Patriots fans reaction to a 'Giants' type season

After watching yesterdays game it got me thinking about how Patriots fans would react to that type of performance and result against a team that has little or no recent playoffs success.

The Giants O-line, like Patriots O-lines of the recent past, looks good at pass protection but struggles to open many decent running lanes - hence the anaemic NYG rushing stats of recent times ( I think they were 31 or 32 last year at toting the rock).

Both years they ended up winning the SB despite very average regular season efforts - kudos for getting hot at the right time etc, but I do wonder what sort of melt down would take place on this board should the Patriots lose 6 or 7 games during the regular season.

The threads I read regarding the O-line issues makes me wonder what planet some of these guys are on - do they use 2007 as a benchmark for Patriots performances - do they not realize plenty of other teams around the league don't have great players backing up their O-line?

Maybe we'll get to see, if the Patriots actually have the temerity to lose their opening game away to a pretty decent team.

If we were talking about the interior, I would say we have quality depth there. My issue is at the tackle position. We have NO depth there, compared to other teams. What are we down to, 2 1/2 tackles? One of which has cronic back problems.

With that said, If they lose their opener, I personally wouldnt panic. I have faith in BB to fix whats broken.

This is completely and utterly sour-grapes.. but go 9 and 7.. you shouldn't ever be considered the "best" team in the NFL.

That said, I'd trade our 2011 season for their 2011 season.

Besides BBs penchant for having emergency plans to the backup plans while others are still working on game plans for the next week; Dante is a large part of the reason Patsfans like I can sit here and just go .......

Oh and, I am not sure that anyone at the start of 2007 would have identified many of those guys who were 2/3 on depth chart as "great players". (Billy Yates, Ryan OCallaghan, Wesley Britt anyone?????) and Stephen Neal was still that wrestler experiment, Nick Kaczur and Russ Hochstein weren't pro-bowlers per se either.

That's the truth.

But, for the OP. I think Fan is a short form of Fanatic (though the 2 have different connotations now). And like all fans, you have some that are never happy and can always find a problem area. While that is a fine thing in our coaches to teach our players, they still get a chance to enjoy the victories.

and as someone noted above, the Giants haven't had much success during the regular season...they seem to be capable of taking it to another level during the post season, though not always.

I think most fans would be ok with a Giants type season... the years they win the Super Bowl. The problem is, living in the 8-8, 9-7, 10-6 range in the regular season means you might not even make the playoffs (two of the three years between the Giants last SB's, they didn't make the postseason).

If you gave me a team that was built to win playoff football, but told me there was like a 50% chance they were going to make the playoffs each year, I'm not sure I'd trade that for what we have here. Being a consistent contender is more interesting to me than squeaking in now and then and catching lightning in a bottle.

Despite only losing by 7 the Giants looked really awful last night, I guess we'll find out in the upcoming weeks if it was just a stinker or if they're really that bad.

Admittedly, Brady and Belichick have really spoiled me and each have my absolute gratitude for it.

I just feel like going 14-2, 16-0, 13-3, shattering offensive records, driving up the score, and honestly just really terrifying other fans across the league that nervously wait for game day when they have to play us, is who we are as a team. That's our New England Patriots now.

And i'm guilty as sin for loving every minute of it.

I love the confidence. I love the mentality. I love the swagger. I love that people get worried when their team has to play us. I love what must go through their heads when their worst fears come true and they're down by 30 points before the half.

I love how Belichick can absolutely dismantle another team, totally humiliating them, and then say nothing at the podium after.

When the sun sets on New England football (temporarily) and we have to go back to struggling for every yard and every post season appearance, i'll be there.

But for now... a Giants season? No thanks. I like total domination.

In fairness here, the Patriots have set the bar. If they aren't reaching it, that's a legitimate reason for concern, or at least for some questioning and analysis. We judge sports teams with weighted grades, after all, as we should. Without that, we'd all be pink hats.

Couldn't agree with you more. We have a certain identity in the NFL. We are widely viewed as the "model franchise" and on top of that we contend nearly every year, while boasting the best quarterback in the game, and we have one of the youngest teams in the league! (25.8 average)
I'd take that over what the Giants have any day. And I'll still be here as well, in the twilight of Brady's career. But who knows? People thought last year was going to mark the beginning of the end for Brady. But then he goes and marches straight to the Superbowl at 34 years young. I love every minute of being a fan of the New England football Patriots, and there's no other team in the NFL like them. Truly unique, we have star players (Gronk, Welker, Brady) and quiet leaders alike (Mayo, Wilfork). They are truly the only team in the NFL that deserves to be rooted for because they are simply the best. No matter what the final score is or what the beat-writers think; the Patriots will always be number one in my book. That's not saying much in the big picture, but know that this fan's never going away.

I think the fact that the Giants play in a pretty tough division makes them tested come playoff time. For them it's really a matter of getting to the playoffs.

For the Pats in recent years we really haven't been tested in our own division, and only from a few other AFC teams (Steelers, Ravens, Colts). Look at last year, some of our toughest games came from NFC teams like the Cowboys and Giants, not from within our own division. Come playoff time we had a cakewalk game with the Broncos and didn't have our 1st real test until the AFC championship, which we didn't really play very well in.

In the Super Bowl winning years we were pretty battle tested by the time we got to the Super Bowl, not so much in recent years. If we were tested more in the regular season I think we'd be better prepared for the tough matchups come playoff time.

I'm not disagreeing with you Deus mainly because the Patriots have provided such a high standard of play that anything less is deemed inadequate. I find it interesting that a tight win against good opposition isn't necessarily viewed the same as a blow out win against OK opposition.

In my book winning is winning.

Depending on how the season goes I wonder if BB might actually risk some losses to rest key players. I'd rather storm into the playoffs with a 5 losses than to limp into them with 1 or 2.

The Patriots play the Jets, Bills, Dolphins twice a year.

When was the last time the Bills had a winning record in the regular season?

The Pats were battled tested last year regardless how many peeps want to see it. The problem was every team who were suppose to be " good" imploded at the end of the season or have significant injuries that killed their SOS.
