How BAD are Kellen Winslow's knees???

I have been pouring over the web trying to find out exactly how BAD Winslow's knees are (because that is all you hear the analysts talk about) right now.....but can't find anything current. Rookie year broke fibula...no big deal. Had the infamous motorcycle accident in 05 in which he tore his ACL in right knee.......then in 07 had surgery for "microfracture" in the right knee to remove some torn cartilage but apparently nothing major there...and lastly a staph infection in 08......but that is the RAP sheet that I can find. Maybe the right knee has degenerated and that is the issue but can't find anything concrete on that. Main positive FACT is in the past several years this guy HAS YET TO MISS any games. Obviously he must be a tough SOB.....Wishing him great success here and if anyone can provide any more info on WHY everyone is going on and on about the "Well we'll see if his knees can hold up" BS....I would love to hear about it! Thanks

Winslow caught 75 passes for 763 yards last year for Buccanneers. Those aren't shabby numbers for someone with bad knees. I'm in no way down playin his knees just sayin' that I can see him doin a adequate job whatever Pats have in store.

BB did have him earlier for a look so he must've seen something positive. BB admits he doesn't know what KW can bring to'da table but I can't see him brought in on a whim with that said if he doesn't work out, Cut'm like everyone else.

That's how I feel. Now that Branch has been re-signed, I feel a lot better about the Winslow signing (had my doubts as to how fast he could pick up the offense to contribute).

He's the ultimate "rent a TE" to fill AH's slot on a temporary basis. Doesn't have to last a season or play 16 games. Unless a new injury occurs from limited service, as a body he could be a good pickup. Still a twit though.

microfracture = major surgery, indicating little cartilage is there.

He had been quoted as saying that most players would not be able to play with the pain he plays with. I'm not sure if that's mostly bravado or not. To his credit, he doesn't miss games and he has been productive.

Knowing who his father is and what his father is most famous for, I'd say it's probably overly dramatic bravado.

Agreed, when the Seahawks cut him the reports were that it was over money. They asked him to take a pay cut, he refused, and he was cut.

Usually players are asked to take a pay cut late in their contract, when they may be well underperforming the contract.

In Winslow's case, if he was with the Bucs last year, how can the Seahawks justify asking him to take a pay cut if they JUST signed him to the deal. Or was it a trade (maybe I missed that)?

Dude has been insanely productive regardless of any health issues. Teams probably don't want to give him a deal because the wheels could fall off at any moment (and he's a massive douche). Since we're just paying him game-by-game...ride him 'til the wheels fall off.

I wouldn't be surprised to see us keep him in the rotation even when AH comes back. It would be hilarious to see the first 4TE offense ever. AH-Gronk-KW2-Shank.

Don't ever take a staph infection lightly. Depending on the type of staph and where it attcks, a staph infection can seriously affect your life and even kill you. Take it from someone who's life has been seriously affected by a staph infection. The person I know who had a staph infection in her neck is lucky to be alive and even luckier that she can walk.

Yeah...I wasn't taking the staph infection lightly. I know there are different levels/severities of these as well. Some are wiped out quickly with antibiotics and consistent wound care....some become global and those are the ones that can kill you. Anyways, post was about his "knees" and what he is currently dealing with now that has mediots thinking he isn't going to make it....thanks

That is true....not like he needs to play out the rest of the season here just hopefully provide some offensive production while Hernandez is out. I had a friend that went to UM and did some work with the Football team and he didn't have alot of nice things to say about Winslow. Even most of his teammates there disliked the guy.....anyways as long as he can haul in a few passes and not be a disease in the lockerroom....it will all be good...

stcj true, on that premise I would say that Winslow bein with Pats with their NO NONSENSE "Patriot Way" lockerroom mentality is his best chance for him to get it together and for him to be part of something special with an organization that has Pats & SB Champs in same conversation year in year out.

They traded for him. He had previously signed the highest contract for a TE despite all his problems after Tampa traded with Cleveland for him. Obviously the attitude remained at issue and when Schiano took over in Tampa he was perceived as to much of a problem to justify the money or the effort. And despite media reports that are always reliable about how great he was in camp, they cut him. He was due $3.3M. He's a wildly talented guy. He's also not the brightest bulb on the planet (he bought that motorcycle after failing the written license test), can be a pain in the ass in a locker room (which shouldn't be a problem here), and has never been asked to play in a system this disciplined (which could be an issue).

The knees are bad. He admits playing in pain. I think there have been issues with managing his situation in practice. That won't work here if that's what it comes to. He likely was asked to sign a waiver stipulating that if the knees act up the team is off the hook. It will be interesting to see what the contract was for. Can't be much or Rosenhaus would have leaked something about it.

Noteworthy lack of YAC is his problem. He can get open somehow but can't make guys miss. Think "Shawn Jefferson". He'll catch balls if he learns the offense. He could help move the chains.
