Why is Waters being silent on this? is he still debating?

FWIW, Waters came to NE 8 days prior to the season opener and had a pro bowl season.

Yeah I was aware of that and I hope he does the same this year. I'm just trying to understand the point of keeping it a secret.

And if all he wanted to do was skip the rigors of camp wouldn't he be in tow now that camp is over?

This whole Waters issue has "retirement holdout" written all over it. Which in all fairness would be understandable, becouse Waters deserves a payrise based on last years performance.

So if I'm correct, then either:
A) They are trying to work it out / clear cap space
or
B) We are going into the season without him trying to see if we can manage without him while Waters is waiting for a phone call

I read via its agent that the locker has agreed to appear on "Dancing with the Stars" this season and has landed a Head and Shoulders endorsement deal.

if he's "contemplating retirement" instead of just sitting out preseason then Bellichick doesn't have to tell other players that certain guys get to skip it. It might even be unspoken between them where BB knows he'll probably come back and Waters knows that if he says he's contemplating retirement instead of just sitting out then he will get a pass since he's a valuable addition to the roster at any point he wants.

its not a simple retirement....if it was, it would have happened a long time ago

I guess it is possible that it is some kind of holdout, but if it was, and the team wanted him around, I am sure they would have sweetened the pot for him

whatever it is, I doubt it is someone playing games.

regardless, the season will go on, and if pass protection becomes an issue, the pats have smart coaches and a smart QB that will produce a gameplan that will mitigate the problem. the pats have plenty of short route guys.

I do like Cannon's long term prospects as an RG......he is prototypical for the position. the right side will grade the road

Wonder if BB made a deal -- skip all of training camp, but then you have to skip the first week so we can protect ourselves re: fully guaranteed contracts. So, back after week one?

I heard some talking heads say the same thing. That's certainly plausible but if that's been figured out by you and others then you'd think the players have figured that out too.

I guess the next step is he'll be placed on the retired list. Shame if so because the OL goes from good to great with him in there. I'd like to see what Cannon can do at RG. His weakness is his foot quickness from what I can tell. When he got beat at RT, it was generally to the outside and the pass rusher typically used his speed. That should be less of a problem with a shift to RG.

Thats kinda what I m thinking Pats give him a pay raise but make sure it's not guarnteed. Hopefully he need him.

I wish BB would just throw a few million more $s at him and get him here ASAP.

if it was like that, richard seymour would still be here.....

Seymour wanted more than a few million, he would have wanted a long-term deal, with Waters it'd simply be getting him to show up this year to keep TFB upright, hopefully we can get the O-line fixed up by that point.

I doubt the players are thinking too hard about it, and unless he tells them straight up that he was never actually contemplating retiring then there's always some ambiguity there. Plus there's virtually no one else in his position. Light could have pulled it off I guess, but anyone who isn't a probowl OL would need preseason to get ready/learn new wrinkles or wouldn't be secured a spot.

Much overdue.

There was a time when the holdout wasnt entertained. A 'no show' in camp was just that...you state your intent by your actions.

The second in line has to always be ready. The day of the huge ego is long over. It will hurt a club in the end rather than help it. Also, it doesnt favor the player well either...financially or resume-wise.

:rocker:

Inb4 someone responds to this with something along the lines of...

"But Belichick says his best fit is at right tackle! If he was any good at right guard, Belichick would know it! I can't believe you have opinions independent of the coaching staff!"

The one bright side I see about Cannon at RT is a lot of it just looks like bad fundamentals. When he gets beat it's almost always with his center of gravity way too high and him not getting low enough. I still say try him at RG. Hopefully Waters is still coming back, but a potential line of Solder-Mankins-Connolly-Cannon-Vollmer means they've completely rebuilt the line and are set up for the next several years.

If you're a pro bowl caliber Guard with 12 years of service time in the NFL I can't think of a better financial or career decision than limiting the toll unnecessary contact will take on your body.

I really doubt it....why would they have to cut Waters midseason? They aren't close to the cap.

So be it then. Have the formal decency to announce your retirement ot your teammates. club and fans.

Very selfish, inconsiderate and egotistical if he went out like that, TPoole.
