched. I was too young to remember Buckner, so it's only competition is the 03 ALCS. And as horrendous as that was, with the Red Sox, losing is the norm, and no matter what, part of you always expects the Sox to find a way to lose.

With the Brady-Belichick Pats, it's quite the opposite. In the case of the Sox, they redeemed their 03 loss the ensuing year - the goal for any Sox fan was to break the curse, win one, and die happy. As a Pats fan in this era, it's about making history. Nothing the Pats can ever do can give them this one ring that slipped out of their fingers.

This one will sting for a while.

The game in Oakland when it was taken away from us by that bogus roughing call on Sugar bear. That would have been our first SB Championship.

I just can't think about the specifics of this game.

If I think "we lost to the Colts in the AFC Championship game after a great season in which we exceeded expectations while managing to build for the future", then yes, I take solace in that long-winded fact. I can rationalize it.

But if I think of anything that took place from the moment Troy Brown was called for offensive PI, it makes me want to vomit all over everything.

As a lifelong Pats fan... I rated the worst playoff loss like this

1 At Denver last yr

2 At Denver 1986

3 At Pitt 1997

After this Sunday , those losses will never touch the one on sunday.. Its the worse loss in Pats history.. I know the super bowls were bad, but lets face it Chicago was the better team, and the game against Green Bay hurt, but I thought we would be back very soon.. Its not the loss, its how we lost.. just very unPatriot like..

If the Pats had a history of losing and then put up that kind of show, I'd compare it to Game 6, but the recent Lombardis definitely mute the pain. Also, despite giving up the largest lead in AFCCG history, the Pats gave up a 21 point lead in the same place 3 years ago and barely held on for victory. The difference between that game and Sunday's game is making/not making one lousy play so in essence we've almost seen the exact same game twice in three years.

The 2003 ALCS loss was muted by the fact that Grady gave that game away and there already was a history of losing in spectacular fashion thanks to the boys of 1986.

I'd list them as: Game 6 >>>> 2003 ALCS > AFCCG loss

Honorable mention to:

- Celts lose game 6 (and title) at home in 1985 to LA
- Celts lose game 7 at home to Sixers in 1982 ECF
- Pats lose SB20 in embarassing fashion

I wasn't a hockey fan, but I can imagine "too many men on the ice" in 1979 must have been painful to live through.

Pedro game 2003 ( although the Patriots OT win at Miami just days later saved us a long winter of pain, in fact the Patriots never lost again and won a Super Bowl. HOW can we not love a team like THAT)

For me, this one wasn't as bad as losing to Denver last year. Last year I thought the Pats deserved to win. This year the Pats gave it everything they had and came up short. I can live with that a lot easier.

for me its the 1986 ws then the 1985 series loss to the lakers the 1978 and 79 series losses to the montreal canadians in the semi finals both years the 1976 loss to the raiders in the playoffs that team was superbowl bound for sure .there are others but those stand out for me.

other Patriot losses that got me more upset, again, because at the time they had never won a Super Bowl and these losses made it feel like they never would:

1976: Playoff at Oakland
1978: Playoff vs Houston
1979: A loss at the Jets that meant no playoffs
1980: the MNF game at Miami when John Smiths FG was blocked and John Lennon was killed. An AWFUL night.
1984: A game at Denver, i think the Patriots were 7-3 and driving for the winning field goal when Mosi Tatupu fumbled, and the Broncos ran it back for a TD that won the game.
1985: MNF game at Mami that would have clinched the division. A 30-27 loss.
1988: A chance to make the playoffs with a win at Denver and Berry started Eason instead of Flutie
1996: The SB loss. The feeling of betrayal finding out Parcells head was in NY the whole time
1997: Bledsoe blowing the game vs the Steelers at Foxboro that cost them a bye
1997: the 7-6 playoff loss at Pittsburgh. Maybe the worst loss ever


these all hurt worse because now there are 3 Championships behind us and hope for more.

In 1988 the Bruins had the best record in Hockey yet got swept out of the finals. In game 4 the Garden's lights went out and forced a cancellation of the game. So not only did we lose, we came off like a bunch of dorks that couldn't even keep the lights on. This one is maybe in my top five. Sunday wasn't even close. I felt like our team went down in a blaze of glory and will rise again very soon. Heck I remember when a certain un-named, undersized, rookie DE stripped Bledsoe in the post season to secure a one point win for his team. That one hurt a lot more. I still remember Bledsoe babbling on after the game: 'gosh golly gee! I was sure we were gonna march right down the field there!!' while all of New England looked at him like he had three heads.

Yes, it was. I am to young to of suffored larger losses.

Sports really are first for children, and then the children in all of us. As an adult, Sports viewing is a hobby, and victory and defeat can't compare with the true ups and downs of real life. Nothing will ever touch the Celtics loss to the Lakers on the baby hook and the Buckner play. Those were the killers of my youth. I imagine young kids today will be scarred emotionally by this Patriot loss, but in the long run it will endear the team to the next generation even more.
