Thankfully, I think that thread can officially die now. Letting Vinatieri go clearly didn't cost the Pats this game.

Gostkowski gave us a bumpy first few weeks, but, all in all, he's a keeper.

I was very happy that the Vinitraitor didn't come into play here. I was sick and tired of hearing about him this past week. Great game by Steven, and a much better Rookie season than Adam's was, I might add!!!

He would've been one of the storylines if the Pats had managed to pull it out. Very proud of him, he made some huge kicks in the playoffs, and he definitely proved himself.

Gostkowski came very close to being the hero. Put us up 34-31. Drilled the next kickoff deep into the endzone for a touchback. Pinned them at the 20. We get a 3 and out. Run the clock out..oops..well we know what happened.

ESPN couldn't help itself and brought up having AV as a factor after the game. The kickers clearly offset each other they need to let it go.

I don't think Gostkowski missed a FG in the playoffs, he is a keeper.

Well, they were actually about even, but given the shoes he had to fill, I give the edge to Gostkowski. [OTOH, my memory's a bit hazy here . . . how did AV blow three PATs his rookie season?]

No, he didn't. See my sig. :)

No, it turned out to be letting Dan Klecko go ;)

PFnV

Gostkowski matched AV kick for kick. He definitely wasn't the problem tonight and he also helped our field position by getting a few touchbacks. Something AV is incapable of doing.

Blowing a 21-3 lead was bad enough, if it had been amplified by Gotti blowing it, that would have been a disaster. Gotti was excellent all post season and is clearly the long term answer.

no answer yet

we'll see next season or maybe the season after...

Yup it was a 4th round pick well spent. My beef is how we spent the OTHER 4th on Mills when we could have taken a little TE project named Marques Colston. :D Course that with hindsight being 20/20!

this team is built not for 2006 or even 2007

see how long we remain in the mix and the judge...

That would have been a bad pick as we could have had Colston in the 6th round instead of Mincey ;) The Mills pick looks bad - now - but we have other players (Chad Jackson) that are more important to step up. The Gotti pick looks good.

you missed a very important point....

by letting vinatieri go..it might not have cost you games...

but..it helped Colts a lot..he is one of the reason they are going to SB.

Vanderjerk/any other kicker would have missed some of FG's..

well said by a fan of the team that has a record tying kicker from Hawaii!

The ONLY consolation for me is that AV wasn't the difference maker in this game. Now THAT really would have hurt.

But that was never the main "point." Clearly Vinatieri helped the Colts, but it was always "oh no the Pats are doomed without Adam, whatever will they do, Gostkowski will choke, the Pats will never survive" ad nauseum.

They didn't miss him at all. The rookie came through big time.

every team makes difficult decisions

No team makes all the right ones, including the Pats

That's a nice saying for a fortune cookie but there's no reason to think this wasn't the right decision. We're better off with a low paid young leg than a highly paid older leg.
