Our active 46 man roster is the best in the nfl. The question is how prepared we are if Play X or Player Y is out for 4-6 weeks.

Presuming Waters shows up, our inactive roster will likely consist of Boldin, Forston, Francis, McDonald, Rivera and Thomas.

Absent injury, we are by far the best team in the nil, with only Green Bay as a competitor for roster quality (as was the case in 2011). We are better than in 2011 on defense and as good on offense (lose Light, pick up Lloyd).

So, for me, the focus is now on our rosters in case of injury. Obviously, signing a veteran backup WR stands out as a priority. A veteran backup RB could be an upgrade. A backup OT is needed.

As with the above six players, we shouldn't be looking to sign any players that we expect to be active, except perhaps a kick returner.

Word on the street is that Josh is still intent on utilizing a FB. And if he signs one he can't utilize him unless he's active.

Given the success rate of assimilation for veteran WR's, not sure what the value of adding one even for inactive depth will be.

Expect one of the 6 CBs to be inactive. Most likely Dennard.
Which would open up a space to put a FB in.

Also, there is a chance that Shiancoe is the one who is going to get the IR Exception, which could mean another player as well.

I have speculated upon the following defensive positional breakdown of the 46 man roster:

DE - 4 (Jones, Ninkovich, Cunningham, Scott)
DT - 4 (Wilfork, Love, Brace, Deaderick)
LB - 6 (Mayo, Spikes, Hightower, Carpenter, Rivera, White)
S - 4 (Chung, Gregory, Ebner, Wilson)
CB - 4 (McCourty, Dowling, Arrington, Cole)

Minimum - 22 Defensive Players

Thus, the following defensive players would be game day inactives:

Forston
Francis
Bequette
Moore
Dennard

From my perspective, six defensive ends seems like overkill on the 53 man roster.

How should the roster spots be allocated then?

53-man roster minus three specialists equals 50 players; 25 on offense and 25 on defense.

Take your starting eleven on D plus a backup for each, that's 22. Two extra defensive backs equals 24.

One last spot for somewhere on the defensive line (in this case DE).

With the recent addition of Greg Salas, wide receiver from Hawaii, five wide receivers should be sufficient in the near term at the expense of a defensive end.

24 Offense, 26 Defense since the New England Patriots only have two quarterbacks currently on the 53 man roster.

Depends on how you measure excellence?

If its purely through skill and talent, then I would rank us 4th behind Packers, 49ers and Eagles. I could even rank Eagles above 49ers if Foley was their starting QB and is really as good as people seem to think he is.

But if we account for overall coaching, then #1 is a toss up between us and the Packers.

We just traded a late-round pick for the Rams' Greg Salas... Depth at WR we badly need. Plus a big body, also something we lack at WR. Not gonna burn anybody and not big enough to create large mismatches but will hopefully be a good back up in case Welker or Lloyd or even Edelman goes down.
