Im a big Gerard Warren fan... and with Fanene being cut due to injuries I thought Warren might make it.

Our defense always seems to get better when he's in there.

Warren will likely be back mid season. Unless he gets a very generous offer from another team he'll be on the shadow roster until someone on the line gets hurt.

Will Allen must be a really good locker room presence who can mentor the young CB otherwise I can't think of why we IR'ed him when he likely is retiring at years end and was a on a 1yr contract.

I think people overrate Gerard Warren here. He can provide an occasional pass rush but he's weak against the run. I'm hoping Brace, Forston, and/or Harrison can provide an improvement.

If WR feels thin now, let's hope Welker doesn't get traded. Still a 50/50 prop, in my book.

Huh?!? Welker is not getting traded. The Pats will want too much for a WR who is 31 and will require a long term deal at $9 million a year to make the trade happen. Never going to happen.

Also, the Pats are deeper at WR than they were last year.

A couple of notes by Bedard, from his column giving his take on the cuts (there's more at the link):

That Dan Koppen was not released should be taken as a sign that he will be on the 53-man roster. If he wasn't going to be, Belichick would/should have released Koppen out of respect so he had the best chance of finding another job.

Don't know how anybody can be shocked about Gaffney's release considering we know nothing about the medical reports. Maybe he's going to be out a month. Maybe the Patriots didn't want to carry him and risk having to waive a guy like Danny Woodhead. Gaffney could be back at some point, you never know. He really wanted to come here after being released by the Redskins. He has already pocketed a $250,000 signing bonus. Maybe he'll be back when he's healthy or when his salary isn't guaranteed after Week 1.

Bedard is wrong that it shouldn't have been a shock, but he is right that Gaffney could have an injury that will sideline him until late September or October and he could be back. I don't think even Bedard talked about the possibility of Gaffney getting cut until it actually happened.

I think there's a decent chance that Warren is brought back sometime after week one when they don't have to guarantee his salary, which is what they did last year IIRC.

I would bet he's back at some point this season, maybe even earlier than some expect.

But more youthful...

But far less talented. Ebert is simply not ready for a spot on the 53-man roster of a defending conference champion, and is redundant to boot. His meager skills are not needed on a WR corps that includes Welker, Branch & Edelman.

And Kerry feckin Taylor? WTF was Bill thinking bring back that never-was? Idiotic.

I'm guessing the simple answer is "he was injured." Contractually, you can't just jettison a guy who was injured playing football for you.

The consensus seems to be that Taylor is a one-week signing, with the goal of fielding a full team of inessential players for the final preseason game.

wonder if Vegas has an over/under for the number of games before we resign Ventrone . . . :rocker:

I will be praying to my Lord & Master Satan that this is true.

The over under is for the number of times he will be signed and released this year...:singing:

We don't know what the future holds for Wes Welker. If Welker leaves after 2012, Ebert would be a better bet than Edelman. Ebert played slot receiver
in college while Edelman was a quarterback. Edelman had only 7 receptions
last year and has not stood out this preseason.

And Edelman's contract expires this year, right? Four years will be up after this season.

Not that he should be so difficult to re-sign.

Saw every game Kerry Taylor played in college. Thought he was destined for big things after high school recruiting hype and a promising start to his freshman year but he never really panned out as hoped.

Positives::

Good route runner - Easily the strongest point of his game. Really crisp moves in the 5-15 yard range.

Sticky hands - Pretty reliable to make the catch if the ball gets to him.

Decent size - Not a huge guy, but big enough to play out wide or in the slot

Negaives::

Attitude - Kerry is arrogant to a fault and a combination of his bad attitude and immaturity led him to do things like flame the coaching staff to the media, pout and fuss when he wasn't getting his catches and show a consistently blase demeanor at practice.

Speed - Taylor is shockingly slow.

Gotta say I'm surprised he's in the NFL. Between Josh Barrett and Taylor, it looks like BB is trying to find the Sun Devil that underachieved the most. Don't be surprised if he goes after Vontaze Burfict next ;)

If his injury is not too serious (in that he is able to contribute later in the year), he could be part of the "shadow" roster and be back down the stretch.

There is no way Gaffney would make it to the shadow roster if his health is better than serious. At the very least, I would have to think that the Jets would be extremely interested in signing him, given their disaster at the WR position.

Lloyd
Welker
Branch
Edelman
Slater
Ebert ?

not thin per se but considering 3 of them are slot guys we are basically in the same positon as last year if Lloyd gets injured or doesn't work out.

Seems like BB is back to coveting the smaller ubber quick twitch type WR's that run precise routes.

I guess his thinking is with Lloyd taking the top off the defense and Gronkowski putting the fear of death in DB's hearts as he runs the deep seam routes, there should be tons of open space or mismatches underneath for Hernandez and the midgets to operate.
