Former Eagles backup quarterback Mike Kafka was among the biggest names to clear waivers following Friday’s final cuts. Despite the fact that Kafka was due minimum base salaries in 2012 and 2013, no team deemed him worthy of a claim after he was waived by Philly.

But there is still some interest in Kafka around the league, and the New England Patriots are one of the teams that is at least somewhat intrigued by him.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Patriots worked out Kafka on Tuesday.

Kafka has practice squad eligibility and could land there in Foxboro. The only two quarterbacks the Patriots kept on their final 53-man roster were Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett.

Kafka is basically Hoyer with PS eligibility minus the system experience and possibly a little less arm. All of his experience is in a WCO. Only started one season at Northwestern. But supposedly accurate in the short to intermediate range, good decision maker and a smart game manager... Although in his brief regular season appearances (2) in Philly while throwing for a 68% overall completion rate he had no TD's and 2 picks...in mop up.

They aren't looking for a #3, they're looking for an emergency QB and developmental player for the PS. Hoyer was mostly about the money, and to some extent the remaining perception of Mallett. I think if there were a vet worth having they'd sacrifice the roster spot and call him a mentor, but there isn't anyone out there remotely capable of running this offense.

Nope, if Hoyer was getting the minimum like Kafka was getting he'd probably still be here.

Kafka is no upgrade.

I saw him play for Northwestern. He was absolutely terrific. He'd make a great addition to the practice squad and I think he has a lot of upside.

But I think Hoyers Release meant he hit his ceiling and with the money due and roster spots needed he became expendable.

Kafka has PS elegibility where Hoyer does not and his ceiling could be higher than Hoyers.

I would think it to be a great signing to get a player like Kafka on the PS but I wouldn't be surprised if he found a team willing to put him on the 53.

I'm with you. As starting QBs go, Kafka is :scared:

But as practice squad QBs go, he's very good indeed.

He can be put on the PS
His cap hit is minor
He is not intended as a serious candidate for later in decade Pats starter

He made it through waivers on a minimum salary remaining deal. He was supposed to be the #2 and probably Reid's next suckers bet, nobody claimed him. Broke his non throwing hand in pre season and that opened the door for Foles to take the #2 and for Edwards to hang on as #3.

This is a smart kid who is good enought to be worth the investment to pay him a regular roster wage to keep him on the PS for the full season. Then next year he's a bargaining chip. We certainly don't need 2 FBs on PS, and we desperately are looking for a 3rd arm for practicing. Kafka is probably better right now than most of the #3 QB holding roster spots.

If we are willing to pay him a couple of hundred thousand, it would be worth it to him to spend a year learning from this coaching staff.

That said, Jeff Howe who originally put the word out Kafka was PS eligible just tweeted that he rechecked and found out he was active for 9 games and therefore isn't.
