I thought those people who like to guess about the roster would like a thread for guessing the first round of cuts. Have at it....

Finding the first ten cuts to 75 isn't hard, at all. It's finding the next 22 that will be more difficult...

With as many injuries that happen now days, why don't they increase the roster to something like 60? Or even the practice squad number. BTW, how many can be on the practice squad?

No idea what you're talking about, NAF.

If there ends up being a surprise in the first group of cuts, I could see it being Stallworth.

8 players on the practice squad.

As for increasing the roster size i would imagine some of it is economics (that much more of an expense for owners mean that much less profit for them).

There may be a couple of side effects, where better teams would be able to keep more players; this would make it more difficult for other teams to improve. that goes against the NFL's parity agenda. While it is exciting to see good teams at the top, it also results in lower interest and attendance for those teams on the bottom.

Bill Belichick has also commented in the past about how bigger rosters equals more specialization. That means less versatility - something the Pats have been able to exploit to their benefit over the years.

It's one of those topics for which I can easily see both the positives and negatives.

Prime Suspects:

Rivera, and Koutouvides

Tarpinian survives this round to get whacked in the final cut

I think Belichick cuts a WR early to give that player a fighting chance to get signed by another team quickly.....that player is Stallworth.

Bolden is likely to be the first RB cut.

There is no way David Patten makes this team.

My 10 to be cut:

Marcus Harrison
Donte Stallworth
Malcolm Williams
Sergio Brown
Jeremiah Warren
Dustin Waldron
Eric Kettani
Derrick Dennis
Derrick Martin
Aaron Lavarias

Not sure when it is, but the date is coming up when they can put Ballard on the IR without him having to clear waivers. Also, when the NFI list won't count as a roster spot.. So, that is two more roster spots that will be freed up.

Do you count FB's as RB's? I can see the FB's all getting cut or going to PUP before Bolden gets cut.

If they cut Bolden who handles RB duties in blow outs? Don't want to eat up Ridley for no good reason. Vereen is delicate, Demps is very small, do is Woodhead. The FB's are all cut IMO, so...

DaBruinz has Kettani getting cut this round. I don't think that will happen. If I'm right, that will leave a FB on the roster.

Both FBs have practiced so neither can be put on the PUP.

As for who would take running plays in blowouts? Woodhead or Demps. Just because they are small doesn't make them fragile.

That being said, I could see the Pats carrying all 5.. but I could see them go with 4 also. And still no FBs, though Larsen is excellent on special teams and could sub as a LB..

Interesting that Rodak breaks it down into 2 categories:

--on the edge (bubble player)

--on the outside

He has Schiancoe, Pryor, Waters, Bequette, and Dennard all as being on the 'outside,' not even on the edge, basically saying that he leans towards them not making the team.

I would agree with Schiancoe, and maybe even Pryor--depending upon whether or not it is still recovery from the same injury or it is a new injury.

I think Dennard is a good possibility to be a developmental PS player, if he clears waivers of course.

I really don't see Bequette clearing waivers if he doesn't make the team, but maybe that's just me.

Waters is still obviously a big wildcard until we know more, although if one had to wager many feel he will be here still.

Bequette is not going to be cut. He has had a good camp and played well in his time during preseason. He has more upside then Scott or Francis. I would actually project him to be the starting LE on 2-3 years down the road if not sooner.

I would agree with you.

Interestingly enough, Rodak has Francis and Scott as being on the bubble, with Bequette being even further away than that, 'on the outside.'

I think in some instances you need to take future needs into the matter too, even though you are always trying to build the best 53 man roster for this year specifically, and I think one would have to assume that Bequette may be a future part of this team.

I don't agree with Rodak on Bequette. When was the last time Bill cut a third round draft selection the same year he drafted him?

Oh, that's right, Never.

And I also think Dennard makes it, insurance if they don't get a deal done with Arrington. I mean there is no way Bill is slapping the franchise tag on him at $10+ million next season.
