Most of us were mad that we didn't get more than a 2nd...

There was never a chance to get more than that with him tagged.

Gronk and Hernandez in one draft....amazing

Really, we shouldn't get too proud of the TE haul in 2010. That will turn out to be one of the finest TE classes in history. Like shooting fish in a barrel.

Jermain Gresham to Cinci in the 1st. Quality... although Gronk has outplayed him.
Baltimore drafted Ed ****son (3rd) and Dennis Pitta (4th). Both are solid.
New Orleans got Jimmy Graham at the end of the 3rd, which is better value than Gronk.
KC took Tony Moeaki in the 3rd.

That's a pretty solid haul.

Yeah, but not better value than Aaron Hernandez. :)

ever notice that??..I know YOU do, CT...the whole NFL media consistently blacks out or blots out any mention of AHern...other teams fans all clamor about how they will stop the Gronk when it should be obvious to opposing defensive coaches that the real nightmare is Hernandez...and he's SIGNED long term...dyam, how did we ever get so lucky???

The 2010 Draft and UDFA are going to be our core for a long time I believe.
So far, only Taylor Price can be considered as not a solid pick in regards to the position they took him. Navarro Bowman was picked after Price if you want to put a premium on the position of pick.

1st Round (27th Overall) – Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers
2nd Round (42nd Overall) – Rob Gronkowski, TE, Arizona
2nd Round (53rd Overall) – Jermaine Cunningham, OLB, Florida
2nd Round (62nd Overall) – Brandon Spikes, LB, Florida
3rd Round (90th Overall) – Taylor Price, WR, Ohio
4th Round (113th Overall) – Aaron Hernandez, TE, Florida
5th Round (150th Overall) – Zoltan Mesko, P, Michigan
6th Round (205th Overall) – Ted Larsen, C, NC State
7th Round (208th Overall) – Thomas Welch, OT, Vanderbilt
7th Round (247th Overall) – Brandon Deaderick, DL, Alabama
7th Round (248th Overall) – Kade Weston, DL, Georgia
7th Round (250th OVerall) – Zac Robinson, QB, Oklahoma State

I think we got Kyle Love and Fletcher that same year.
So that is basically 17% of the 53 man roster. Exactly what a draft should be used for.

It will all change this year.:)

Pioli gets a lot of flak for the drafts prior to 2010 but they just were not strong drafts talent wise. But the 2010 draft was a great draft to have lots of ammo. Personally, I believe that if Pioli had been with the Pats in 2010 they would have still killed it. As mentioned before by others in this thread, the Pats raked in a great TE haul but that draft was absolutely loaded with TE talent. If you had the flexibility of drafting 2 in the top 4 rounds, this was the draft to do it in. 2010 was a deep draft and the Pats killed it.

Pioli has 3 Superbowl rings and a 4th appearance. Casero has 1 appearance..
Both are good. Instead of blaming Pioli, why not the coincidence that the drafts after 2009 got good once a certain coach left to decimate Denver's roster and then also run the worst offense in the entire league in St Louis....

I think that changes this year assuming good health for AHern. For lack of a better analogy, he's the queen on the chess board for this offense. He lines up all over the place and hell they even let him run the ball, you. Just don't know where he's coming from and can kill you multiple ways. The offense will go through him over the life of that contract. I loved that pick when it was made, moreso than Gronk because I was more familiar with Hernandez, but having both of them locked up gives this team more options and looks than most teams in the league.

Are you blaming J. McD? He is back now, has been since the beginning of the year, and the Patriots, seemingly, had a good draft in 2012.

What was so special about that draft was it helped keep this dynasty afloat even in transition. That was the only recent year I remember the Pats were potentially supposed to miss the playoffs.

Looking at the draft we got:

1. Devin McCourty- He may have struggled last season, but still can't take away his stellar rookie year. Should be improving off of last year's performance. Grade- B

2a. Rob Gronkowski- This pick has really spoken for itself. One of Belichick's best draft decisions he's made in a long time. Grade A+

2b.Jermaine Cunningham- After appearing to be a bust after his very quiet 2011 campaign, many had already written him down as a bust. However, the 2nd rounder has shown new signs of life this offseason. And after already recording a sack in the first game of the 2012 season, the future looks bright for the ex-gator. Grade- for now a C+.

2c. Brandon Spikes- While he has had issues with staying healthy, when this man is on the field, he makes his presence known up the middle. Has provided that anchor up the middle, and has helped Mayo move to the outside to beomce more of a playmaker. Great pick. Grade-B+

3. Taylor Price- Ehhh...Taylor Price. Price was another case of us drafting an underachieving WR in the mid rounds. Never really showed any potential on the squad. Grade- D

4.Aaron Hernandez- Potentially the steal of the draft. He fell this far due to a failed drug test, but how could this talent be ignored until the 4TH round?? Like Gronkowski, he's been part of the reason our offense is as dominant as it is today. Grade- A

5.Zoltan Mesko- While most of the time drafting a punter doesn't sit well with fans, Mesko has shown to be a very consistently reliable punter. Solid pick. Grade- B

Rest of the draft-
Kade Weston, Thomas Welch, and Zac Robinson never caught on and didn't stay long. Neither did Ted Larson though he has found success in Tampa Bay. The only impact player that came out of the later rounds was DE Brandon Deaderick, who has brought in solid depth on our D-line.

Overall draft grade- A-. Probably one of Bill's best drafts over the last several years.

It's scary that Gronk and Hernandez have only had 2 years in the league so far and are as good as they are already. Certified studs.

McCourty and Spikes are solid regulars, both potential to be pro bowlers IMO but we'll see.

Mesko is an elite P IMO, if he's not then I'll at least say there's very few punters in the league right now I'd take over him. He doesn't boom his kicks but he always gives the coverage team a shot and he is very good at getting kicks inside the 20, a refreshing change from Chris "touchback king" Hansen. I might have heard somewhere that his net average last year was tops in the league. Monumental upgrade and he's been an underrated key to our success.

Cunningham looks like he could join the ranks as at least a successful part time contributor.

This draft has potential to eclipse our '95 draft as the best in Pats history

I loved that draft for many reasons. Honestly though, i was happiest that we drafted mesko at the time of the draft. Even though i liked the players we selected, you never know if they will actually work out but i was pretty confindent mesko had to be better than chris hanson who just sucked.

2009 had to be one of the most annoying seasons i have ever seen. It was was worse than our losing seasons with crappy punter, garbage second half offense, guyton and tbc, maroney running into peoples backs. I hated that season and our blowout loss to the ravens was just the icing on the cake.

I would go ever further and say that the blowout game @ the Saints was the first time in the last decade I thought, "we are just not that good."

Surprised you would highlight Taylor Price and then include Brandon Deaderick as the rest of the draft. I view Deaderick as a very good player. Capable of starting in a 3-4 and providing excellent depth as a 3rd or 4th DT in a 4-3. His potential is just scratching the surface right now. He looked much faster last week in the snaps he saw.

Our drafts have been better since Pioli left. I'm not saying it's 100% on him, but to try to place it all, or mostly on other factors is absurd.

It doesn't mean that Pioli is bad at drafting. It's been stated that the team would only draft players that both BB and SP could agree on. That may have just been too intensive of a filter, resulting in numerous misses compared to if it had been just one or the other making the pick.

KC traded their 4th pick away in 2010, and it came before New England's, so it's quite possible (although hard to calculate because of myriad variables) that NE would not had drafted AH if Pioli had been here. Chances are they would have gone with a safer pick that SP and BB could both agree on.

It appears BB on his own is willing to take calculated risks (Vollmer, Gronk, AH as examples) more frequently and many have paid off. Others of course have not (Price for example).

I just want some probowlers on defense - especially from this year's draft!

It had nothing to do with putting down Deaderick, it was only because I was highlighting the first 4-5 rounds and they had so many late rounders. I decided to just combine them.
