He could have been designated to return in 8 weeks.

I guess that leg injury was worse than the unoffical silence that came out of Foxboro.

Mike Reiss seemed to think that Demps was fine. Another head scratcher.

Demps isn't injured. He's just being stashed away so he can learn more and they'll try him out for next year.

noooooooooo. Guess its back to edelman reruning kicks:(

Isn't "Lacking 15 pounds of muscle" an injury?

He needs to learn the Playbook :D

I seriously doubt Demps is injured.....this appears to be a method of stashing a player in development for use and practice in the next season.

Its not like Demps was here all training camp...Demps is as green as they come and no way was he ready for the big leagues so quickly IMO.

A move that dissapoints us because we wanted a special talent on kick retunrs, but its definately for the best of the team and for the maturation of Demps to become closer affiliated with the team down the road where he has more time to learn.

I think he'll be back week 8. When everyone is bruised and tired, he'll be fresh and know more of the playbook.

So keeping a Rivera for ST was worth putting Demps on IR and losing out on him exploding on KR and spot duty out the backfield ? I don't buy it. Bedard was saying that Demps just has a knee bruise and might have been out a couple of weeks max.

It makes no sense to have the player sit out a year unecessarily and ****** his development in order to keep as many as 5 other players who wont be here by 10/1
Please give me one single example of BB placing a player on IR in pretense that turned out to be a developmental move. (and Kingsbury is not a valid example)

I second this

Now that is a reasonable point. Out 'a couple of weeks' which could turn into 4, 6, 8 for a guy who will only return kicks becomes a reason to IR.
The severity of injury to Tom Brady vs Justin Francis makes for a different decision whether IR is appropriate.

I'm pissed we won't see this kid on at least punt returns until at least Week 8.

As soon as I heard the news, this story popped into my head....

"Basically, the Patriots would put a player on IR, knowing it meant he couldn't play in a game or practice with the team for the remainder of the season. By skirting the rules and practicing him anyway, it allowed them to develop his skills during the year. A side benefit is that they were also able to give some of the older players less repetitions and, therefore, additional rest."

Tucker agrees with Walsh: Patriots practiced with IR players

Belichick has done crazier things before, perhaps he simply does not think Demps is ready yet and chose to wait.

If any man can ever figure out what goes on inside of Belichick's head,I want to meet this genius.

Are you sure about that? I trust Reiss as much as anyone, but he's been wrong before. That injury didn't look minor to me. He could've easily torn some ligaments on that play. Brady walked off the field after his torn ACL IIRC

He told reporters after the game he was fine.

Rivera isn't a ST stud though. Hasn't played on more than two units all preseason. Both Tarpinian and Koutouvides received far more ST playing time.

They must like him more in the base than the other options. Or he has some unique ST skill that has hitherto gone unnoticed by the public.
