A great article about the SNF game

And this doesn't even cover the non-calls like Lewis tackling Gronk or holding on Chandler Jones. The only one from this article I debate is the false start on Yanda. Normally yes, the reaction to the offsides would be called encroachment, but Wilfork had been back onsides for like 2 seconds before Yanda moved. Even if the letter of the law says encroachment, don't reward that dink for his games :p

Thanks for that.

I think one of the biggest calls, was the pass interference on Mayo in the 2nd. That seemed to give the Ravens life, and got them back in the game. If we stop them there we get the ball back in good field position with a good chance to go up 16 or 20 zip. Huge call.

awesome read!

analysis of 24 calls:

12 valid (10 on Ravens, 2 on Pats)
5 inconclusive (2 on Ravens, 3 on Pats)
7 WRONG (2 on Ravens, 5 on Pats)

so 5 of 10 calls against us were clearly bogus and (4 of them possibly affected the scoreboard since they were on a scoring drive)
vs.
2 of 14 calls vs. them being clearly bogus (neither affected scoring)

I certainly disagree that the call on Harbaugh was bogus though.

The biggest call. The Ravens hadn't even got a first down in the game at that point. That's what got them going.

Great article! Really well done.

Thanks for this. That game left a weird taste in my mouth, I felt like we had gotten the raw end of the deal, but because I'd also seen a couple of rough calls for the Ravens just figured it was my bias towards the Pats. This shows the calls were onesided (the Ravens getting penalized for legitimate penalties is called the refs doing their job), and as said doesn't even include the non calls of Edelpunch, Edelhelmet in the endzone, about 75 Chandler Jones holdings (Chris Collingsworth actually praised Michael Oher once while he blatantly horse-collaring #95), and the indecisive field goal.

While at the time I wanted Bill to go out there and call for the refs' heads, I'm glad they've taken what was a very similar incident to Monday night's game in much better stride than the Packers. The Packers have a right to be pissed and I don't blame Aaron Rodgers for speaking his mind, but did anyone else notice the most vocal and outspoken idividuals were the OL (aka the part of the team that had nothing to do with the play and had a horrible night without the refs getting involved)?

Initially i also thought the Harbaugh call was harsh. During the following intermission, the C4 (in the UK) analyst Mike Carlson commented that he thought the call was well merited.
At first Harbaugh was telling the ref that he "... wanted to talk to him..." and afterwards mouthed that he wants to call a timeout. Carlson was of the opinion that if Harbaugh wanted to call timeout then all he had to do was gesture with his hands and call timeout. His initial intention, he argued, was to berate the ref for the previous on-field decision by the refs.

The call doesn't matter now but just goes to show how different people can interpret the same event in conflicting ways.

i wouldn't be surprised if one of the refs were paid off.

It was THAT bad.

That was the 3rd of 3 consecutive penalties that likely kept points off the board for the Pats and put points on the board for the Ravens. Without those calls it's very likely the Pats are up 17-0, with the ball in good field position, and having dominated the TOP. You can say what you want about overcoming the calls, but it's quite likely that game was going to be heading towards a blowout halfway through the 2nd quarter if it was officiated competently.

Absolutely, it shifted the momentum big time, who knows how big of lead we have if its called right, Im not even going to get into the non calls but those affected the game too.

People don't realize why Ngata got the personal foul.

It wasn't for falling on Brady. There was no call there. It wasn't for fighting with Mankins, because if that had been called, Mankins would have been called too, because they were both at fault there.

Instead, Ngata was separated from Mankins, and while he was away from the play, with the ref looking right at him, Ngata headbutted Connolly.

That's why he got the personal foul.

Good read..... I agree pretty much with his findings on the penalties (including McCourty's). Overall, you can see the trend that while the Ravens were penalized more, they had the overall benefit of the calls. Credit them, their plan was to be overly aggressive knowing the replacements refs were in way over their head and would likely not get it right.

They were correct, it caused the refs to compensate and over-call penalties that were not there on the Patriots side. Also, their aggressive style also allowed for the Ravens to get away with quite a bit of holding and other stuff that did not get called. The Ravens set up refs perfectly to screw this game up in their favor, just in their style of play.

Bottom line - Patriots got hosed. Sure, they could/should have won the game anyway, but that doesn't negate the fact that they got hosed overall.

There was a mixed blessing in this game though.

The Rats lost Revis for the season, the Bills lost Spiller, presumably, for a few games, Reggie Bush was injured and had to leave the game......

But the Pats played against the Ravens and Bernard Pollard in a physical game in Baltimore, and didn't suffer any major injuries.

He should have been ejected too if he headbutted someone.

EDIT:

How about some delusion?

The officiating was horrible in every game I watched yesterday. In our game, it was atrocious as well. Both teams were helped and hurt by it, but I still think the Ravens got the worst of it. I know that some will point out the pair of "phantom" holds on the Pats as being key, but I've watched both replays, and I think that while they could have not thrown flags, there definitely were holds. The first one, on a 2nd and 14, Torrey Smith has his facemask grabbed and pulled down at the five yard mark, and it also appears that McCourty has his hand on his back, maybe grabbing some jersey as the ball sails past. Not sure which part of it, or both, they were calling, but a flag should have been thrown for the facemask grab for sure. The other one, where Pitta is held coming off the LOS, was legit too. You are allowed contact, but you're not allowed to hold, which is what took place. Maybe the regular refs don't throw the flags, but IMO I think they would have. Other than those two calls, it seemed to me that the Ravens were getting the brunt of the bad calls, especially that hit Reed put on Branch. At first it looked like a good call, but seeing the replay, that was a textbook clean hit, despite it's violence.

and lets not forget the personal foul that was never called when Edelman was slapped three times in the head.

What this article doesn't mention about the PI penalty on Mayo is that it wasn't a blown judgement call, but a situation in which the replacement refs didn't know/understand the rules.

The official called pass interference, and awarded the Ravens 2 yards and an automatic first down.

The problem is, there is no such thing as a 2-yard pass interference penalty, as the defensive player is allowed to make continuous contact with the receiver within 5 yards of the LOS, including when the ball is in the air.

A penalty is only called when the defensive player's contact meets the requirements for holding. Clearly the official didn't think it did, or he would have called holding, as the 5 yard penalty would supersede the (impossible) 2 yard interference penalty.

I've moved on past this game and accepted this loss, but I cant help but share it. Its a great article that breaks down all of the penalties in the game and the results may surprise you.

Breaking Down the Officiating in New England Patriots Loss to Baltimore Ravens | Bleacher Report

Discuss thoughts below.

Bad calls were made against both teams... the thing that hurt the most is first the one against Mayo after we had stopped them.. that was just good coverage and there was no holding and he didn't get there to early, rice also initiates contact with his arm. This penalty extends their drive and leads to a TD (7 points).

McCourty's defensive holding, good D from him, breaks up the long ball. Gets called for holding and never holds him this turns 3-14 into a 1st down for the ravens result (7 points)

Spikes Defensive holding. Great Jam by Spikes, gets called for DH while Jones makes a great play and gets the Sack which would have led to only 3 points, next play is a ravens TD (4 points 7 if the FG is missed).

That is 18-21 points that these calls let happen. Only arguable one is the DMC DH call which would have made it 3-14 so there is a possibility they get it but not a large one.

I think thats why there has been such an uproar by us as pats fans, our D steps up and makes some good plays to stop drives... those good plays are taken away from us leading to extended drives and points. If Mayo's penalty isn't called... thats what 3-4 3 and outs for the ravens in a row? instead they start to get momentum. Spikes penalty isn't called D comes up big in a situation we really needed them to... another 4 points wiped off the board.

I am over the game but i won't lie... when it's broken down like this it's very frustrating.

Nothing surprising from this article. And I still haven't seen anyone identify a specific bas call that went against the Ravens.

It is very frustrating. But on the bright side, if we face the Ravens again but with the normal officials, I'm VERY confident in our team.

I agree that there were bad calls on both teams, but the Patriots got those "game changing calls" more than the Ravens. DMc was alright and pass rush was too imo if it wasn't for those Baltimore Replacement Refs smh oh and that game winning FG :/
