His speed alone has all extremely excited. But somehow reading quotes from Fears gushing about his speed gets me even more excited. Fastest guy he has coached in 37 years not really a surprise but still fun to read.

Loved this quote from I Fears:

Wearing jersey No. 42, he competed in 1-on-1 blitz pickup drills against Buccaneers players. His effort was described as “courageous” by running backs coach Ivan Fears.

:D sounds like he got his *ss kicked a few times. :singing:

Gotta admit I find this exciting:

Fears said that Demps is the fastest player he’s coached in his 37 years in the game (22 in the NFL).

I am really looking forward to seeing a KO return from this guy.

Demps report was short on details. I hope future updates on Demps dwarf this short summary. The tiny details are important to us fans who feel shortchanged on information from closed camp.

This is Tony Gaiter part deux;

You are right. I'm giving this sad excuse for a post a low star rating.

Excellent points. It's the little things that matter.

I noticed the report said that Demps was 5 pounds lighter than his playing wieght at Florida. That got my notice, especially because he is so small to start with. I'm not sure Demps can last 16 games even with the 5 extra pounds.

He is going to physically wear down a lot quicker than the other rookies, but hopefully catch a second wind in time for a deep playoff run.

Matt Bowen on National Football Post recently responded to a question about maintaining strength and weight during the season. He said players typically can only lift 3 times per week and at that it is heavily supervised because of the beating their body takes. He said that bodies need time to recover and that most players lose some weight during the season.

The Olympics quest for pure speed screwed him here. Now it's too late to "pump himself up" for the season. He's not an every down player and not even THE 3rd down back. Surviving kickoffs is a legit concern but there are less of them with the new rules and maybe our improved defense will only give him one kickoff per game. :)

Yeah Patriots.com is showing him at a lower weight from his playing day at Fl. Understandable when he is training for the Olympics where speed with lower weight is at a premium, looking at his weight/Height it is similar to Darren Sproles.

My guess is that he won't get enough touches this year for his durability to be an issue.

I'm not sure this will make a difference in his wearing down. In fact I would think a 350 lb lineman would be more likely to wear down as a rookie, going from the shorter college schedule to the gruelling NFL schedule carrying around all that extra weight.

I'm pretty sure that the violent collisions with these 350 lbs linemen will help expedite this wearing down thing.

Would the Pats really want him to? Maybe he gets to 190 lbs but would he be effective at what the Pats need him to do at a higher weight? Don't know.

He's not an every down player and not even THE 3rd down back.

But this was never a realistic expectation this year regardless of his playing weight.

Surviving kickoffs is a legit concern

Jacoby Ford is 190 lbs and had 35 touches in addition to 53 returns in 2010.
Randall Cobb is 190 with 37 touches in addition to 34 returns.
Goodman and Sproles are reported to be 190 as well. There are others like David Reed (190 lbs) and Ladarius Webb (180) that split returns.

I agree with your statement that injuries while returning kicks is a concern. I just don't think it is any more of a concern for the Pats than it is for Oakland, GB, NO, SD and Baltimore. A sub-200 lb returner is much closer to the rule than the exception...particularly for the top guys.

If Demps can return 25+ kickoffs for a good average and a couple of big plays, and add in 1-2 gadget plays a game, that might be all the Pats need. It would certainly be worth a spot on the gameday active roster. I would be disappointed if he is unable to stay healthy (or hold onto the ball consistently) with that workload.

Wes Welker per NFL.com: 5'9, 185
Jeff Demps per Olympic site: 5'9, 180

Demps said today he is 183, his playing weight at Fl was 188, At 5.7" he isn't a fragile build.

Maybe the idea is to have Welker, Edelman, Vereen, Woodhead, and Demps out at the same time.

How about a crazy three back set?

Blue Smurf right............

File this under this guy is crazy and just making things up but I dont see why being smaller automatically equates to injury.

Clearly he is going to lose a lot of individual battles if strength becomes the determining factor but he should be able to use his quickness to help get his body in a good position to take hits. Wes does this all the time.

That part wasnt to crazy but now here we go. Might losing the battle of strength help him avoid some injuries. A guy that comes to mind is Ted Johnson and the 2 years he lost to bicep tears, here is one of the biggest strongest LBs I have seen and he tears muscles off the bone trying to make a tackle. Had this been a smaller guy he likely just gets bulled right over but Ted Johnson was so strong he held on just his tendons didnt.

This is sort of the Drunk Driver anology not sure if you guys have ever heard this or if there is any truth to it but I have heard in drunk driving accidents the sober people tend to get hurt worse then the drunk ones and the supposed reason for this being that the drunk guy is lose and may not even know the colision is coming while the sober guys sees it and tenses up.

Another anology might be with a brick wall compared to dry wall or something. if you ran right into the brickwall I would imagine there is muck more force involved in the contact then running into drywall as the drywall will give. This might not be a great anolgy because clearly the drywall would be damaged but if you used that Ivan Drago punch power testing machine I bet there would be significantly more force recorded.

OK flame on. I am bored at work and the only thing I can do other than post this BS is actual work so dont mind me.
