Warren Sapp Reveals Belichick Was Very Interested in Drafting Him in Cleveland
By: Ian Logue

An interesting entry in the BigLead this morning about Bill Belichick's interest in Warren Sapp back in 1995....

I'm sure Belichick would have taken Sapp if everything went right, but I'm absolutely sure that conversation didn't happen.

Well we already know that Sapp has a tendency to "make things up". Just ask Shocky.

If Belichick or Lombardi or someone else who was in the Browns' organization at the time confirms it, then I will believe it. Otherwise, I don't believe anything Sapp says.

Florio does a very good job showing the inconsistencies in his media interviews over the last few weeks.

I could have sworn that I have previously read that Belichick wanted to draft Sapp, but was overruled by Lombardi; I am pretty sure that is true.

As for the exact wording in the conversation between Sapp and Belichick, it would not surprise me in the least if that was embellished a bit by Mr. QB Killa'.

Maybe, maybe not... Lombardi admitted he nixed it "we' in the article,
Michael Lombardi: What is Bill Belichick thinking? - SI.com - 2008 NFL Draft

However on draft day, rumors were running rampant about Sapp. Even though Belichick had personally worked out Sapp and loved his talents, we decided to take Sapp off our board because of inaccurate personal background information. So, without a real conviction for a player, we traded out of the spot and watched with great regret as Sapp went on to a standout career. The mistake we made was trusting outside sources. From that day on, trusting outside sources would never happen again in a Belichick draft room.

If he'd take the erection out of the quote, he'd be a whole lot more believable.

pfft, Sapp just wants people to buy his book.

With Warren Sapp still on the board, the Cleveland Browns traded down in that draft to take JJ Stokes.

Sapp is a moron.

Maybe Sapp was talking to Jon Gruden. The erection comment sounds just like something that twisted shut-in might say.

I don't know goheels. It would be remiss of me to say I wasn't tickled in an erogenous zone when the Patriots traded up for Chandler Jones and Dont'a Hightower.

You will be when Hightower and Jones converge on Mark Sanchez in the first game against the Jesters.

Warren Sapp was draft in 1995 which is 17 years ago.. Chandler Jones was 5 years old to put the relevance of this in perspective.. I only care who BB is very interested in drafting in 2013...

Even if Belichick did say it...who the hell cares? It's just hyperbole either way.

JJ Stokes was drafted by the 49ers

Right you are, but... the Falcons held the #10 pick in the '95 draft. The Browns traded Eric Metcalf, and their first round pick (#26-Devin Bush) to the Falcons for their 1st round pick (#10-J.J. Stokes) on 1995-03-25. The the 49ers traded their first round pick (#30-Craig Powell), their third round pick (#94-Mike Frederick), fourth round pick (#119-Dave Barr), and '96 first round pick (#26 overall) to Browns for the tenth pick which turned out to be JJ Stokes.

Basically, Belichick traded JJ Stokes for Craig Powell, Mike Frederick, Dave Barr and the 49ers '96 first rounder. It gets better.

Belichick was fired by the Browns and went back to work with Parcells in New England leaving the Browns with the 26th pick in the 1st round of the 1996 draft which happened to be linebacker Ray Lewis. The Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens.

In 1996 Bill Belichick landed on his feet as defensive coordinator of the New England Patriots who went to Super Bowl 31 and lost to Brett Favre and Reggie White and the Green Bay Packers.

Doesn't read much like Bill Belichick had a thing for Warren Sapp in all of that. Like I said, Sapp is a moron.
