The NFL will announce a fine for New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick later Wednesday, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Belichick grabbed an official shortly after the Baltimore Ravens kicked a game-winning field goal Sunday that passed over the top of the right upright.

Belichick said that he was trying to get the official's attention to get an explaination regarding the narrowly made field goal attempt.

Perhaps the coaches ought to levy a fine against that moron Goodell, or perhaps sue him for failing to do his job.

The Commissioner is charged with overseeing all football operations in the league, resolving disputes and ensuring a quality product. To date, he has failed in his job. If he cannot, or will not, do his job to the acceptable standards, then he needs to be replaced by someone who will.

If you don't like the refereeing situation, put the blame where it actually belongs. If the owners actually wanted the refs back, they'd be back tomorrow.

No kidding. And multiple reports from Mark Maske and judy Battista indicate that the owners are dug in and not interested in compromising any further with these guys. I'm sure the owners have fully analyzed the enemy and they know how many of the members can afford to lose more than half a seasons worth of income in what is a second or early retirement job for most of them. Ed Hoculi's firm is usually carrying a triple digit case load. Some of the younger guys are looking at half their income or more evaporating. A lot like the elite players vs. rank and file concerns. And for every 55 and over vet there is a guy just approaching 5+ years in the league who wants to be here for another 15 whether he has to live with a 401K benefit in 20 years or even retire from his regular employment in a decade to become a full time 6 figure NFL official

These owners who were determined not to cede control over their business model to 2000 athletes and their representation are not about to cede control over their business model to 120 guys who look and at times also perform like footlocker employees. No matter how badly a media that just once more longs to see some individual, group or court best them at their own game.

At the same time, the officials should not be ignoring coaches who have questions about rules. I read somewhere along the line this week that the league told the officials to ignore the coaches and players because there was so much baiting and gaming going on. But there has to still be some dialogue.

I'll also be interested to see how BB's fine compares to Kyle Shanahan's ($25k). In my view, what he did was much more aggressive and hostile.

You can tell by his body language and how quickly he pulled his hand away that he knew it was a mistake. Belichick as well as the team and all of the fans are lucky that it was only a fine. With Goodell, I thought for sure it would be a suspension.

Bedard made a good point about this today on D&C. He was saying that this might be the last week the owners will give the refs to get anything done. After this they will just hold out until after Thanksgiving, fire the regular refs and then hire Div I and others to replace current replacements that aren't up to snuff. Hopefully they can come to agreement this week and avoid this mess.

There shouldn't be a fine. Belichick did what he should have done to get the ref's attention, the ref had no business running off of the field without explaining their decision to end the game without review.


A multi billion dollar business is now fully in the hands of people who are completely incompetent, it's a disgrace and the NFL office and owners are completely responsible for the situation. If they decided to go this route they should have fired all the ref's after the Super Bowl and hired and trained their replacements long ago. Kraft should reimburse Belichick fully for any fine.

As far as the refs go I disagree with their position, part time employees should not get pensions and the league should go to full time refs as soon as possible.

I think the difference was that there was no video of Harbaugh bumping the official.

I think the distinction is Harbaugh's was judged to be inadvertent. Whether that conclusion is based on what Harbaugh said, what the ref said, both, or some video that we haven't seen (if it exists), who knows?

Bill had a valid reason to want to talk to the ref, but you cannot say that grabbing an arm is somehow not intentional. You can say that it wasn't meant in anger, was is the heat of the moment, and wasn't meant to intimidate, but can't argue that it was completely inadvertent.

Yep. The ref's should never be allowed to just run off after any game, they have a responsibility to the teams to make sure that they know that the game is officially over, and in that instance that was in question.

I'm sure they wanted to, but they couldn't. IIRC the refs' contracts didn't expire until June. That's also why the NFL couldn't start hiring and training replacement refs before that -- it would have been an act of obvious bad faith and thus have been in violation of labor laws.

Then what they should have done is made an offer to extend the current contract through, say, March 31, 2013, with the caveat that the refs would be locked out if no new deal was reached.
