This is not much more than the "normal" $5M cushion for monies that might be needed during the year. If the money isn't needed, the money could be used for extensions or simply carried over into 2013, giving us more cap flexibility.

The Pats number looks pretty good, nice cushion with some likely to be rolled over next year. With injury replacements plus all the practice squad movement they probably use a chunk of it. Patriots tend to overpay guys to stay on the practice squad for most of the year as well. All that combined probably adds up pretty quickly.

I dont think that has anything to do with it. Teams are trying to hold onto as much cap room as possible to make up for the losses football operations had to deal with when the new CBA rolled the salary cap back so much. I would think the only notable free agent your team has next season is Kyle Arrington, whose value skyrocketed because of the Webb and McCourty contracts, so there may be a thought of bringing him back (though that has not been the Belichick way). Most likely I would think you use the rollover to go into next year with 24 million or so in cap room to sign 16 "good" free agents and pay 4 higher draft picks to fill out the roster.

Not necessarily. Guys like Branch and Gaffney at vet min still take close to a million per off the top, so they won't be rushing to sign either unless forced to due to injury or all existing options not panning out as envisioned. Same deal with Waters unless OL struggles or injuries persist, although who knows if he's even available anymore.

Most teams want to carry over enough to offset the flat cap. $5-6M or so. In season deals with our own impending FA would balance out any tradeoff rollover wise. Just a couple of candidates though due to nagging injury histories and/or potential market value at position. Those guys would have to agree to a really flexible and friendly deal to get one prior to next spring. Guys like Woody and Edleman would be the most likely/easy extension targets depending on how their season unfolds. Brace and Chung depending on performance and health. Vollmer at the very tail end of the season if he's holding up. No one will trust his back as much as we do, if we do. Arrington probably waits for the market at his position. And Brace might if he finally emerges.

If they get a restructure done early enough in the off season on Brady they could clear another several million plus and be looking at $30M+ in cap space for 2013. Which should be sufficient enough to retain a similar cushion for 2014 depending on how many gaps we have to fill based on 2012 health and performance. OL, WR and secondary could be targets they have to spend on pending what they draft or extend from within.
