Jets trading RT Wayne Hunter for RT Jason Smith of the Rams

Love Rotoworld's write up Smith:

ESPN New York reports the Jets are on the verge of acquiring Rams RT Jason Smith, and that benched RT Wayne Hunter will head to St. Louis as part of the deal.

From one turnstile to another. Like Hunter, Smith has been benched in St. Louis, and is on the roster bubble. The No. 2 pick of the 2009 draft would push undrafted free agent Austin Howard in New York, and likely become a part of the starting lineup at some point early in the year. Plagued by concussions, Smith has appeared in just 29 games in three years, and been a revolving door when he's in the lineup. He wouldn't be a major upgrade for the Jets' embattled offense. Hunter would back-up Barry Richardson in St. Louis.

and being a backup for Richardson is not going to sit well with Hunter.

Evan Silva:
Jason Smith trade is humorous. #Jets are gonna need to get a GM who knows something about football. No chance he's actually seen Smith play.

OMG, what a hilarious trade. Football historians, can you ever remember a 1-for-1 trade of players at the same position? Ever?

There are also reports that the Jets have traded Mark Sanchez to themselves for Tim Tebow, straight up. :D

Anybody think Tannenbaum has been watching one episode too many of "Wife Swap"?

At least the premise of Wife Swap was that the wives actually had different points of view. . . .

Aaron Hernandez put it best referring to his contract extension with the Pats:

"I couldn't be with a better franchise. The whole organization is actually an organization. A lot of places are called organizations, but are they really organized?"

Made me think of the Jets right away. There's a lot of disorganization at work there, and this seems like just the latest example.

Didn't the Jets trade for Laveranues Coles with Santana Moss....

...after the guy already left their team for Washington?

Ah, right! But IIRC that trade was largely about contract disputes, not mutual suckitude.

There are no winners here only losers.

Is it possible that they just downgraded from Hunter? Hunter sucks, but at least he plays.

The signs are all there including the sliding W/L records.

Rex needs to go be a great DC somewhere. Peter Principle strikes again.

Ditto!! I've been saying that for years. The guys a dope...Really!!!

How Ocho and T.O. aren't on this team befuddles me. :confused3:

It's a perfect Rat trade. Even if Jason Smith turns out worse than Wayne Hunter he is a shiny "name", the former #2 pick in the entire draft.

If you can't win the SB, you can at least "win" in your own delusional world, where average pedigree of a player trumps actual performance.

"We Rats have THREE #1 picks in our OL, how many do the Patsies have?"

Last straw? Unruly fans got on Hunter late in last night's game; he was restrained by Ducasse, according to source.

On a serious note, this should be yet another reality check for anybody calling for the Pats to trade for a Cannon upgrade or just "sign a veteran swing tackle." There are multiple teams already out beating the bushes for anything that vaguely resembles an OT.
