How bad was the holding penalty by Gronk?

Havent seen a replay of the holding call how bad was it?

It was a hold. I'm not sure what the hubbub is about. Sucks that Gronkowski was holding downfield and Woodhead came near him. Not sure why that's the official's fault though.

I'm pissed at gronk for poor situational awareness...field position was more important than a TD.

with how this game was being called it had about a 3% chance of being called

with all the holding that was being done TO Gronk throughout the game that was uncalled, this was an easy slide....but the refs found their flags at the most innoportune time for us

Let me start by saying the Pats deserved to lose. But, in my opinion, that was not a call that needed to be made. It seemed borderline, but they seemed to be calling holding moderately tight all game. It looked like Gronk wrapped right arm around the guy for a fraction of a second too long. It could have gone either way.

You seem to be intent on pinning this one on the refs, but they made that same call against AZ on at least two (and I think 3) occasions.

The only time I saw them call holding on the Cards was when Chandler Jones beat the OT and the OT had to wrap his arm around Jones neck to stop him from killing the QB.

I can see why it got called. Gronkowski had his right hand behind the left shoulder of the db. When the db tries to get away he gets trapped in gronks right hand. The first thing you learns about blocking is hands to the chest. If you have them outside holdings will get called and that is what happened here. i paused at the moment the db tries to get away and you can see gronks hand clinching the TV numbers on the db. It wasn't a big hold but still a hold. The reason they called it is because it was in the open and he could have had a chance for the tackle.

Anytime you hold someone outside the chest and he can't get away, the chance for a holding call is big. You don't need to hold like a grip, if you have your arm to his sides and disable his movement sideways thats a hold.

IMHO it was a hold as defined by the rules. Yet it was also at a threshold that frequently is not called.
My definition of good officiating: Call the obvious penalties otherwise let them play. That appeared to be the case all game up until that call (again IMHO). With that said, borderline or bad penalties get called. It happens to every team at one time or another. We had the opportunity to still win and did not take advantage of it. A good team takes advantage of their opportunities and bad teams don't. However, please notice I say opportunitieS. The lack of taking advantage of one single opportunity does not define if you are a good or bad team.

There was a hold against Wilfork as well that I remember. Turned him around like Gronk did.

If they call that than there should have been about 35 holding calls against the LT who held on pretty much every play.

That nicely defines the situation surrounding the Gronk holding call.

I wish it hadn't been called, it was, it was holding to some degree, the patriots still should have won, time to get past this call.

YES. Contextually speaking, such an awful call. When the game is on the line, I thought the refs were supposed to let them play unless there is something that is egregious. Or maybe that is only in Superbowls where we are playing for an undefeated season.

Saying he's seen worse isn't the same as saying it was IFFY. It was the right call according to him, he's just seen guys get away with worse. (Probably when the regular refs were playing, although then he goes out of his way to rationalize rather than admit that).

They aren't supposed to let them play. Part of the problem with all refs and the regulars in particular is they develop tendancies to call it impossibly tight or ridiculously loose and usually choose to let them play come playoff time. Although not always... That Superbowl was a case where something that clearly should have been called wasn't. Happens more often than folks are presently remembering. Like calling face guarding...when no such penalty even exists. The regulars tend to make phantom calls more than the replacements because of bias based on familiarity. I think these guys are just trying to do the right thing. They made some mistakes today, just like the regulars always do. But this wasn't one of them. Would have been nice for us if they missed it, but then all the AZ fans would be going berserk.
