Mallett vs. Hoyer

Who should be the #2?

Is Hoyer worth $2M? Can you get anything for him in a trade? Would you rather see Mallett in there if something tragic happened with hopes of learning for the future of this team?

Let's hear your thoughts.

I am of the belief that Hoyer is not that much better than Mallett and certainly isn't worth $2M to be the backup, but that is just me.

Their numbers are virtually identical through the first two preseason games, so its hard to decide which guy deserves to be put in front of the other on the depth chart. However, it just seems this preseason that Mallett has looked much better as an overall QB and is much improved from last year. If he can continue to learn from Brady and improve then he may one day take over as starter.

As for Hoyer, its time to trade him. He has been a serviceable backup but there is no reason to keep 3 QBs on a roster with other holes. If we can get something for him from a team that is in desperate need of a QB then its much better then spending money to keep a guy that I don't think will ever become a future starter for this team.

Mallett has more upside and is under contract for a few extra years. Hoyer is a FA after this season. If they are even Mallett is the #2.

Was the QB for 2 drives and the team scored 2 TD, as BB says he made the most of his opportunities.

I like Brian Hoyer. He has a starting QBs mind and knowledge, IMHO. He does not have a starting QBs arm though. So what ? There are lots of QBs who didn't. They played and played well.

Some of whom were Brian Sipe, Joe Kapp, Joe Hofstader, the George Allen QB not named Sonny Jurgenson, etc.

But...

Ryan Mallett is finding himself. In only his second extended action since he was drafted and after his first TC, and a redshirt season, he revealed a lot to me.

He has the rocket, big arm, reminescent of Drew Bledsoe, but we all knew that.

He has escapability, now that he has lost some weight and gotten stronger, unlike Drew Bledsoe. He worked out this offseason and it shows he did, and is working to be better,which was something questioned about Drew who seemed content tot coast on his God given talents. He can scramble some, and get outside, while always looking downfield to throw the ball.

He can shuffle within the pocket, something Bledsoe could do. But Mallett does it better, and obviously has been watching Brady, who does it superbly.

He can take something off the screens and dumpoff passes, something Brady does, but Bledsoe had trouble with doing.

He is now displaying QB POISE, the most important attribute of a QB. That insight indicates he is not the Jar head jock, that can't think, some had cast him to be.

Mallett is gaining some confidence now. He started to relax, and just play football, and the game was NOT too fast for him.

His play in the 4th Quarter of the Tampa Bay game was a revelation. We are seeing a Star being born.:snob:

I've now seen enough from Mallett to thnk he's at least a serviceable backup to Brady. If Mallett can shine in week four I'd heavily consider trading or releasing Hoyer in order to free up an extra spot where it's needed. I don't think Hoyer has much trade value but you could get something small for him for sure. Send him somewhere with a west coast offence which suits his arm and brain.

As someone said, if you're down to you 3rd QB you're pretty much screwed. Go depends he roster spot and cash somewhere else if Mallett shows us enough. He's going to be better than Hoyer as a backup and you can see it.

I thought Mallett was very good last night.

Would not be surprised to see him move ahead of Hoyer now.

Giants game will decide the depth chart at QB. And given the Beating Tommy took last night, certainly makes it a more relevent camp competition.

I was also pleased by Mallet's performance and while I'm not on board with getting rid of Hoyer now, I think an argument could be made for that.

But, a couple of things about Mallet last night.

First, he had a lot better protection than Brady did, partly because of adjustments, party because the Buc's 1s were tired and partly because sometimes the Buc's 2s were on the field. Still, Mallet moved pretty well in the pocket, which was encouraging.

Second, although he has a cannon arm, the couple of touch passes he tried to throw were way off target. I'd like a guy successful at throwing both bullets and pillows. I'd like to see Mallet throw a couple of the latter.

I wonder whether, in the next game, Mallet or Hoyer will get the most time. If it's Mallet, Hoyer might as well pack his suitcase.

I could see our future QB corps in Mallett as the starter, and Hoyer as the backup.

But Hoyer wil probably leave next offseason, and the Pats will get a 3rd or more likely a 4th round Draft Pick as compensation.

Not to sound like a smart arse. But what body of evidence is there to suggest we'll get a 3rd or 4th comp pick?

With OL playing the way it is, we better keep both backups. Brady can't keep taking those shots without eventually getting sidelined.
BTW, long term I think Mallett is the guy.

I think long term, its definitely mallet..

Hoyer is a good stop-gap guy...has good poise, rarely makes a bad decision...hes a game manager. however, his arm strength/skillset is limited and he isnt going to make the difficult play.

thats what mallet can do, watching him he has all the skills/tools to be a QB in this league and make the tough pass...the question is if he can improve his decision making/poise in the pocket...and I think last night he made the right decisions.

Hoyer might not throw that interception to the sidelines, but he also cant make that TD throw to silvestro against the eagles.

Long term, Mallet is your guy..

Actually it doesn't. 3rd and 4th round comp picks are awarded to teams who had a star leave and didn't replace him with a similar player and the star signed a top tier deal and played at top tier production levels. The most Hoyer will see if someone decides to take a shot at him as a starter is $5-7M per on a 3-4 year deal. Signing him to compete for a starting position he might net $2-3M per for 3 years. Unless he gets some playing time in season that boosts his perception, he will probably settle for $1-2M per for 2-3 years as a solid #2 with starter potential at least as a bridge player on a team without a franchise QB (which is what he wants so he has a shot).
