Per rotoworld.

Patriots released WR Donte' Stallworth.
Stallworth's straight-line speed isn't enough. Now 31, he nearing the end of his career after bouncing between three different teams in the last three seasons. The Patriots are going to roll with Deion Branch and Jabar Gaffney as the primary backups to Brandon Lloyd and Wes Welker. Julian Edelman and Matt Slater also project to make the final roster as special teams assets.

Branch showed a bit more than Stallworth in the preseason games, so not a surprise.

Was always going to happen.

Best of luck Donte.

Welcome to the Dolphins, Donte!

Sadly, this was pretty much the way it looked to be.

Best of luck, Donte. Keep at it and thanks for the effort.

Not much of a surprise since he was mediocre playing with the 2s and 3s. Also, his best shot to make the club was by contributing on special teams and Demps has made him expendable there.

Good luck.

Looks like "the vet gets a chance to hook on somewhere else", cut so he must have comported himself well.

Guess it was a showcase between him and Branch. You realistically can only throw to so many guys and we have lots of different weapons, special teams considerations, etc.

Sorry to see this happen. I'd rather have him that Gaffney, but Brady likes Gaffney so there's that, I guess. :D

Best of luck, Donte!

Too bad. I can't say I disagree in terms of a purely football decision.

On a locker room and personal level, I admire him. There but for the Grace of God go any of us when it comes to the automobile accident in which a young father was killed. How Donte' Stallworth responded at the scene of the accident, how he took responsibility, did his time, settled with the family to provide for the guy's daughter and how he's taken the message to all the young guys in the league is the definition of maturity and responsibility.

The Sunday Globe story from 8-19-2012 detailing the accident in Florida and his taking full responsibility was well deserved and if you haven't seen it, please do.

Good luck Donte'. Maybe we'll see you again in a Patriots uniform down the road, maybe not. There's a deep well of affection and admiration around these parts.

Why would you rather have him than Gaffney? Yes, Gaffney has been injured this preseason, but he ended up beating out Stallworth to be the #3 WR by the end of 2007. Stallworth has been on the decline the last few years and Gaffney had his best season ever last year. Gaffney seems like the better decision all the way.

Not me... I'd rather have the guy with better hands than the guy with better feet. Call the me anti-Rex Ryan. ;)

This isn't surprising....not if you'd been to any practices.

I like the man, but I'm not sorry to see the "player" go. It was nice of him to do it so early to see if he can still grab on to another team.

God, I'm really hoping that we can find some very big, very raw, very fast, WR for the PS this season. Oh yeah.....that's Ebert.

Ya, it's too bad we couldn't find a spot for him.

I suppose this ends the Branch/Stallworth debate. After all, there is no chance now that Branch gets cut from the team, right?

The Pats have already parted ways with some major talent at the position (Stallworth, Ocho, Gonzalez). Of course, all are past their prime but all have proven to have the capability to be big contributors.

The Demps signing probably spelled the end to Stallworth who could of contributed more to ST then Branch or Gaffney. Financially he was the cheapest of the 3, but he must not have played well enough to make up for that extra half million.

He'll definitely be picked up by another team this season and it wouldn't surprise me if it was in the division just so he can face the Pats 2 times this year.

Not surprised. And as expected, Edleperson is NOT going anywhere.

I called him camp fodder months ago.

I think he was insurance in case injuries at WR became a problem

Donte clearly showed last year he is done...much like Ochocrapo.

Branch will remain on the team, that is good news.

The Jets have no receivers after Holmes......Donte will be a Jet

Patriots Release Donte Stallworth, Cut Others
By: Ian Logue

It's been a busy morning so far and it appears the Patriots aren't waiting until the deadline to start making some moves as they look to get down to the league mandated 75 man roster limit...

That debate was over before it even began.

Best of luck to Stallworth. I wish him a ton of luck wherever he goes, so long as it isn't against the Patriots.

Re: Patriots Release Donte Stallworth, Cut Others

so semantically - why is Donte a release and the others who were released early are 'cuts'?
just wondering.

The other players quite literally each received a gash in their skin from a knife or other, sharp instrument.

As long as Deion Branch is not a Starter that's fine with me.
