NFL and NFLPA have AGREED to change IR rule and move trade deadline

Albert Breer‏@AlbertBreer

NFL and NFLPA have agreed to move trade deadline, amend injured reserve rules. More coming.

This could be helpful.

Re: NFL and NFLPA have AGREED to change IR rule and move trade deadline

Trade deadline not such a big deal, but the IR one is huge. Each team will each be allowed to bring back ONE player during the year.

Any bets to who we take off IR?

Re: NFL and NFLPA have AGREED to change IR rule and move trade deadline

August 30, 2012:Only players with a "major injury" who are placed on Reserve/Injured after 4:00 p.m., New York time, on Tuesday, September 4, or thereafter during the season, will be eligible to be reactivated at a later time.

Will be interesting to see what constitutes a major injury.

We can't, no grandfather clause from the looks of it.

None; only applies to players designated on September 4 or later.

NFLPA approves new IR rule and later trade deadline :All Things Pats

With the Patriots having already placed some players on IR, the big question for many Pats fans is whether or not this will be retroactive – and the answer is no. Only players with a “major injury” who are placed on Reserve/Injured after 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4th (or thereafter) will be eligible to be reactivated at a later time. No word yet on what the definition of a major injury is and what would or would not meet that criteria. There will be a limit of one player per team that this new rule can be applied to each season.

About freakin' time!!!!!.

Both sides should be b!tched slapped for their mutual sophomoric attitudes and childish behavior. Their unprofessional need to "win" every issue, is keeping them realizing the opportunities that are there for gains by both their respective constituencies.

NFLPA approves new IR rule and later trade deadline
By: John Morgan

Per Adam Schefter the NFL Player's Association has just approved the new Injured Reserve rule. This had been approved by the NFL owners some time ago but was initially rejected by the NFLPA due to some other unrelated conditions ('pork', for those of you ...

hopefully, the NFLPA said "ok, if you get us the real refs back"

Thanks for the link

I'm thrilled his got put through. It will help the overall product quality of the NFL.

Apparently the league didn't get any changes to the # of padded practices rules but they did get the change to the 3 day rule prohibiting padded practices no longer applying to players signed during camp.

So, as mentioned elsewhere, the owners were looking for give backs.

So then Ballard would qualify since he is currently on PUP, assuming that we IR him after 9/4?

Yes, but PUP doesn't count against the 53 anyways, so it's arguable whether this would be an improvement in his specific case.

Makes little sense to use this on a PUP guy. They can go as late as week 9 until they need to start practicing and week 12 until they need to be activated off PUP (or placed on IR). So Ballard can stay off the roster for 12 weeks anyway. This rule would only apply if the Pats didn't use the IR exemption on someone else before week 12 and Ballard was expected to be ready after week 12 (but before the playoffs). Given that short window, I think it is more likely they use this on someone that gets hurt week 1 or after.

Good move by all.. this is a good step.

Each side almost always is. What is also apparent is they weren't tied together, there were a number of seperate issues they were looking at and three got changed while one didn't.

I agree, I think that since there is only one designation that the Pats would be better off applying this to someone else. From what I have read Ballard's injury was quite severe and was not expected to be able to play this year. In addition with (at least) three tight ends on the roster that can play, I would think there are/will be other positions of greater need.

It would have been nice to have had this last year to us on any one of several players (e.g., Dowling, Vollmer, Koppen).

I would think Nick McDonald would be a good candidate for an IR return since he is expected to miss, at least, the first two weeks.

It would also help to IR him with the current roster crunch.
