The 2013 Prospect Thread

Mike Loyko from NE Patriots' Draft had these comments on Fauria from the UCLA-Nebraska game:

2013 NFL Draft Scouting Notes: UCLA vs. Nebraska | NEPatriotsDraft.com - 2013 NFL Draft

Seems pretty fair to me from what I've seen. I wouldn't mind drafting Fauria in the 3rd/4th round as a TE/WR hybrid. He might have more upside than any WR available in that range. But he's still raw, and I wonder why he's so raw at this stage of his development.

If we were going the TE route, I'd far rather Jordan Reed from Florida (although that would probably require a 2nd rounder).

He has a bit of Aaron Hernandez to him (check the play @ 1:13) and with Welker likely gone, Hernandez can effectively play the Welker role with Reed taking Hernandez's spot. It's probably too rich to take another TE that high but considering how important the position is to our offense, I'd rather not go with someone who may or may not work out.

And speaking of Florida players, as a recommendation for a safety (possible Chung replacement should it be necessary), how about Matt Elam? He's aggressive, makes plays in the backfield and even lines up over the slot corner for coverage purposes.

I like him a fair bit, the only thing I don't like is that he sometimes doesn't make the tackle.

I was focused a fair bit last year on that backup/coverage LB role and as we didn't go there last year, I'm looking again this year as I'm not convinced by our current backups (Rivera/Tarpinian).

So here's two for you, both from the same team, Iowa State, which is handy if you have the opportunity to watch them play.

Of the two, this is my marginal favourite:

Jake Knott, LB, 6'3, 239lbs, Snr

5961988-LAS-NEBRASKA-IOWA-STATE-FOOTBALL-11_06_2010-20.08.58.jpg

At 6'3", I like his height in going up against TE's and he's also fast enough to run with RB's downfield (runs in the 4.5 - 4.6 range). He looks good and smooth in coverage but also tackles well and moves through traffic nicely.

Here's Tom Melton:

Jake Knott, WLB- Knott emerged as a starter as a sophomore the same year Klein has and they have been wreaking havoc on defenses ever since. Knott is listed at 6’3”, 239 pounds and plays weak-side next to Klein and barely lost out on the lead for tackles last season as he totaled 115, 4 TFL, 3 pass break-ups, 2 interceptions and four forced fumbles on the year. Like Klein, Knott is a terrific tackler, plays fast, reads and reacts well and simply doesn’t bite on something that isn’t there or flow away from the play. It’s one of the reasons he and Klein have been such fantastic linebackers for the last two years, they are always around the ball thanks to their football IQ’s and instincts. Much like Klein, I would take a linebacker like Knott on my team any day. He isn’t an elite athlete, but he plays fast, smart and is fundamentally sound versus the run and the pass. I think he and Klein will both be NFL starters sooner rather than later, coaches will love how assignment-sound they are.

The other prospect is his partner:

AJ Klein, LB, 6-1, 244, Snr

aj-klein.jpg

He's not quite as fast or smooth in coverage but plays well dropping in zone and is a slightly better than Knott around the LOS. As Tom Melton points out, neither are the type of elite players that warrant an early pick but both have that work hard, good fundamentals attitude that will get them on a roster as backups, situational and special teams guys. Don't know if either are captains but it wouldn't surprise me. Here's Tom Melton on Klein:

AJ Klein, MLB- Klein is one player that every college football fan should be aware of. It’s impossible not to enjoy watching this kid play thanks to his intensity and fearlessness on the field. He’s a great tackler, much like his teammate Jake Knott, and his fantastic instincts and football smarts help compensate for his lack of elite athleticism. Klein is listed at 6’2”, 244 pounds and he is one of the leaders of the defense along with Knott, and produced 116 tackles, 5.5 TFL, 2 sacks, 6 pass break-ups and 1 interception last year. He had an interception in the Iowa State Spring Game that he returned for a touchdown (he has a knack for doing that, he already has 3 pick-6’s in his Iowa State career, a school record), and even though he won’t be able to run with a slot receiver down the seam he is a pretty savvy pass defender. I don’t know if he will be a MLB or a WLB in the NFL or not, but I would take Klein on my team any day. He’s going to be a great special teamer from day one, he’s a great tackler which is becoming more and more difficult to find these days, and he plays smart and fast. Sign me up for a linebacker like that every time, even if he doesn’t run a 4.5 flat. Klien and Knott may not be drafted in the first 2 or maybe even 3 rounds depending on how this year goes, but that has a lot to do with lacking elite athleticism and also questionable upside. What I mean by that is this: You know exactly what you’re getting with those two. I think that’s a positive for them, but some will wonder how much better they can get and knock them. The obsession with potential will lead to them being overlooked by some teams, but a couple smart teams will snatch them up and have reliable starters for the next 10 years.

Prospect Preview: Iowa State Cyclones | NFL Draft Monsters

James at NEPD likes them too:

Klein:

Overview: Klein was his usual self, making plays in coverage as well as against the run. He doesn’t have quite the athleticism as Knott, but he makes up for it with his technique and instincts.

Knott:

Overview: Knott continued to show his above-average athleticism and instincts, especially in the game-clinching interception. I’ve watched Knott a lot over the last few years and I come away more impressed each time I watch him. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Knott picked on day two of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Whilst we are more than sorted with our three LB starters, depending on Dane Fletcher, there's not a lot of depth behind. If you get a chance to watch the Cyclones this year, you'd find it well worth your while focusing on the LB pair - both look like good Pats late round picks. CBS have them as 5th to 6th rounders for now.

In the continuing quest for "grizzlies", how about Tanner Hawkinson of Kansas, as identified by Brother Grid on 10/25/2010

http://www.patsfans.com/new-england.../685974-lt-first-round-page2.html#post2304817

That's from a thread pre-Solder about the need for a LT and ?I particularly noticed a post by Patchick who is about as switched on as any in this forum:

I suspect Nate Solder from Colorado will keep climbing as the draft approaches. He certainly seems like a Patriots type, halfway between Vollmer and Maneri. Super tall, super athletic, top student-athlete and only in his 2nd season on the line after moving from tight end.

Compare to this write up on Hawkinson:

Overview:

Tanner Hawkinson is a great athlete and possesses an outstanding work ethic. He came to Kansas as a tight end, was then moved to defensive line, and finally offensive tackle where he has excelled. He redshirted his first year, but in his second season he earned the starting job at left tackle and started every game. As a redshirt sophomore he started all of Kansas’s games at left tackle again, and again as a junior. His starting experience, size, and athleticism, makes him an attractive project for a team at tackle, or even possibly as a tight end.

Final Projection:

Hawkinson looks to be a late second or a third round pick. The team that selects him gets an athletic and hard working project. He has great size, and looks to have a frame that could pack on some muscle. He is not expected to make an immediate impact, but could make a spot start his rookie year, and develop into a starter as he progresses.

He's a team captain, is coached by Charlie Weiss so we should get a good inside track on suitability and he sports what every Patriot lineman needs to succeed: a rockin' beard:

At 6'5" and 300lbs I wonder whether he'd be a good OG candidate or just a coachable OT of the future.

Probably more of a 2014 prospect but he could come out in 2013.

Alec Ogeltree ILB Georgia, 6'3" 236lbs.

AlecOgletree.jpg

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | Futures: Georgia LB Alec Ogletree

Would be an excellent LB/S hybrid which I believe will be needed in 2-3 years as more teams play follow the leader and go two TE's.

The sad thing is that defensive front seven players for Georgia for the most part, do not seen to develop into playmakers under the Richt coaching regime. And he has recruited some prime grade A talent, just not really develped it.

The Safeties for Georgia and Alabama bear watching:
1.) Rambo, depending on how he runs is an intriguing prospect and someone I would expect the Pats to be watching closely this season.
2.) Lester has looked much more physical this season than last and he has good ball skills.

Anyone interested in the 6'8" 275lb Margus Hunt, DE out of SMU?

dont know which prospects in particular, but id like to see them go after a DE/LB (DE to pair opposite Jones, allowing ninkovich to bolster the lb core is preferred).

also a RG/RT/C (cannon should be moved to RG, connolly moved to C, making RT a bigger priority).

any other picks should be WR and secondary players

I'm trying to build a Draft board at the minute (which as always is incredibly hard at this time of year as the rankings are so fluid), but right now in terms of O-line, I have Barrett Jones very high.

I think we will take a wr or dt w/our first pick nxt year. Robert woods or Jesse Williams n the first

honestly not a huge fan of woods, would rather see a guy like terrence williams or darick rogers (assuming there arent many off field issues)

2013 New England Patriots Unrestricted Free Agents - Offense

Danny Woodhead - expendable
Visanthe Shiancoe - over-the-hill
Kellen Winslow Jr - "sol-ja" needs new knees
Wes Welker - say it isn't so
Julian Edelman - meh
Deion Branch - last hurrah
Donald Thomas - completely worthless
Sebastian Vollmer - chronic back issues persist

The New England Patriots may need to seriously consider rebuilding the right side of the offensive line in calendar year 2013. Personally, I'm not a fan of Dan Connolly playing the right guard position as opposed to the center position on the New England Patriots offensive line.

With such a deep draft glass at DT and Wilfork a year older it bothers me having so much trouble with the right side of line. I say DT/safety/and a left tackle w/versatility in the 3rd. There's always free agency too.

Funny how things can change so quickly. The right side of the line looked pretty strong last year with Waters and Vollmer. Now we should expect to move forward without Waters, and Vollmer will probably be limited for the rest of his tenure here.

The left side has its own issues. Solder has been letting guys get to Brady at a rate that is too consistent for our QBs health. Mankins played on an injured leg last year, and who knows how effective his long term recovery will be.

Based on that, I'm in favor of trading back into the mid to late second, and moving up from the 3rd and 4th round, in order to shore up our line woes. I wanted a solid DT from this draft, but Love has been playing pretty good so far.

Our most valuable commodity needs a good line, or this franchise isn't a contender.

vollmer and solder rotated at RT. Solder actually played more IIRC.

the issue with the right side is Vollmers health (as he is taking a while to come back still) and Marcus Cannon's long term poisition (most think hes more suited for RG, but the pats are playing him at RT, and he hasnt been doing so well)

drafting some true depth on the right side would allow them to move connolly back to C and play cannon at G, and still protect against any potential health problems with vollmer.

solder is a project.

With such a deep draft class at defensive tackle, the New England Patriots can afford to select a defensive tackle in the third round as a backup to Vince Wilfork and Kyle Love. Besides, Brandon Deaderick and Marcus Forston are under contract for the 2013 NFL Season. The New England Patriots need to upgrade starters on the offensive line.

There are some mocks that have guys like Short and Geathers late second. There are a handful of DTs who could make it to the mid to late second that would look good here. Still pulling for Brace and Forston, but I'd not hesitate to pull the trigger on a guy who falls.

I'd also keep an eye out for safety help if Wilson doesn't progress, and Chung either leaves or gets injured again. Good thing our needs for the coming draft line up with the talent pool available.

I personally feel the New England Patriots will re-sign Patrick Chung and allow Kyle Arrington to depart via unrestricted free agency. Patrick Chung also participates in two of the special teams units. As for safeties amended to the 2013 New England Patriots roster, that may depend on the performance of Steven Gregory this season.

The cornerback market is way too inflated these days with outrageous contracts doled out.
