Another lengthy totorial and well worth the read. Breaks out the results by concept. Screen shots included. Focused on what didn't work and why.

The run game was impressive against the Titans so I took a look at what they were doing.

From 2007 to last year, the Patriots have featured three core run plays consisting of Inside Zone, Outside Zone and One Back-Powers. They choose these three concepts because each can be run with a single back from any formation. Each is also adaptable to two back looks.

The Pats have also carried various scheme plays they use by game plan (Whams, Iso, Traps, G Powers etc.) Draw is a complement of their pass game. Last year, Bill O'Brien installed and made heavy use of a Toss play that had been a common call years before. He used it so much it was his fourth most called run concept last year.

Looking at the Titans game shows that Josh and BOB are of singular mind, at least to this point. Josh made use of four different run concepts in this game. The Inside Zone, Outside Zone, Single Back-Power & the Toss. No other concepts were used in this game other than Brady's sneak and kneel down.

The least successful concept was the Inside Zone. Last year the OL had difficulty gaining vertical push on their combos which is a critical aspect of the concept. They had the same problem Sunday. Josh called the Inside Zone five times. Ridley gained +1, +2, +1 and +2. Woodhead gained +1 on his only IZ. These plays were not well executed.

Thanks for posting this. I gave it a scan, and will go back in a bit and reread it after I've had more coffee.

I really love these analysis articles.

Nobody's perfect, and AWTE makes his share of mistakes. But, if you're looking on Patriots forums for a poster who combines frequency of 'serious' posts with depth and insight into the nuts and bolts of what the Patriots are doing, there's nobody better than AWTE. AWTE, Jays52 and Unoriginal are great reads, IMO, when they start breaking things down (BOR was always worth the read, too, but he's not been around in a while).

one problem... I don't have a login to see the images.

AWTE and Jays52 are on a par for me in terms of their insight and expertise and detailed technical analysis and integrating it into a big picture. Really great stuff. I tried to get AWTE to do some of the Patscast broadcasts a few years ago, because I thought he would provide great insights.

Can't register for one?

OT: What are the other patriots boards that folks here like to follow? I'd honestly never run across that site before

Patriots Planet and Patsfans are pretty much the two. I'm sure there are other good ones, but as far as size of membership goes, I don't think any others are in their ballpark.

Running Woody up the middle is, and has always been, an exercise in futility. It was during such a run in 2010 that he suffered his concussion late in the year, when he had hardly ever run inside previously.
And getting a push up the middle from the try-hard midget Wendell, the better as a Center Connolly (if he's even available) & the still-recovering (or breaking-down) Mankins will be an issue all season long.

Edit: running Woody on up-the-middle-draws, either from shotgun or under Center, can be effective when the opposing defense is expecting pass; it is the up-the-middle run from a straight handoff that is effectively useless.

Thanks to AWTE for the time and effort and to Mo for 'bringing' him here. It's a great way to look at the game.

I broke down and joined Patriots Planet too, so i could follow along with some of the threads, view images, etc. Looks like some good folks there, though this is still my primary Pats go-to place.

How sad is it that I come here first before I check any of the actual news sites, sports sites, etc?

Great point! Thanks to the many posters here who provide links to news sources worth reading and conversely warn us about media tools so that we don't give them clicks. Your contributions are appreciated by many.
