Let's talk Chandler Jones

Greetings,
I admit I was excited in the way that BB sees something in this guy that other teams did not. I was not excited when I watched the college film of him, I felt there were other guys out their who were much better at pass rushing(Mercilus and Upshaw come to mind). I have to say the thing that did stand out to me was he was amongst the best 4-3de/3-4 OLB against the run, and I felt if he was ushered it would be as him being a run defender first. His pass rushing did not impress me that much. With that being said, I hope he has a phenomenal rookie season and possibly wins rookie of the year.

Chandler Jones reminds me a lot of jason pierre paul

I understand it's way too early to make such comparisons, but I am talking in terms of skillset/tools on the football field. Thoughts?

I'm not surprised that he was gassed. Jones is constantly hustling and playing until the play is dead.

Re: Chandler Jones reminds me a lot of jason pierre paul

I will say this: If Chandler turns out to be anywhere near JPP, im a happy fan.

To be fair I am pleasantly surprised with Jones. I thought he'd be starting by half way into the season so this a plus! He looks really good out there. The only thing I have to say is that I thought he looked tired during the 2nd half but it's definately no biggy.

Many of us felt the same way, thought BB & crew would bring him along slowly so he could become acclimated to the speed and skill of the pro game. This is a nice surprise, not so much as he started, but because he seemed to play at a high level when he was in there..

You get donkey punched in the **** and let's see how "energetic" you are afterwards...

That said, this kids burst once free from his lineman is something to behold. He seems to be the real deal. When can we start making threads calling for bb to extend him before he gets too expensive?

Blah! After one game, I expect his ceiling to be Lawrence Taylor and anything less will be a major disapointment. :D

Here's a good breakdown of Chandler's day against the Titans LT Roos:

Chandler Jones up to tall task - BostonHerald.com

Jones went one-on-one with Roos 53 times. Based on film review, Jones won 11 of those matchups to either record a sack, stuff a run, blow up a gap to change the direction of a play, hit the quarterback or flush the passer from the pocket. Jones lost 12 battles, either being knocked to the ground or failing to get through Roos to make a play with ample time. They had four draws.

On 27 plays, Jones didn’t make an impact because the Titans ran in the other direction or passed the ball too quickly for anyone on the defensive line to make a play. Jones also had two plays in which he checked the tight end, one in which he diagnosed and pursued a bubble screen, and one offside penalty (at least he made the most of the flag and got a sack, which didn’t count). Jones didn’t make an impact in the five plays he was double-teamed.

Can't wait to see him against a less than mobile qb. Let the kid pin them back and get after it...

You should be able to see it this week. Skelton has surprisingly solid footwork and is mobile from within the pocket, but he's not the threat outside the pocket that Locker is. He should get more of a chance to pin his ears back this week.

"Not only is he a factor in rushing the passer, his run stopping may be even better. He is all over the place, even pursuing from behind. Stats don't show the whole story either, as he often helped stop a run without getting the tackle. He was a big part of Chris Johnson being held to just 4 yards and shutting out the Titans run game. "

So true, Chandler holds that edge stiff, forcing the run plays inside to the pursuring backers and DT's. I forget the play where CJ2K got blown up by Love, CJ2K literally stopped suddenly after he ran into Love, he literally stopped right there, no movement, nothing. All of that was forced by
"The Condor".

"The Condor" - Long (6'6"), Lean in the waist, "Thick" where needed, upper hips, ass. Perfect arm thickness to accentuate the endless wing-span reach. The age of the "The Condor" is just starting to cast it's shadow on the NFL. I'm sure Rex crapped himself when he clicked on the ESPN/NBC Sunday night Pats/Titans highlights.

People seem to finally be realizing how smart this kid is about his responsibilities. Athleticism and talent only go so far. I remember reading ad nauseum how raw he was coming out of college and how he'd be a project and blah blah. I never bothered to read into any of it, as I always felt it was one person just rehashing what they read or heard from another person. The kid has smarts to go with the talent, and he's not done developing by a long shot.

I suspect and hope that in time he will make the JPP comparisons hold true. I still don't believe he's the freakish athlete that JPP is, but he comes close. I think that he will become a smarter football player than JPP, though. He'll develop an awareness of game situations and play recognition that I don't believe JPP has shown thus far (granted I don't watch every Giants game). He definitely has the very bright future and, with BB's tutelage, he could become the very best at his position.

I thought the closing speed shown by Jones on his strip sack of Locker was incredible. The sky would seem to be the limit with this kid. :rocker:

Love what I've seen from Chandler Jones so far. He definitely has a ton of upside and basically forced BB to start him with his impressive play from the very beginning of camp and throughout preaseason. For Jones to do this well against a premier tackle like the Titan's Roos... well I feel bad for the NFL average tackles that will have to face him because I predict him going off in those games.

Sooner or later teams will have to start gameplanning for Jones. That is when he is going to see a lot of double teams and will be a true test of the rookie. How will he deal with the frustration of being doubled on almost every play? The good news is that will free up someone else on the front 7 to make a play.

And that's the playmaker the Patriots have lacked for many years now. That's what has frustrated fans for so long in the draft . . . players that we all thought would command this kind of attention and game planning being passed on over and over by BB. This year, he traded up twice for players that he knew would be playmakers and also fit his system. We have the studs now and the right coach for them.

On a somewhat related note, I literally just finished watching SB36 and Will Mac was doubled pretty much the whole game . . . just sayin' . . .

Doubling up on Jones means you single cover Wilfork (equals happy Wilfork). Double cover both and now you are just about out of blockers. I love the potential of this defense.

Super Homer Alert: Based off of Jones's play vs. Bushrod and Roos, he will break the rookie sack record.

Profootball Weekly has him as the #1 defensive player on their rookie of the year meter (4th overall for all rookies:

ProFootballWeekly.com - Rookie Meter: RG3 steals the show to move ahead of Luck

The one thing I'll say is that it sucks that these kinds of things are always more skewed to favor offensive players because they put up more statistical numbers than defensive players. I feel his overall performance and the impact that Jones had on the game was far superior to that of Luck. I know Luck was the first pick and touches the ball on every snap and all that, but I feel Jones' play was a huge reason for why the overall defense looked so much more improved and tenacious than in years past. If anything, my top four would look like this:

1. RG3
2. Doug Martin (the guy really did ball out)
3. Chandler Jones (the guy really did ball out - tee hee)
4. Andrew Luck (he put up a lot of yards passing, but he was sacked three times and threw three INTs)

Also, Blackmon should not be in the top ten at all. His play was not nearly impressive, with the young WR only catching three passes. His better days are ahead of him, as he is too talented not to be a force later on (if Blaine can get him the ball). However, Hightower was all over the field and played in many different positions. He was heads up enough to grab the fumble and run it in as well. Again, this is a case of the list being skewed in favor of offensive players. Hightower had a much bigger impact on the game than Blackmon did for Jacksonville. He should have made the list, IMO.

Lastly, I know we all hate the Jets, but Stephen Hill should have been way ahead of Blackmon and Trent Richardson. I know they were drafted way ahead of him and all, but c'mon, that kid out performed both of them by a mile and a half.
