Atleast three different drives ground to a hault with one simple substitution last week. Ridley ran off, Woodhead came on. Ridley: Explosive, elusive, fast, strong, game-changer. Woody: Smart, kind of blocks, takes what is given, sure handed.

I could kind of understand the surehanded thing being a BB grudge carry over from last year, but wtf. Even the on "the hold," woody didnt do anything to make the play, the oline simply took Ari to school (for all those thomas haters, the kid looked good in the run, even more impressive pulling, although he tended to line up funny tipping his hand), so I don't want to hear it. On atleast three of the previous scoring accidents (drive doesn't fly for me, we were driving before Ridley gets pulled), the offense was having their way up to midfield, earning first downs in ARI territory. Enter woodhead. Cue up incompletion/lackluster 2yd run and now we are looking at 3rd and eight. Obviously none of them panned out. More than once, Woody had lanes to run in if he could even break arm tackles from engaged defenders inside. Nope. Its not like Ridley was calling himself, one drive I think it took five plays...WTF.

If anything, you would think the reverse would be in effect. Use the less explosive, safe guy when in your own end. Hit the fifty and bring out the pitbull and hope he remembers who his handler is. ****, this kid has looked nothing short of spectacular. And we pull him when he starts getting into area of the field where he truely could break it for a score on any touch? all this kid does is produce 10-20 yd runs. Wouldn't these big gains be that much more impactful inside the fourty? Any redzone run he is a true danger to punch it in.

Corey Dillon, or Woody? Ok, ridley =\= dillon, he probably could be as good if he keeps his **** together. Hell, most the time faulk only saw the field on third down, as it should be. Occasionally, there would be no huddle spurts where Corey had to watch, but not planned, predetermined, player for player subs. WTF. Its like it was the gameplan. "Yeah, Stevan, its Josh. Bill is worried about the stats your racking up and we need to keep the TDs to a minimum for when we lowball you and extension offer next year. Any time we cross the fourtyfive I'm going to go ahead and put woody in there, this offense is so good it won't matter..." it makes no sense. I am at a loss. I understand (kind of) when your running the two minute drill and need someone with an understanding of the offense and familiarity with tb. At the same time, this is Ridley's second year in the program, no?

Let me put it this way, say we traded both Woody and Ridley to Bal for Rice (will never happen, but work with me here). Who do you want to see lining up in their backfield? Hell, I couldn't answer ridley with a straight face. The guy can hurt you, any play. It's almost like BB/McD think they can outsmart everyone. Seems BB may have realized the err in this thinking, look at what he did with the defense in one draft.

Everyone loves to talk about the situation with Wes, but this goes unnoticed. Wes is one of four or five possible receiving options at any one time. We rarely have more than one true running option on the field at a time. And I doubt anyone will try to argue Woody being a better back than Ridley. Hell, I'd wager that more people would argue Vereen being a better back than Woody than Woody being better than Ridley (I am not saying Vereen is anything, outside of an impressive looking option based on preseason). Is it me or does Josh seem like the special kid figuring out which matchbox car he wants to play with. They are all shiny, theyre all new, hell, most of them look the same. But as soon as one proves it can do xyz, he has to see if option b can do it as well.

The whole WR/RB thing smells of cutting the only serviceable safeties last year. Hey Josh, just because you can doesn't mean you should.

If Gronkowski didn't get called for that holding call and Woodhead's winning TD run made for a miraculous win for the Pats last Sunday,we aren't having this conversation.

There are posts that vent.......and then there are inane hissy fits:bricks:

Exactly right.

This was all from the previous drives stalling. Only mentioned the hold as I assumed someone would throw it out there as proof of Woody's abilities.

Exactly right.

Go back and watch the drives grind to a hault when Ridley comes out. think I did defend sending Woody out for no huddle moments.

you would be the same person saying...lets see more of woodhead...if that TD stood :rolleyes:

Lol, was calling for more Ridley last year too...

Doesn't make the fact that woody scores that TD this thread is not written. Hey it's ok to vent, but let's not pretend woody can't run the ball.

Also saying he can't break contact isnt true. Go back and watch his game v the ravens last year (during the season) and see how many tackles he breaks in that game.

Hey Patsfans Messageboard,

Can we end the woolster22 experiment?

So get rid of the only real veteran RB on the team. Who has performed in the past. He was unlucky with the TD. Absolutely no way do we cut him.

Since Ridley has had 40 carries in 2 games, that puts him on pace for 320 carries. That invokes a 'Ridley should remain in the game'? If Ridley has a modest 3 more carries per game, that would put him on pace for almost 370 carries this year. Check out this chart regarding players with 370+ carries in one season and what happened the next season. While not overwhelming evidence, it is good food for thought on this issue.

I take your argument to ultimately mean the Patriots need better than Woody (when Ridley sits). Woody has served his role fairly well though this year doesn't reflect that. Yet it is only two games at this point. If his production is still waning then maybe Vereen or someone else will get a shot. Regardless, I doubt your desire for Ridley to see more touches is realistic on a prolonged basis.

I presume Vereen dresses for this weekends game.

That will relieve the load somewhat on Ridley too.

Can Sunday come fast enough?

Woody is a very useful piece. BUt its how he's used that is key. There was an instance during Sundays game where I believe we were in the redzone. 3rd and 2 and its a handoff to WOoody right up the middle. Stuffed! Short filed goal. How and where we use him is the key.

It's SO Woody's fault that the Cards defense diagnosed and stuffed the ill-timed draw play called by Josh McD. He must have given it away. And he should have run right thru the 3 unblocked defenders.

Damn him for making Gronk hold on that TD callback!

I can only imagine how Jets Insider like posters will become some time in the future once the Pats become a .500 team or worse. Guess being deceased has its merits.

You might wanna go back and watch the would be TD again, it was more than just great blocking.

Woodhead also did convert 1 of the 3rd down dives. I agree it shouldn't be called more than once a game or so but it has been successful in small doses. JMD just went to the well one too many times there. (EDIT: I'm referring to 3rd down runs specifically when I say once a game. Overall I'd like to see Woody get about 5 carries a game).

I believe the Pats had 12 possessions, of those three came to a halt on a set of downs where Woodhead touched the ball, and of those three two were third down runs where blocking was at least as responsible as Woodhead for the failure. I think you're grossly overstating his negative effect on Patriots' drives. Now if you want to make a claim that his presence on the field makes it easier to defend the Patriots, which results in a greater number of negative plays for other players; I'd suggest spending some of that time you spent on your first post to actually gather facts/breakdowns to prove that point.

Woodhead is a primarily a third down back, which means a higher percentage of his snaps will result in a drive ending. It's simply a role where you're either a hero or a zero based on a small, highly pivotal sample size per game. I'd suggest waiting at least four games to draw any conclusions about Woodhead's usefulness because @ ~10 touches per game it's easy for a hold by Gronk and a blown assignment to horribly skew/screw his stat line. The opposite is true as well, but up to this point nothing has broken his way, and until the sample size is enlarged it's unfair to blame that on anything but luck.

While this is a product of fantasy football deliberation it does bring up a very good point- with Vereen continually being out, this puts a load on Ridley that we don't really want on him. Ridley is very explosive and has all the makings of an elite back, and we want to spread that load over the years so he remains serviceable. Woodhead is a very important change of pace back that we need. Ridley runs into people, Woodhead slips out of their grasps. Nothing more would tire out a defense than having to deal with a variety of well-rested backs, each with their own speciality.
