Greg Salas 2008 2010 Hawaii Warriors - YouTube

I was just looking at some tape on greg salas from Hawaii and the kid looks good. Before everyone says but thats college and not the NFL, yea duh. But if he can at all translate the way he played in college to the nfl, he could really become a staple of this offense. He has good speed and hands. He's also pretty hard to bring down and always goes for the extra yard. Again i know that players in the nfl will tackle better than those at the college level but the potential of this kid can hopefully be unveiled with the patriots... Happy to have the kid on board.

As a Hawaii alum and fan, I've been following Salas for awhile and knew that he had NFL talent. Really hoping to see him stick around and flourish with the Pats.

I watched his Rams highlights and some were comparing him to AH. I just don't see it. There's nothing that sticks out to me about that guy other than the fact that he seems to have reliable hands for a young guy. Plus like 90% of the snaps he saw in that Rams offense are plays for Welker/AH in ours so i'm not sure where he is going to fit in and on the Rams board they were saying that he can't play outside.

I've seen some pundits say he played a mixture of both and is fully capable...but the sample size isn't massive so we don't really know. He has the size to play outside...but he hasn't got 4.3 speed. He can make up fr that if he runs crisp routes though.

He has a good 3-cone...surprise surprise

He's a 4th rounder chosen personally by Josh who looked good before he was injured in his rookie year. What's not to like.

We have doesn't well with young receivers. Perhaps it is choice of players; perhaps it is coaching. In any case, Salas has an advantage. For now, he is our #4 behind Edelman in the depth chart. In any case, he seems at least as good a prospect as Price was. After all, Salas has actually caught a few passes in the nfl and has played for Josh.

One would think he might even be 5 behind Slater too. I know no one likes to think of Slater as a WR but the fact remains he is probably our fastest player, has received snaps for us in the past (with limited attempts actually going his way), looked decent in training camp this year though his speed has alot to do with that, and more importantly is an outside the numbers presance.

I am not trying to say that Slater is all the sudden going to be a key WR for us but so long as he is our best STer and taking a roster spot they will continue to develope him as a WR.

Whether the receiver is young or old, a star or a washout, we've seen that when they come to the Patriots, past performance is no guarantee of future rewards. It's all about how they connect with Brady.

We all remember the failed experiments, but the effect can work in a positive direction, too. Remember that Gaffney was originally signed off the mid-season scrap heap. And of course there was no way Miami was going to match the Pats' offer sheet for a guy like Wes Welker, who was a nice little player but no big deal.

So for Salas...I like his hands, size and body control, am dubious about his speed, and ultimately have no clue whatsoever.

Yea the rams are so loaded with receivers they gave him away for a 2015
draft pick.

They got him for something like a 140th round pick in the year 2312. He could be cut next week, and it will barely register. With that small a downside, it's a good move. I'm not sure looking at college film means much at this point, though.

No way this kid can help, forget his 3 cone time he ran a 4.71 40, he's clearly a bust.

Oh wait, that was Jerry Rice, my mistake.

If Salas busts his ass he can turn into a good player for the Patriots.

You know, I keep reading Hernandez & Welker comparisons, but I wonder if we're using the wrong Patriots comp.

6'1 with a solid build, reliable hands, excellent body control, borderline downfield speed...

Isn't that Jabar Gaffney?

Playing with Tom Brady - Yea, I'll go out on a limb and say, Yes...His future could be bright.

Last night's game, with Ogletree showing up so huge, clarifies just how important a #3 WR can be. If it's the right #3.

He was often matched up against Tryon, who had a terrible day. The same mismatches can be created using our TE options. The 3rd and 4th OPTIONS are important. The 3rd and 4th WR importance depends on your system.

Here's my take, for what it's worth.

The NFL has more college style offenses than ever before, for whatever reason. Triple/Double option (Panthers); Pure Spread (Rams); a poor man's version of the Air Raid (49ers); Pistol Offense (Bills); Run and Shoot variant (Saints); Run and Shoot/Spread Option variant (us)......there's plenty out there.

That means it's easier for College receivers to pick up the Playbook and contribute sooner. Salas was brought up in the Run and Shoot at Hawaii, and has had a couple of years to also learn what a Pro-Style offense is all about.

We gave up virtually nothing for him, but he has a decent chance to make a success of himself. He knows a good portion of the offense, and he knows how to catch the ball. Good luck to him.

Slaters 3 or Salas is 3?

I admittadly do not know much about Salas but what I read he is more of slot guy. So if you are saying Salas is 3 I assume your putting him ahead of Edelman as the top slot back up and then also assuming our slot back up is better then the one guy we have who can back up outside the numbers?

Now that's just over thinking it. Not...a...chance.

I dont think I am over thinking it. If Lloyd goes down and we want to run a go route who you going with Edelman, Salas, or Slater?

Not comparing him to Brown but lets face it Brown would have never become Brown if he didnt stick around so long as a STer. To think that now after 4 or 5 years that Slater may have learned enough as a WR to be a back up is not overthinking it. And to say that he is ahead of a bunch of slot receivers outside the numbers is overthinking it?

Ogletree lookd very good last night his route running was superb. The Cowbows lost Laurent Robinson and replaced him with Ogletree. The Cowboys know how to plug em in. Wish we had a WR in the wings like Ogletree.

He's referring to Salas as the possible #3 and I'm in agreement.

Slater is rarely used. We will utilise us speed once every so often with play action (we like to have him in on successive run plays and then try one deep) but it isn't used very often. Once in a blue moon. Only time it worked was against Miami in week one last season I think it was.

I think if the Pats agreed he'd done enough to develop he would have got reps in preseason. I don think he got many (if any at all).

We also overrate Edelman.

Salas is a guy who can pay outside. Make no doubt about it given his size.
