ESPN's John Clayton tracked Manning's progress through the summer and saw the quarterback struggle with passes to his right beyond 10 yards. This was evident in offseason practices, according to Clayton, who has seen improvement, but not perfection, through two preseason games.

Manning looks comfortable throwing to his left, but Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. told ESPN.com that defenses might scheme to seal up that side of the field, forcing Peyton into uncomfortable situations. Nobody's sounding the alarm just yet: "If anyone can do what is needed to get away with throwing with field limitations, it is No. 18," Williamson said.

I'm not sure where anybody is seeing improvement through two preseason games. Manning hasn't looked good... at all. Not that I'm shocked, I actually expected it. The guy suffered a season ending neck injury and hasn't played ball since 2010 (a year in which he appeared to be on the decline anyway).

Though I will say Manning will probably be OK. But to think he was going to walk on the field and be himself again - that's silliness. Clayton can overanaylze this thing all he wants. Bottom line is, it took Brady some time to get back from an ACL injury. Peyton was even longer removed from the game and not as much in his prime as Brady was when his injury occurred. People need to cool their expectations of Manning.

He does look pretty terrible out there. Poor throwing, accuracy is down and throw power is atrocious. I don't think he will play for more than 2 years before retiring.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say he looks terrible. Terrible is Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, Jamarcus Russell, etc. But he looks bad. He looks old, hurt, and past his prime. His decision making skills thus far haven't been as sharp as they previously were and his throws are lacking much of the zip that we've become accustomed to seeing from Manning.

With that said, though, as a critical thinker, I have to apply the same critical thinking skills that I've been using toward Solder in talking about him toward Manning. I wouldn't over-analyze two preseason games when it comes to Manning. He's been hurt and out of it for a year. There's plenty of room to improve, but I'm guessing that if anybody can turn it around, it would be Manning.

I thought during the first game that his throws had no zip. The INT that was tipped, for example, that's a ball he generally rifles in there for the score. I didn't see any of the highlights from the second game but seems like Clayton is seeing the same thing.

Maybe it's the homer in me but I always thought Manning was overrated. In fact, I don't think it's the homer in me. I think Manning has always been overrated. That isn't to say he isn't a good quarterback, but he's always played in a stat-padding dome, he's always had a lot of weapons around him, and yet he always sucks in bad weather and he's always (most always anyway) sucked in the post season which is where really great players have always defined themselves.

For some reason Manning has always been the golden child for the NFL and for sports journalism. I'm not sure why or when they all collectively decided to portray him as the greatest ever but I always just viewed him as the choke-artist with the most entertaining pouty-face in football.

I don't expect anything too magnificence out of him in Denver.

Agreed - I expect that he'll look bad for a couple of games, then shake off a lot of the rust and round into something closer to his old form by the middle portion of the season. He'll probably never get 100% back to where he was, but I'll be surprised if he doesn't at least get back to being a top 8-10 QB.

It's absolutely the homer in you. If. You want to teach anyone who has problems with mechanics, you say go watch Petton Manning. He was always your prototypical QB. If you put Tom Brady's fire, passion and leadership skills into Mannings head, you'd have perfection.

Not saying Brady's mechanics aren't fantastic, they are, but Manning has the best mechanics of his era and arguably there hasn't been another QB like him in terms of that.

He may have had problems in the clutch before, he might have thrown a player under the bus once or twice, but if you want to look at someone and say over their career 'he was mechanically the best QB there was at this time and, arguably, the best who has ever lived', you point at Manning.

I love taking digs at him, and yes he was on the decline, but I respect a once in a lifetime kind of player and he was that. I feel pretty glad to have witnessed an era like this, where i have got to watch two of the best QBs to grace the game...I envy those who got to see the Marino/Montana era to go with this one.

It's sad to see any player affected by injury like this...the only reason the Pats/Colts rivalry existed or was even close was because of this guy.

Manning will likely not be the Manning of old,but don't count on expecting to see an aged QB with severe diminishing talent either.

I have grown to respect Manning over time and regret it as his career moves into the final stage. I wish him medium well in Denver if they can get his right neck bolt loosened enough for those throws. Oil should do it.

Mindful of performance, he {TFB} maintains that ultimately he might not hold the decision of when to hang up his cleats.

Edgerrin James wasn't reliable?? The guy is the Colts all-time leading rusher. Other than the one season he got hurt, I'm pretty sure he was pretty dependable in the backfield.
