I think this needs a thread of its own, because as of today the regular season begins. By Wednesday the game plan starts to be installed and its time for all hands to be on deck. Up to this point most of us have pretty much assumed that Waters return was a done deal. We inferred. We surmised. We assumed. We read tea leaves. Now its put up or shut up time. Its no longer time for guess work. We need answers

So BB, "no comment" is not going to cut it going forward. We need to know what the status of Brian Waters is, and when, if ever, he is going to return to the team. I mean, even if he showed up today, I doubt he'd be more than injury sub for this first week. But in the long run that doesn't mean much.

BTW- If the mods think this is redundant....dump it

I think it's safe to say he won't play Week 1.

Beyond that, it's almost irrelevant in that he's not on the roster taking up a roster spot.

We'll play with or without him. It's up to him if he wants to play. But if he plays it's with us unless he helps us recoup one or two of the mid to late draft picks we're currently missing for 2013.

Hightower get jersey number 54. That was Waters'.
Is this the writing on the wall?

New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Seeing that # 53, 56, 57, and 59 are also available, one can't think that there isn't a message in this, although I can understand why nobody would want to wear #59 for a while.

None of those numbers in the 50's are available

56 & 57 are retired. 59 is Mike Rivera, 53 is Jeff Tarpinian

for us older gents the name of this thread is bittersweet.

Damn you prostate.

Waters Watch...

Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' come
Watching the ships roll in
And then I watch 'em roll away again, yeah

I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time.

Agreed, and as we know so well, BB will break the news when he's ready. I get the feeling he'd like to see Waters in Foxboro NLT today and is likely waiting for this to become a closed issue. I also get the feeling that we may be able to start singing, "The Party's Over" for Brian.

The off-season including the draft, free agency and training camp before the cuts had this 2007 feeling and that was with the offense going through the motions in the pre-season games. The team just felt loaded. All these cuts and Waters not coming in leaves me with more of a 2003 feeling. Yes they can still obviously come together and win the Super Bowl but everything feels so much more fragmented than it did.

I'm not jumping to any conclusions positive or negative. We won't really know what we have until after Thanksgiving just like Bill always says.

All that said I'd feel a hell of a lot better if Waters reported.

Maybe he'll do a Seau and come back mid season.

Waters watch is over folks...next man up for the year

Lloyd might not be getting as many deeps balls as we once thought if brady doesn't have a lot of time back there. But the line will mesh and get better

Beginning to feel a bit like maybe we've all been rope-a-doped all spring and summer. He says ask Bill, Bill says ask him or no comment. Media note delivery to his locker, are told not to report on locker contents. Then contents disappear. It must be about the money because if he wanted to retire he'd have done so by now. If they were going to cut him, they'd have done so by now.

It makes no sense for Waters not to report before 4PM tomorrow because unless he does his salary isn't guaranteed. I know last season he wasn't signed until the 5th, but we didn't play until the 12th. That's a week. And it wasn't ideal, it was what it was. We're now 5 days or 2 practices, one walkthrough and a plane flight on Saturday away from the week 1 open.

I'm generally all in on Bill's need to know policy. This is just ridiculous and taking it to an extreme for no reason I can fathom.

I would rather have a repeat of 2003 than 2007.

Yes, the watch is officially over if he doesn't report by 4PM tomorrow.

Would happily take a 3rd for him for next year. If he does't want to come back let him rot until a deal is made.

 How are you going to get a 3rd for him... He's a 35 year old guard. He's either coming back here or he's not. He was a FA for a reason last season. He's a PITA albeit still worth something in this system particularly playing on an otherwise above average OL. If he were a FA someone would probably overpay for him based on that, but in cash not draft capital. And since this team owns his rights they aren't going to just surrender them. If it turns out this was all about the $$$, then shame on them for not working something out. Especially considering all the bonus money they threw around this off season that guys are now using to pound the pavement for vet. min. jobs elsewhere.

Assuming the issue is that he suddenly this year insists on playing in Texas closer to home, were I the Pats I'd hold out for a late round 2013 pick for his services with the Cows. Wouldn't want to trade him to AFC contender Houston but what are our constructive alternatives if this is the case?

It could be that the Texas teams "somehow" know this and maybe are waiting past game one so they don't have to guarantee his contract as he's an older player whose football readiness would not be easily determined.
