On First Take right now. Smith's saying Brady's just a "company man" and is throwing Welker under the bus for not calling out the Patriot's treatment of Welker.

Re: Stephen A Smith going of on Brady

Stephen A Smith is an idiot with a microphone. You avoid idiots with a microphone.

Re: Stephen A Smith going of on Brady

That company pays him $18 million a year and he answers to two of the best in the biz at what they do: Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick. Why the hell wouldn't you be a "company man" under that scenario?

re: The mediots going off on "The Welker Situation" thread.

So he wants Brady to throw management under the bus instead? Yeah, that would look really good on Brady. Thankfully Brady is (as he has most often in the past) handling this one ideally.

Re: Stephen A Smith going of on Brady

I think First Take is orchestrated. Skip loves Brady and Stephen A. has to go against that. The bottom line is, there is NO WAY to know what the Pats are thinking. They phased out Randy Moss in 2010 and traded him - but the Pats did not say a word. It was the Vikings that illuminated the issues with Moss.
With Welker, I don't know if it is a health issue, a discipline issue, or a "going in a different direction" issue. Stephen A. gets paid to speculate and blaming Brady is an easy argument (not saying I agree with it).

Why would you ever watch that show? Contrived debate between two *******s.

re: The mediots going off on "The Welker Situation" thread.

Stephen A Smith talks a lot of sense when it comes to the NFL. I agree with most of his opinions.

However when it comes to the Patriots he turns into a complete douche!! I'm not sure if it's to disagree with Bayliss for the sake of it or because he's a bitter New Yorker that doesn't like Bostonian teams!!

As for this example of it, Brady has lost or seen lots of receivers, some he was close to personally, phased out for whatever reason. I'm sure even Stephen A Smith will agree Belichick kinda knows what he's doing on that front!

re: The mediots going off on "The Welker Situation" thread.

It's odd:

Smith is usually sensible about everything but the Patriots.

Skip is usually delusional about everything, except the Patriots.

Were Smith (whoever he is, as I watch zero sports shows) capable of coherent thought he'd criticize Welker who was on WEEI yesterday in a fine mood regarding the team, excepting the minor detail of a loss, that is. W3 spouted the company line, Kool Aid dribbling down his chin. Love W3.

re: The mediots going off on "The Welker Situation" thread.

That does it....I'm not supporting Tom Brady any MORE!!!! I've had it!!!! If Stephen A. (A stands for something dirty and stinky I am sure) says that Tom is just a company man....then that is what must be going on around here......

re: The mediots going off on "The Welker Situation" thread.

forget any issues with brady......he's no different from other QB's when it comes to the quality of surrounding players affecting his ability to execute.

I will say that the coaching staff did not put the pats in the best possible position to win the game sunday. regardless of what smoking guns are behind the curtain, to me it is fairly obvious that if the pats played and schemed with welker the way they had done in previous years, they would have won this game.

I can't possibly see how using a guy playing under the franchise tag the way the pats have used welker leading to a positive end result. Somebody will give him good money next year .... close to the same he would have gotten from the pats if he had a greed to the 2 year deal...plus he will have gotten 9.5M this year.

forget the idea of 'saving him' for later in the season.....did he wear out last year? they can pace him plenty and give edelman PT when they are up a few scores.

re: The mediots going off on "The Welker Situation" thread.

Brady has been towing the company line his whole career. His career is winding down, his time is short it is time for him to stand up and start making demands. It's now or never folks! Welker gives this team the best chance of winning, certainly Edelman doesn't. Brady needs to demand Welker in the game plan more and get the O line cleaned up and bring in one more receiver that can help the team.

He has enough money, his wife makes a ton, he shouldn't keep his mouth shut because he doesn't want to bite the hand that feeds him. It's time for him to step up and be selfish here.

The Organization is making some bad decisions here, its a ego/power/Patriot way move they are making with Welker here and it is going to cost them the season!

I agree. I am done with Brady. He sucks anyway, just a tick better than Hugh Millen. Overrated. What's he done in his career? I bet we can get Bledsoe out of his winery and have him be QB. I saw Grogan on TV, he looks like he could play. ish. Zo's in the building, let's get him watching some film. Eff Brady and his company man ways.

re: The mediots going off on "The Welker Situation" thread.

Brady hopes to play another 5 years and not reinventing himself on some random team ala Peyton Manning or Joe Montana. He knows full well that his name is on the same list Welker's is being crossed off of. So do Mankins and Wilfork. Wrong side of 30, elite money. This is the my way or the highway system. Like I said a week or so ago, watch your back and head on a swivel is the order of the day these days. Everyone and everything but the system is expendable.

re: The mediots going off on "The Welker Situation" thread.

This is too much.

Nobody knows anything. Brady played through the playoffs last year with a separated left shoulder; Mankins played with a torn ACL the entire season. Welker sat for most of the offseason; is it POSSIBLE that maybe he has an injury or concussion that we don't know about? Or is everyone out there just too smart to consider that there could be factors they're unaware of?

Oh, but the Patriots don't tell the world he's injured or concussed, so he must be fine!

You really think Belichick would franchise Wes at $10M per year to embarrass him, make a point (apparently about players signing the franchise tag- how dare you!), and "phase him out" of the offense. Weird, despite that they knew lots of players in the past would be leaving, I don't recall transition seasons for guys like Seymour, Samuel, McGinest, or Law.

Still a terrible game plan on Sunday, but there is obviously more to the Welker story than we know. A concussion or injury is much more likely than these conspiracy theories that make absolutely no sense. Belichick, Brady, McDaniels, Welker- the one thing these guys ALL have in common is they'll do anything to win.

"Company Man" Isn't that the role of a franchise quarterback ?
Steven A is right ! Brady should stand up in his post game interview and drive the bus right over BB and Mr. Kraft ! That's what Demarcuss Russell or Ryan Leaf would do!

As for Welker I find it hard to believe the Pats would pay Wes the franchise tag of what 9-10 mil, just to phase him out. This has all the makings of a classic ropa dope. Make Wes appear to be less vital in the offensive scheme, then against the big boys Texans / SF - Welker will put up sick numbers.

Hernandez Get well soon "WE NEED RAIN"

re: The mediots going off on "The Welker Situation" thread.

I, for one, am utterly shocked that Stephen A. Smith has no idea what he's talking about. He's usually so diligent and thoughtful in voicing his opinions.

agreed, but if you are crossing off welker, you know he's here for the year, but not afterward, so why not get what you can from him, and then just part ways?

does BB agree with Brady's 5 year plan, or is he saying to himself 'I can't see having him here for 5 more years'? is he setting up the offense for a complete turnover over the next 2 years?

re: The mediots going off on "The Welker Situation" thread.

Well he is NY based and I think still has a radio talk show in the NY market so Pats bashing will play well with his fans.

Wake me up when HE throws ESPN management under the bus on principle.

I have over the years conditioned myself to assume he is not that arrogant. But I've been wrong before. For all we know the Patriots want TFB to retire a Patriot on the same terms they seemed to want Welker to last fall. Their terms.
