Hopefully a contract like his brother has will give some incentive for Devin to work hard to play up to the level he had in his rookie season.

I think that Jason got some crazy money for a corner but I do hope McCourty is eventually the better player in the coming years...then I could see THIS team paying him his worth.

The Patriots NEVER sink a boatload of cash and sacrifice cap dollars into a corner to keep them...Ty Law,Asante Samuel to name two are players who thought they were worth more than the team did and I would be surprised to see McCourty ever rise to the level of Law or be given ridiculous money like Jason received.

Actually, i find this really odd. The sports radio down here during the offseason kept talking about how the Titans needed to improve their secondary. They were questioning whether the Titans would even start Jason. They were making comments about how he needed to step up like his Patriot Brother......

On face value I thought it was a gross overpay but hey, it's not my money. If it solidifies a position for the foreseeable future and McCourty (Tenn) continues to improve then perhaps it's a smart move and ultimately proves a prudent one.

It did seem odd that they were so willing to overpay like that though, at least to me.

I would think that the market would dictate a guy like Jason McCourty around 6 1/2 to 7 million per, and that's at the most, considering what he's done so far.

I think with the some of the rising costs and overspending for CB's around the league it's pretty safe to think that Kyle Arrington will be playing his last season here.

Jason was better than Devin last year. It is surprising that he got such a deal though.

That's about what it is. He was signed thru this season for $1.26M, so it's really a 6 year $44M deal and depending on the structure details it could be significantly backloaded. Less than half of the deal is guaranteed, so the first three seasons could be $20M with $24M still due in the last 3, none of which is guaranteed. And depending on how much of that $20M is signing bonus, the dead cap implication could be minimal by year 4-5 (and zilch in year 6).

Finnegan is getting $50M+ over 5 years, $24M in the first two and $33M in the first 3 with $26.5M of that guaranteed.

It is a gross overpay. Jason McCourty is not THAT good. But, like you said, it's not my money or my team's money. So congratulations, Jason.

Somehow I doubt that lack of incentive was the reason for Devin's struggles last year.

I also doubt it took a family member getting a multimillion dollar contract extension to help him realize that he could make some serious money playing football.

It is a gross overpay. Jason McCourty is not THAT good. But, like you said, it's not my money or my team's money. So congratulations, Jason.

The contract average for the top 5 compensated corners this season is $10.6M per Sportrac. The top dogs are averaging $10-12M. The franchise tag this year which is the average of the top 5 over the last 5 is $10.4M. Under the old formula it would have been $14M. This deal averages just over $7M. Back in 2006-07 when the cap was $14M less than it is this season the Pats were willing to pay Asante $6.5M on average in a long term extension. They paid him $7.2M instead on a one year tag. The Eagles then paid him $9M per average on a long term deal in 2008.

The Titans also aren't paying McCourty for what he's done in his first two seasons in the league. They are paying him based on what they project him to do in the next 5-6. By the time this deal is at it's midpoint the cap will be commencing it's inevitable rise based on the TV deals kicking in. I'd guess conservatively the cap in 2015 will be close to $130M and by the last year of his deal (2017) topping $140M. If he's just a very good veteran corner at that time they will have made themselves a good deal. If he's better they'll have landed a bargain since elite corners are currently making 8-10% of cap and if he's worse he'll be long gone having been paid roughly 6% of cap for 3 years or so.

If he has another good season someone is going to be paying Arrington similar money. That's what the market is. The demand for functional corners is at an all time high due to the rise in playing time and significance of slot corners.

Its an insane contract on its face. I understand the thought process from Tennessee looking at it as a 6 year deal but even then its a crazy deal. Hes not a good a player. Hes shown less than Ladarius Webb and that was a pretty nutty deal. This just makes no sense. While maybe the structure will come out as a total backloaded deal as it stands now every GM in the NFL must be cursing out the Titans because they just set a new market for below average players that have some potential. This deal should rank 15th in the league at the position. I cant see how anyone views him as the 15th best corner in the league. Its not as much of a head scratcher as everything the Panthers front office does, but its close.
