Jaworski: Arizona Cardinals confused Tom Brady in Week 2

I would say they confused are line.. Brady not so much.

The ARZ kicker Jay Feely claims that Brady was telling him how confused he was after the game when they were talking to each other. Feely claims that Brady said that "he had no idea" what they were doing at times.

He definitely was confused at times, there's no doubt about that one.

Once they gained some momentum and threw him his safety blanket back, Brady looked better, but it was too little--too late.

The fact that he put the ball up almost 50 times is what allowed him to have those 300 yards, don't be fooled into thinking that he was comfortable.

He also threw for 300 yds and 2 TD's vs 1 INT in the Jets playoff loss too, and that was a game where he was as confused as any postseason game I've seen him, so the stats can be misleading.

The thing that interests me is that the Cards are basically the Steelers-lite. From the coaching staff to their schemes there's nothing that doesn't come from the Steelers (even some of the players).

And Brady has always owned Pittsburgh and the legend that is **** LeBeau.

Pats offense got shut down by Pitt just last year.

He's 6 & 2 all time against the Steelers. Probably 7 & 2 if he doesn't miss 2008.

He's never really had an issue with Steelers and LeBeau. The only thing they did different last year was play man coverage for the entire 60 minutes, which they've never done ever.

This is bull****. It was all about execution. Patriots receivers were dropping crucial balls that killed drives.

Without those drops, Brady and the Patriots roll.

It was totally out of character to see Lloyd, Welker and even Hernandez early dropping balls like that. Couple that with a very difficult throw to Gronkowski that went through his mitts, and you had drive killing drops. Yes, some were on 2nd down putting Brady in 3rd and long positions, but that's what you get.

I submit that without the drops, Patriots win by 2 TDs and Brady's line on the day is stellar.

Just because receivers were dropping balls doesn't mean that Brady wasn't confused by the coverage at times. There were times out there where you could tell that he went through his progression and was confused about what the defense was giving him (IIRC, one of them resulted in a coverage sack).

Yea last Sunday was kind of scary. McDaniels made same playcalls that still make absolutely no sense to me.

Brady said as much to Feely after the game.

Good. If a defense legitimately showed us something we don't see often, I'm fine with that. I'm OK with trading a loss in September for knowledge & experience that makes us less prone to confusion in December, January, February.

Wouldn't it be fair to say that and defense worth it's pay will occassionally confuse a QB, even one at Brady's level?

According to Jaws (an I don't have insider content) the Cover 2 Zone trap is designed to force interceptions. Well Brady sure threw an interception, but that was due to a D Lineman getting his hands on the ball.

I would think if there was any confusion, it was the fact that the 2 DTs were able to contain/push the pocket and the 5 LBs were able to disguise their defense. There certainly were coverage sacks, but that was always i nthe face of pressure.

I've been saying all along, let's see how well the Cardinals Defense plays through the rest of the season and consider Brady's play against that. It ,might turn out, he was fairly successful. For now, I'd give the credit to Arizona's defense and say they played that well - making opportunistic stops to make the offense more one dimensional.

People forget sometimes it takes a series of first downs to go down the field and only 1 set of downs has to be stopped.

Totally agree plus the Welker and Lloyd drops came on 3rd down would have been first downs. Making it worse after the Lloyd drop the Cards blocked the punt. That doesn't even get into the fact that the Cards defensive line owned the Pats offensive line for most of the day and the fact that the interception came on a tip at the line not confusion. Brady can be confused by the defense like any other QB this game just isn't an example of that.

I made the observation on gameday that they were essentially in 24 nickel all day long, and that since they could contain the line with only 2 linemen (albeit very athletic and strong linemen), they could deploy the rest of their personnel as they pleased.

As far as Brady being confused, I agree that he did appear to be befuddled for the most part, especially with the corners jumping the routes which you don't normally do in a cover 2 zone, IIRC.

I did read that the Arizona DC mentioned that he was already working on the gameplan for this game, as soon as the schedule came out, sometimes near the end of last season.

It also doesn't help that the whole offensive gameplan changed after Hernandez went out. They did not adjust well at all. It's not going to be a rough road the next 5 weeks.

Nah !!! I though Josh did the confusing of brady !

Cards should send josh a thankyou card.

Brady may have been confused by some of their coverages, but that's not what tanked us. There were a fair amount of coverage pressures, but this game was won (by the skin of Gost's shoes) in the trenches. This reminds me of the post SB42 praise for Spagnuolo. It's pretty easy to come up with these epically schemed stunts and delay blitzes when you have such a massacre on the line of scrimmage.

Thank Jebus, Buddha, and Tom Cruise that Suggs is not playing this Sunday.

These kind of things happen when you have these marginal teams spending months preparing to play you. It's their Super Bowl. That's why we always end up losing these early season games to mediocre teams (at least I think it's a major factor). The Cards DC was talking about preparing for the Pats back in April. When you're on the mountaintop....
